Hamilton Station Project Moves Forward
BAR HARBOR—According to the MDI YWCA,
”MDI has long been known for a housing crunch: a lack of attainable housing for people who work on the island but can’t find or can’t afford a place to live here. As part of our mission to empower women and strengthen families and communities, last year, the YWCA bought 27 acres on Route 3 in Bar Harbor with the goal of creating attainable year-round rental housing.
”The Hamilton Station Steering Committee has met weekly to make progress on that goal. MDI’s housing crunch has been called a problem of ‘the missing middle,’ people who work on island year-round, but for whom housing has been out of reach. Initial evaluations suggest that the parcel can accommodate up to 50 housing units. The YWCA’s vision is to create a neighborhood of attainably priced rental housing with a sense of place and community at Hamilton Station.
”The steering committee has engaged a civil engineer, landscape architect, and architectural firm and consulted with experts on funding sources, responsible energy practices, and structural assessment. The property has been surveyed, and the viability of existing structures—two barns, a farmhouse, and a caretaker’s cottage – has been evaluated.”
Design Review Board Sets Calendar
Before heading into a workshop Thursday afternoon, the Bar Harbor Design Review Board set its schedule and notifications for 2024. The 10-minute-long meeting also saw the the board members approving January 11 minutes. There was no public attending the meeting.
