ELLSWORTH—A Mount Desert Island man has been accused of arson and attempted arson after allegedly trying to set two residences on fire on the Stanley Mountain Road in Mount Desert on Monday afternoon.
Glenn Stanley, 58, was arrested on April 22 for allegedly trying to commit arson on two residences owned by the same person. One of those residences sustained massive damage.
Stanley appeared in Ellsworth District Court Wednesday afternoon, April 24, for his bail hearing. He had been held in Hancock County Jail prior to the hearing.
During Wednesday’s hearing, Stanley said that he is indigent and would like a court appointed attorney. The judge assigned Max Coolidge as Stanley’s attorney.
Stanley has been charged with:
Arson Class A, if convicted he faces fines of up to $50,000 and 30 years of incarceration;
Attempted Arson, Class B, if convicted he faces fines of up to $20,000 and 10 years of incarceration;
Aggravated Criminal Mischief, Class C, if convicted he faces fines of up to $5,000 and five years of incarceration;
Criminal Mischief, Class D, if convicted he face fines of up to $2,000 and less than one year of incarceration.
Stanley will have a dispositional conference on May 23, at 8:30 a.m.
Saying that he has significant concerns that Stanley poses a threat to the community, the judge set Stanley’s bail at $75,000 cash with no third party and no surety bail. His bail conditions are quite extensive and include not going to the two residences that he allegedly tried to burn, no contact with four individuals, and 24-hour house arrest with very few exceptions if bailed.
According to an attorney present at the hearing, Stanley thought he could probably come up with about $10,000 cash.
Stanley also has a slight criminal history that includes criminal mischief and assault in 1987 and an OUI in 2012.
