BAR HARBOR—On Monday, September 30, Officer Stanwood received a report of a vehicle passing a stopped school bus in Bar Harbor and almost striking children who were getting off the bus.
The vehicle was located in Ellsworth and stopped by the Ellsworth Police Department and the unidentified driver was issued a citation for alleged passing a stopped school bus.

Officer Justin Burnett received a report in Bar Harbor regarding a juvenile who is an Ellsworth resident and advised the complainant that they need to call the Ellsworth Police Department.

Officer Zack Kline gave someone a ride from MDI Hospital back to their vehicle in Acadia National Park.
Officer Justin Burnett arrested Arthur Shepard, no age given, of Bangor in Bar Harbor, for alleged disorderly conduct and alleged violation of probation. Shepard was transported to the Hancock County Jail.
Officer Kline responded to a report of a possible dog that had been hit by a car in Bar Harbor. Officer Kline found it to be a coyote and had DOT remove the animal form the roadway.
Sgt. Soren Sundberg spoke with a Bar Harbor business representative that said a staff member may be calling regarding an uncooperative patron, but people at the business never called for assistance.
The Bar Harbor Police Department attempted to serve a protection order on someone in Bar Harbor for another agency but determined that the person was living elsewhere. Â
A woman in Bar Harbor made a delayed noise complaint and the information was documented.
Officer Amie Torrey assisted a Mount Desert resident with getting into their apartment.
An officer responded to the Old PD parking lot in Bar Harbor for a report of an unattended dog that may be in distress. Upon arrival, the officer found the dog to be fine and in the company of its owner.
The Bar Harbor Police Department took a report of a vehicle parked on private property with an animal inside of it. It was determined that the property owners were aware of the situation and that they would address it.
Officer Mora responded to a report of a vehicle that had pulled onto the soft shoulder of a road in Bar Harbor and become stuck. The vehicle was pulled out by another private citizen.

At the request of the property’s owner, Officer Lukas Keene checked a Bar Harbor residence for suspicious activity.
Sgt. Sundberg assisted a Bar Harbor business. No further information or disposition was given.
Jessica Beneski, 26, of Revere, Massachusetts, was driving a 2017 Toyota RAV4 when she allegedly left the roadway to the right sand struck a utility pole on the Indian Point Road in Bar Harbor. There was no personal injury and the vehicle was totaled.
Officer Torrey took a report of a suspicious man at a residence in Bar Harbor but the complainant called back and said that he left shortly after making the complaint. Â
The Bar Harbor Police Department took a report of a vehicle making unsafe passes in Bar Harbor, but all officers were out of position. The vehicle was heading toward Southwest Harbor, so the Southwest Harbor Police Department was notified.
Officer Torrey took a report from a man in Bar Harbor that his computer had been hacked.
Sgt. Sundberg is investigating a report of a vehicle passing a stopped school bus with its warning lights on in Bar Harbor.

A vehicle got stuck in the roadway, blocking a travel lane in Mount Desert, but was moved out of the road without issue.
Officer Nathan Formby performed a well-being check in Bar Harbor at a family member’s request and found the person to be checked on okay.

A lost dog was found by someone in Mount Desert and returned to its owner.
Someone reported a person acting disorderly on Cottage Street in Bar Harbor, but Officer Troy Stanwood was unable to locate anyone doing so.
Officer Kline took a motor vehicle complaint in Bar Harbor from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department regarding a vehicle heading towards the island but could not locate the suspect vehicle.

Officer Liam Harrington assisted a citizen in need in Bar Harbor.
Officer Payson took a report that the traffic lights at the intersection of Main Street and Sound Drive in Somesville were not cycling correctly, but he found them to be working correctly when he checked.
Officer Stanwood attempted to locate someone with an active arrest warrant in Mount Desert but was unable to locate the person.
Following a traffic stop, Officer Stanwood issued Jeffrey Spruill, 52, of Trenton, a civil citation for alleged operating after suspension.
Officer Harrington responded with the Bar Harbor Fire Department to a call involving a patient who was experiencing crisis. Â

After receiving a motor vehicle complaint in Bar Harbor, Officer Payson was able to locate the vehicle and speak with the driver about their operation.
Officer Payson attempted to locate a vehicle for another agency in Bar Harbor but could not locate the vehicle.
Officer Mora took a report of a civil dispute in Bar Harbor.
Officer Burnett performed a requested well-being check in Bar Harbor and found the person to be fine.
An outside agency requested a well-being check in Bar Harbor but cancelled the request while the officer was in route to the location.

Someone reported that someone was writing on the sidewalk in Bar Harbor. Â
Someone reported speeding vehicles during the afternoon traffic on Kebo Street in Bar Harbor.
Following a vehicle stop in Bar Harbor, Joseph Schmitt, 52, of Massachusetts, was arrested by Officer Formby for alleged operating under the influence and alleged violation of conditions of release.
Officer Judson Cake charged Stephen Leiser, 35, of Bar Harbor for alleged operating under the influence in Bar Harbor.

