Crews Extinguishing Fires on St. Sauveur
ACADIA NATIONAL PARK—Late Saturday afternoon multiple crews responded to an active fire at the summit of St. Sauveur in Acadia National Park.
Firefighters spotted the first fire at 4:51 p.m. Approximately six minutes later, it was reported as an active fire with a size of 40 by 20 yards.
Personnel had searched down the trail for other ignition sites, and at 5:17 p.m., it was reported that there was a second ignition site further down a nearby trail with a potential similarly size fire.
Fire crews had to hike up the mountain to locate the fires. The forested trails in that area are considered moderate to difficult. There are steep slopes and granite ridge lines. Scrambling is often involved in hiking portions of the trail.
The Acadia Mountain lot, where many personnel staged is on Route 102, across from Echo Lake and just past the entrance to Ikes Point.
At approximately 5:05, a helicopter request from the state’s forest service was cancelled, but was in the area and it decided it will do a flyover.
At approximately 5:06, it was reported that all active fire was out at the first site. Just after 5:30 p.m., scanner traffic reported that the second site was contained.
At 5:25 p.m., scanner traffic indicated that the second fire was roughly the same size as the first and that a helicopter would be dropping a bucket of water on it. At the same time, a crew reached the first fire to mop it up. Another crew would work at the second site.
