BAR HARBOR—On Tuesday, May 4, around 9:30 a.m., Bar Harbor police officers were dispatched to Melt sandwich shop at 27 Main Street, Bar Harbor, for a report of a vehicle that had driven into the building.
A young adult had been attempting to back out of her parking space, which faced the Melt building, and accidentally went forward instead, pushing in a portion of the wall. There was a concrete parking stop and a curb in front of the car, between the car and the building.
There were no injuries reported and the vehicle suffered moderate damage but appeared to still be drivable.
MOUNT DESERT—On May 27, Officer Kline documented a fraud complaint for a Mount Desert resident. The resident was convinced by the scammer that the scammer had deposited money in the victim’s account and was able to convince the victim to withdraw the nonexistent money and give it “back” to them. The victim lost approximately lost $19,000.

An officer assisted with traffic control on Route 3 for a Memorial Day event in Bar Harbor.
Lt. Kevin Edgecomb and Officer Zack Kline assisted with the Memorial Day parade in Northeast Harbor.
Lt. Edgecomb provided a Mount Desert resident a ride home after the resident had locked his keys in his vehicle.
Officer Ted Cake responded to a suspicious activity complaint in Bar Harbor but could not locate the source of the suspicious activity.
Someone called the Bar Harbor Police Department to report information.
Sgt. Jerrod Hardy responded to a report of gun shots and/or fireworks in Bar Harbor but could not locate the source of the noise.
Officer Liam Harrington investigated a report of harassment in Mount Desert and determined that the complaint was made falsely. No further information or disposition was given.

An officer responded to a business on Main Street in Bar Harbor for a report of a window that had been knocked out of its frame but on arrival discovered that the window had just not been secured properly.
Officer Kline investigated a report of a vehicle that had been damaged by a flagpole that had broken off its attachment at a Bar Harbor hotel the night prior during a storm. No further information or disposition was given.
Officers responded to the area of 481 Eden Street in Bar Harbor after receiving a 911 call about a tractor trailer that was blocking the roadway. They could not locate any tractor trailers blocking the roadway.
An officer assisted with traffic control while a forklift was loaded onto a truck on Eden Street in Bar Harbor.
Officer Kline assisted a Bar Harbor resident with paperwork that was required to be signed by an officer.
Officer Kline responded to an erratic driver complaint in Bar Harbor but was unable to locate the suspect vehicle.

Officer Nathan Formby responded to a trespassing complaint at a Bar Harbor business. No further information or disposition was given.
Officer Kline conducted a well-being check on a Bar Harbor resident. The resident refused to speak with Officer Kline and would not answer any of his questions. After Officer Kline left, the subject of the well-being check called the Bar Harbor Police Department and stated that they going to kill themselves. Officer Kline returned to the residence, placed the person under a protective custody arrest, and transported them to MDI Hospital for an evaluation.
Officer T. Cake took an ordinance violation complaint in Bar Harbor regarding business signs on public property. Officer Cake contacted the companies listed on the business signs and advised them of the issue.
Officer Kline documented a report of vehicles disregarding the traffic light at the temporary bridge by the transfer station in Bar Harbor.
A Bar Harbor business reported two men fighting outside of their business. The two men got into a vehicle and left prior to officer arrival. The vehicle was located and contained both men, but they declined to press charges against one another. They were warned not to return to the business.
MHL Tozier spoke with a transient person in Bar Harbor who is struggling with mental health issues.
Officer Kline took a report of ongoing speeding issues in Mount Desert.
Officer Kline responded to a Bar Harbor business for a report of an intoxicated man yelling at people outside. The man had an open container of alcohol and was advised not to drink in public. After throwing the open container away, the man left the area.
An officer responded to a Wayman Lane business in Bar Harbor in reference to a disorderly person. No further information or disposition was given.
Officer Buren arrested Sebastian O. Valentino, 53, no residency given, for alleged drinking in public and alleged violation of conditions of release in Bar Harbor.
The Bar Harbor Police Department took a complaint of a vehicle passing a stopped school bus with its lights flashing. The complaint is under investigation.
Sgt. Chris Dickens responded to a dog in a car complaint at Little Long Pond in Mount Desert. Sgt. Dickens found the dog to not be in distress and located the owner to advise them of the complaint. The owner let the dog out of the car.
Officers responded to the area of Sand Beach to assist Acadia National Park rangers with a reported domestic disturbance but could not locate anyone involved.
Sgt. Hardy mediated a civil issue between two people in Bar Harbor.
Officers assisted “a facility” with an unruly patient in Bar Harbor.

