Maine State Police Investigates Wrong Way Driver and Related Crash on I-95
On Thursday, January 25, 2024, at approximately 12:21 p.m., the Augusta Regional Communications Center started receiving calls about a white 2019 Chevy Silverado traveling northbound in the southbound lanes on I-95 near mile marker 127. Troopers were responding when they received a report of a tractor-trailer crash that happened at mile marker 131 southbound in Fairfield. The initial investigation indicates that the tractor trailer was traveling southbound in the passing lane when the driver saw the white pickup truck driving towards him in the passing lane the wrong way. The driver of the tractor-trailer was able to avoid the truck.
He slammed on his brakes and swerved to the left which caused the tractor-trailer to roll over in the median. The wrong way driver continued northbound in the southbound lanes until he turned around at mile marker 134 and started traveling southbound in the southbound lanes. The driver then exited the Interstate at mile marker 133 where a Clinton police officer spotted the pickup truck and was able to conduct a traffic stop without incident on Route 201 near the restaurant the Purple Cow.
The driver, 71-year-old Randolph Gerry, of Winslow, was charged with driving to endanger and operating the wrong way on a divided highway. He was issued a summons to appear in court at a later date. Officers say Gerry did not show any indications of impairment and there are no known medical conditions at this time. The incident remains under investigation.
The tractor-trailer which was hauling potatoes was registered to River View Transport out of Houlton. The crash at mile marker 131 closed the passing lane.
