BAR HARBOR—Gas cards, gift certificates, a dozen oysters, a day using an Acadia Gem. Those are just some of the offerings in this year’s TIGERaffle!
The deadline for students to turn in their TIGERaffle entry slips and payments has been extended until WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25 so that students still have a few more days to sell those TIGERaffle entries!
Last year, the money raised from the TIGERaffle was able to fund so many supplies, books, and programs for Bar Harbor students, and the Conners Emerson Parent Teacher Student Associate is excited to see what this year will bring!
According to TigerTalk,
“With this creative TIGERaffle 100% of the sales go to the PTSA for teacher grant funding.
“Parent volunteers visited businesses for contributions for the TIGERaffle, created raffle calendars, continue to collect raffle entries, organize the raffle, etc. Due to the dedication and generous effort from parent volunteers, all money collected from raffle tickets will be able to go directly to teacher grants. It's impressive!
“From last year's hugely successful fundraiser, the CES PTSA was able to award $16,665 in Teacher Grants last spring. [Prior to Spring 2023 the PTSA was not able to award more than two to four thousand dollars each year.]
“Our school is undeniably stronger as a result of the efforts of the PTSA and our community. Thank you for your efforts in distributing and collecting TIGERaffle information. The PTSA appreciates your time and energy.”
To participate, you can find a CES student to buy a ticket! Or you can mail in a check to CES at 11 Eagle Lake Rd Bar Harbor, ME, 04609
Those raffle winners will be discovered at the Conners Emerson Night at Side Street Cafe on Thursday November 2, which is part of Side Street’s Family Give Back.
From 5:00-7:30 p.m., come have fun with other Conners Emerson School families and some great food and drink. Kids are welcome!
There will be a live TIGERaffle drawing, and Tiger Gear and last-minute TIGERaffle entries will be for sale.

MDI Hospital receives $12,966 Grant from the Maine Cancer Foundation to Establish a Tobacco Treatment and Prevention Program for Hancock County
MDI Hospital is grateful to announce a one-year $12,966 grant from the Maine Cancer Foundation which aims to help establish a Tobacco Treatment and Prevention Program for the residents of Hancock County. The Maine Cancer Foundation’s grant is offered as part of their ongoing efforts to reduce cancer incidence and mortality in Maine. They have invested over $15 million since 2015 in support of cancer prevention, early detection and screening, and access to care for all Mainers.
With this funding, MDI Hospital health coaches Mary Parham, Sarah O’Neil, and Laura Driscoll will become trained in the American Lung Association’s Freedom from Smoking training program. When their training is complete, the coaches will engage in project planning aimed toward implementing a new, more effective tobacco treatment and prevention program in the region.
Mary Parham, lead health coach on this project says of the grant, “The Integrated Care Team here at Mount Desert Island Hospital—Laura Driscoll, Sarah O’Neil, and myself, are very excited about working with the Maine Cancer Foundation in bringing a new program to MDI Hospital. Our plan is to train with the Freedom from Smoking program and to develop a fresh approach that will not only prove helpful to our current clients and employees of MDIH, but also provide preventative outreach for Hancock County.”
This one-year tobacco treatment and prevention pilot project will include outreach to MDI Hospital’s Integrated Care patient population with specific attention given to those who have disclosed cigarette usage and current MDI Hospital Organization staff members who disclose usage as well.
MDI Hospital aims to engage other service areas for planning participation including Care Management, Oncology Patient Navigators, select caregivers from the hospital and health centers, and colleagues from Health Acadia. The coaches will also engage with representatives from the Maine Center for Tobacco Independence and the Maine Quit Hotline to help integrate these free services into the program offerings.
The long-term goal of the Tobacco Treatment and Prevention Program is to make a positive, multi-generational, lasting impact on our county's rates of cigarette smoking, which remain unacceptably high despite previous attempts to intervene.

