BAR HARBOR—Every year many of the property owners on Ledgelawn Avenue host almost 1,000 trick or treaters from all over Hancock County and Bar Harbor, and every year locals have a chance to help support those efforts in a candy drive via a donation box at Hannaford’s in Bar Harbor. For about fifteen years the popular avenue has been closed at both ends and the intersections to promote safety for the trick-or-treaters.
According to Bar Harbor Police Sergeant Soren Sundberg, officers will block the roadway to vehicular traffic between 3:30 and 8:30, Monday, October 31.
Marie Yarborough, a Ledgelawn resident, has organized the candy drive since 2016. She distributes the candy to each resident that has requested some. Everyone gets an equal share to help them meet the demands of those 1,000 or so trick-or-treaters. In the past, homeowners paid around $100 for candy without the help or donations.
Yarborough posted this week,
“It's that time of year again!
The residents of Ledgelawn love to host a spooky Halloween night of trick or treating, but they could not do it without the generosity of people just like you!
Thank you to Hannaford Supermarkets and Evelyn for allowing this box to sit near their customer service area.
Donations of unopened treats will be accepted until October 26th, and re-distributed to Ledgelawn residents on the 27th.”
This year those Ledgelawn residents might need the help to feed the costumed even more.
PayPal reports that Halloween candy costs will be about 34 percent more expensive this year than last year. According to reports that’s because of supply-chain problems and inflation. About $3.1 billion is spent nationwide on candy for Halloween.
YahooLife reports:
So, while consumers aren’t getting quite as much candy as they are used to. Yahoo suggests that the cheapest candy is possibly Mars because they’ve had the lowest price increase. So expect to see a lot of Skittles and Twix if you’re heading out to the streets. Similarly, currently the cheapest big box store or pharmacy to purchase candy is Target and Walmart.
However, consumers might want to make slightly different choices if the Candy Store’s data is correct. The site says that Maine’s top Halloween candy is Sour Patch Kids, Starburst and candy corn.
