Construction Flagger Dies After Being Hit by Vehicle in Orland

ORLAND—A Searsport man was struck by a truck and killed while he was performing traffic control on the Acadia Highway this morning.
According to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Charles A. W. Resh, 24, of Searsport, was struck by a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado that was being driven by Clint Clagett, 70, of Bucksport. Resh was performing traffic control for a construction zone on Acadia Highway in Orland.
At approximately 6:57 a.m., Clagett was traveling east on Acadia Highway in Orland and approaching a construction zone for paving. While performing traffic control for the construction zone, Resh was permitting traffic to travel east in the westbound lane due to the eastbound lane being closed for paving. Clagett’s Silverado struck Resh while he was in the eastbound lane, causing fatal injuries to Resh.
Resh was transported to Northern Lights Maine Coast Memorial Hospital by ambulance where he died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
Clagett was not injured in the crash and the truck sustained damage to the front bumper, grill, and hood.
Detective Dylan Hall is the primary investigating officer. Chief Deputy William Birch, Lt. Brian Archer, Sgt. Kyle Kramer, Deputy Anthony Jones, and Deputy Ernest Fitch of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office assisted Hall at the scene. Bucksport Fire and Ambulance Service, the Orland Fire Department, District Attorney Robert Granger, and Maine State Police Trooper Steven Mahon also helped at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and no further details will be released at this time.
Trooper Steven Mahon is reconstructing the crash, which shut down the road for over two hours.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Maine Department of Transportation Paul Merill said that “the person struck was a contracted flagger working for Project Flagging.” The company’s headquarters are in Berwick.