Community Dental Center Upgrades Dental Services with New Scanner Through a Northeast Delta Dental Foundation Grant
Southwest Harbor, Maine – Mount Desert Island (MDI) Hospital’s Community Dental Center (CDC) is excited to announce a significant upgrade to dental services by acquiring aFastscan.io Intraoral Scanner thanks to a Northeast Delta Dental Foundation Grant. The intraoral scanner is a lightweight, slender, wand-shaped device which captures direct optical impressions of a patient’s oral cavity by painlessly projecting a light source onto the area to be scanned. This state-of-the-art equipment will cut down on time spent in the office for patients, as a scan can be done in a fraction of the time it takes to mold a traditional physical impression.
The Community Dental Center has never had an intraoral scanner before, as modeling for dental work had previously been accomplished with conventional plastic impression trays. This plastic impression requires disposable arch trays, alginate compound, and dental stone that must also be kept on hand and utilized for each dental impression taken. These supplies represent an impactful, recurring expense, and are environmentally wasteful; waste that will be dramatically decreased through the use of this scanner.
The Community Dental Center is a patient-centered dental facility that fully integrates with MDI Hospital’s community-responsive approach to medicine. As a full-service oral health practice with a staff of seven, the CDC's services include preventive cleanings, extractions, restorations and fillings, root canals, and emergency treatment. The Center also offers pediatric dentistry, sealants, fluoride treatments, tooth whitening, and removable prosthetics. The Northeast Delta Dental Foundation has been a steadfast funding partner since the CDC’s opening in 2014.
Jane Ogembo, DDS, MPH has served as the Community Dental Center’s dentist since 2019. Having grown up in a small village in rural western Kenya, she understands how challenging it can be for residents in isolated areas to receive essential care. Dr. Ogembo’s professional journey has taken her from New York University College of Dentistry (DDS) and Boston University School of Public Health (MPH), then to dental practices in Iowa, New York, Massachusetts, and eastern Maine. As a member of the American Dental Association and the American Public Dental Health Association, she enjoys participating in their work to advance the profession and improve dental services on MDI.
MDI Hospital and the Community Dental Center deeply appreciate the Northeast Delta Dental Foundation’s grant funding for the Fastscan.io Intraoral Scanner, which will streamline a variety of dental services, saving time and money, while significantly improving the quality and patient comfort of oral impressions and the treatments that result from them.

Community Food Security Workshop to Offer Training and Resources
Ellsworth— The Hancock County Food Security Network will host a Community Food Security Workshop on Thursday, November 9, 2023, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m, at Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, 137 Downeast Highway (US-1), Ellsworth. The free event will offer training sessions and resources with the goal of building capacity and connections to tackle food insecurity in communities throughout Hancock County.
Service providers, volunteers, staff, and board members at food pantries, community meal sites, school backpack programs, allied organizations, and interested community members are invited to join members of the Hancock County Food Security Network for a half-day of training and conversation. The workshop will include updates on statewide food security programming, two main training sessions, and a shared meal.
In the first workshop session, local, state, and federal benefit program administrators and managers will share information about their services with the goal of increasing understanding of the resources available to people experiencing food insecurity. Participants will hear from experts on federal assistance programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), which provides eligible low-income individuals and families with funds to purchase nutritious food; WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) which supports low-income pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and young children by providing them with nutritious food, education, and healthcare referrals; and LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) which helps low-income households with their home energy costs, including heating and cooling expenses, to ensure they can maintain safe and comfortable living conditions. They will also explore transportation options, and more, and develop strategies to better support client access to these programs.
In the second workshop session, leaders from Heart of Maine United Way and Eastern Maine Development Corporation will offer their expertise on grant writing and fundraising through a panel discussion. Participants will learn about funding opportunities and best practices for crafting written proposals while gaining insight into the mind of a grant reviewer.
Participants will leave the workshop with a strengthened set of skills and tools for serving their clients and community members, new connections with leaders from other food security organizations, and the foundations of cross-network partnerships.
Those interested in participating are encouraged to register at https://forms.gle/QuWkiMvbj4UtZbbF7. This workshop is made possible in part through the generous support of the Lindsay Trust. Community scholarships are available for childcare and transportation costs for workshop participants.