Officer Caleb Mora took a report of a dog bite in Bar Harbor. No further information or disposition was given.
Officer T. Cake took a parking complaint in Mount Desert but found the suspect vehicle to be parked legally.
Officer Mora handled a noise complaint in Bar Harbor but found the complaint to be unsubstantiated.
A neighbor dispute was reported in Bar Harbor. No crime had been committed and both parties were advised to not interact with one another.

Officer J. Cake came upon an injured owl in the roadway in Bar Harbor and transported it to Acadia Wildlife.
Officer T. Cake spoke with someone in Mount Desert, answered some questions for them, and explained to them how to get a protection order.
Officer Mora performed a well-being check in Bar Harbor and found the person to be all set.
MHL Tozier assisted a Bar Harbor community member in crisis.
The Mount Desert Police Department received a complaint of people speeding. Officer T. Cake patrolled the area several times and wrote that he did not observe any major violations.
Officers responded to a domestic disturbance complaint in Hall Quarry. The parties were separated and the incident is being reviewed by the Hancock County District Attorney’s Office for possible criminal charges.
Lt. Edgecomb checked on a woman in Bar Harbor that was in crisis and was able to calm her down.
Officer Burne responded to a report of disorderly conduct in Bar Harbor and removed the suspect from the area.
An officer made a police report in reference to an animal complaint in Mount Desert that was made by a woman from West Hartford, Connecticut.
Following an anonymous tip regarding an underage drinking party in Bar Harbor, Jason Beckwith, 49, of Bar Harbor, was issued a summons for alleged furnishing a place for minors to consume alcohol. Eleven underage adults and four juveniles were warned for illegal consumption of alcohol by minors.

Officer J. Cake looked for a man who was reportedly wearing a pirate shirt and chasing cars in Bar Harbor but was unable to locate the suspect.
Officer Troy Stanwood responded to someone who was having a mental health crisis in Bar Harbor and transported them to the hospital.
Officer Mora handled a disabled vehicle complaint in Bar Harbor and the vehicle was ultimately towed.
After receiving a report of a found cat in Bar Harbor, Officer Kline was able to locate the owner and return the cat.
Officer Kline received a motor vehicle complaint in Bar Harbor, but all officers were busy on other calls.
Officer J. Cake and Sgt. Doug Brundrett participated in the gun take back event which resulted in one weapon (total) being turned in in both Bar Harbor and Mount Desert.
Officer Kline responded to a request from a Bar Harbor resident to help remove a wasp that had entered their residence. The suspect wasp was gone prior to Officer Kline’s arrival.
Officer Kline assisted a person with a disabled motor vehicle in Bar Harbor. The vehicle was resuscitated and driven away from the scene.
Officer Kline responded to a complaint of a speeding motor vehicle in Bar Harbor and located the suspect vehicle in a motel parking lot. The owner as warned for speed after stating that it was their first time taking the vehicle out and they got a little carried away.
Officer Torrey responded to a report of a man in crisis in Mount Desert and transported him to MDI Hospital.
Officer Formby received an unsubstantiated noise complaint against a Bar Harbor business.

Officer Formby arrested Raymar Burnett, 23, of West Palm Beach, Florida, for alleged domestic violence assault in Bar Harbor.
Officers assisted the Bar Harbor Fire Department with vehicle/pedestrian control at the scene of a structure fire on Cottage Street.

Officer Kamorski let a local resident back into their apartment using the police department’s master key, after the caller had locked themselves out of their apartment.

Chief Hall fingerprinted an individual for employment purposes.
A local business made a complaint regarding a vehicle that was parked in such a way as to be blocking their business. Chief Hall responded and found the vehicle to be gone already.
Officer Russell assisted a local resident who was locked out of their apartment.

Forrest Berkley, 70, of Concord, Massachusetts, was at the transfer station in Southwest Harbor and was out of his vehicle, a 2012 Toyota, unloading trash when Christopher Richardson, 48, of Tremont, who was operating a 2020 Chevy, allegedly pulled forward and struck Berkley’s vehicle. There was no reported personal injury. Both vehicles suffered minor damage.
A local elderly resident who has a mental health issue called the Southwest Harbor Police Department again and was told by Chief Hall to call her son and if he felt the need for the police department to assist her, they would.
A local resident reported almost being struck by a white Chevy Suburban type vehicle while walking on the Seal Cove Road. Chief Hall responded but could not locate any vehicle matching that description.

Leonard Weldon, 75, of Southwest Harbor, was driving a 2015 Hyundai west on Seawall Road when a deer entered the roadway. Weldon allegedly struck the deer causing functional damage to the front of the Hyundai. There was no reported personal injury.
Officers Ryan Blakeney and Kamorski responded to Harbor Ridge to assist the Southwest Harbor Fire Department with a brush fire. The fire was extinguished by the fire department.
Officers Blakeney and Kamorski responded to a complaint regarding rocks that had been placed in the roadway on Forest Avenue and appeared to be being used as speed bumps. The officers spoke with Forest Avenue residents and resolved the situation.

Maine State Police Responds to Crash on I-295 in Portland
PORTLAND—On May 28, 2024, at 3:05 p.m., troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash along the northbound median of I-295 near Tukey’s Bridge in Portland. The operator of an SUV told troopers she fell asleep before striking the median concrete barrier. The vehicle came to rest blocking the passing lane. The female operator sustained minor injuries and was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, by Portland Fire and Rescue. The crash slowed northbound traffic for approximately 45 minutes until the operator was transported and the vehicle towed.
Maine State Police Assists Oxford County Sheriff’s Office with a Shooting in Peru and Make Arrest for Murder
PERU—On May 28, 2024, at approximately 7:10 p.m., the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department received several 911 calls reporting a motor vehicle crash in the area of 106-109 Auburn Road in Peru. Callers reported a truck stopped next to a car and fired a gun into the car.
First responders arrived and observed a blue Hyundai on the side of the road with a deceased female in the driver’s seat. The female was later identified as Dale Gaudreau, 59.
The Oxford County Sheriff’s Department requested the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South to assist with the investigation.
Investigator’s learned David Gaudreau, 60, called several family members and advised he shot his wife.
At approximately 11:34 p.m., Gaudreau surrendered himself to the Maine State Police and the Oxford County Sheriff’s department. Gaudreau was transported to the Oxford County Jail and charged with murder.
Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office Investigates Bowdoinham Residential Explosion and Fire
BOWDOINHAM—On May 30, 2024, at approximately 2:00 p.m., investigators from the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to a residential fire at 620 Ridge Road in Bowdoinham. Investigation determined that the fire occurred as a result of an explosion that occurred while the homeowner was attempting to install a gas appliance. The homeowner was injured during the explosion and has been transported to a local hospital for treatment. The fire occurred as a result of the explosion.
The Bowdoinham Fire Department was assisted by fire departments from Richmond, Woolrich, Topsham, Bowdoin, Litchfield, Gardiner and Dresden. The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department and Lisbon Ambulance Service also assisted.
Maine State Police Investigate Thomaston Toddler Death Investigation
THOMASTON—On May 29, 2024, at approximately 7:26 p.m., Thomaston police and rescue responded to the Walmart in Thomaston for a report of a child not breathing. The child was transported to Pen Bay Medical Center, where the child was pronounced dead. Thomaston police contacted the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit who responded to investigate, which is protocol in all child deaths in Maine.
An autopsy will be conducted at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death. The investigation into the death continues.
Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office Investigating Rockport Explosion That Killed One
ROCKPORT—At approximately 2:50 p.m., fire and EMS personnel responded to an explosion at Rockport Steel, located at 17 Rockville Street in Rockport. Investigators from the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office were requested and responded to the scene.
An investigation determined that 39-year-old Sean Rancourt was welding on a diesel fuel tank when it exploded. He received life-threatening injuries as a result of the explosion. He was treated on scene by local EMS providers but did not survive.
Rancourt’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta where an autopsy will be conducted.
Rockport Fire and EMS were assisted by Northeast Ambulance Service, the Rockport Police Department, and the Camden Police Department.
Maine State Police Investigating Fatal Crash on the Turnpike in Kittery
KITTERY—On June 1, 2024, at 03:10 a.m., Chhoeunly Phoeung, 36, of Massachusetts, was driving a Mazda CV5 southbound on the Maine Turnpike when he left the roadway, striking several objects at the entrance to the State Police weigh station in Kittery. After crashing his vehicle, Phoeung walked into traffic on the turnpike and was struck by a tractor-trailer unit.
Phoeung was transported by ambulance to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The State Police continues to investigate.