Officer Blakeney performed a well-being check on a Southwest Harbor resident but was unable to locate the person. No further information or disposition was given.
Officer Blakeney responded to a noise compliant in Southwest Harbor and spoke to a woman outside of the residence producing the noise. She was warned for disorderly conduct and advised that they were out of firewood and alcohol anyway so they would be shutting down the celebration which was for a friend who was leaving the area.
Officer Blakeney spoke with two people who were involved in a harassment complaint and advised one of the people to stop the behavior before it became enforceable.
Officer Bradley Russell served a protection order on someone in Southwest Harbor on behalf of another agency.
Officer Russell took a report of a package being stolen from a mailbox in Southwest Harbor. The complainant did not want the incident to be investigated but wanted it documented.
Officer Russell is investigating a report of items having been stolen from a basement in Tremont possibly by someone who had been rented the house for a couple of weeks.
The Southwest Harbor Police Department  received a 911 call regarding a missing person in Tremont but the person was located while the caller was still on the phone.
Officer Russell responded to a report of an injured deer in the roadway in Southwest Harbor but the deer was gone by the time he arrived.

Officer Blakeney is investigating a report of employee theft by a Southwest Harbor business.
Officer Blakeney attempted to locate a motor vehicle that was the subject of a complaint that the vehicle was making bad passes. The complaint had been passed on by the Bar Harbor Police Department, but he could not locate the suspect vehicle.

Officer Blakeney responded to a residence in Southwest Harbor for a reported verbal domestic. After investigation, Officer Blakeney arrested Brandon Tash, 27, of Southwest Harbor, for alleged domestic violence assault. Tash was transported to the Hancock County Jail.
Officer Russell took a report of a car pulled over to the side of the road in Southwest Harbor where the driver appeared to be passed out. When Officer Russell arrived, he spoke with the driver and learned that he was trying to get his navigational system to work but was having trouble due to poor signal.
Officer Russell assisted a Southwest Harbor resident with getting back into their apartment after they had locked themselves out.

Officer Russell responded to a 911 call in which the caller stated that they had heard an altercation on a roadway in Southwest Harbor. When Officer Russell arrived, he spoke with the people involved and learned that it was just a verbal argument that had resolved itself prior to his arriving.
Officer Russell received a complaint regarding a dog that was roaming at large and going onto other people’s property and getting into their trash. Officer Russell spoke with the complainants and the dog owner.
Officer Russell responded to a loose dog in the roadway complaint in Southwest Harbor and by the time he arrived the dog had been located by another person and returned to its owner.

Officer Blakeney responded to a report of a man passed out on Main Street and was able to wake the man who was incoherent. Officer Blakeney called for an ambulance whose staff treated the man on scene but the man refused transport to the hospital and was ultimately moved along.
Officer Blakeney responded to a report of a suicidal person in Southwest Harbor and after arriving and investigating learned that it was a family issue and the person was not suicidal.
Officer Blakeney took a report of a lock having been broken off a building in a Southwest Harbor park and responded to make sure that the building was still securely locked.
Officer Blakeney handled a report of a dead deer on the side of a Southwest Harbor roadway and asked the highway department to remove the animal.
Officer Blakeney responded to a report of an out-of-control juvenile at a Southwest Harbor residence. Officer Blakeney spoke to everyone involved and determined that it was a family issue that was handled in the home. Â

Maine State Police Investigates Workplace Death in Dayton
DAYTON—On Monday, September 23, 2024, at approximately 12:03 p.m., troopers from the Maine State Police, Southern Field Troop responded to Dayton Sand and Gravel for a report of a worker who’d been struck by a front-end loader. The investigation showed that 43-year-old Cory Maddox, of East Waterboro, was walking across the yard of Dayton Sand and Gravel when he was hit by the bucket of the front-end loader that was being operated by another worker at the time. Resuscitation efforts were made but were unsuccessful.
The incident is under investigation by OSHA. There is no sign of criminal activity involved. The Maine State Police was assisted by the York County Sheriff’s Department, Wells Police Department, Goodwins Mills Fire and Rescue, Mine Safety and Health Administration, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Maine State Police Investigates Roll Over in Freeport
FREEPORT—On Friday,  September 27, 2024, at approximately 6:58 a.m., a white GMC work van with five occupants was traveling north on I-295 in Freeport when for an unknown reason the driver, 29-year-old Edison Uscha-Roto, of South Portland, went off the roadway to the left, struck the crossover, rolled over and came to rest blocking lane one of I-295. Uscha-Roto was operating the vehicle with a suspended license. He and three other passengers were transported to Maine Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Cumberland, Freeport, and Yarmouth Rescues responded to assist as did Yarmouth and Freeport Police Departments. Copp Motors removed the overturned work van which was freighted with construction tools and equipment strewn across lane one and into the median. Lane one north bound was shut down for just shy of two hours. The investigation is ongoing.
Maine State Police and Fire Marshal’s Office Investigating Fatal Fire in Mexico
MEXICO—On Thursday, September 26, 2024, at approximately 7:09 a.m., Oxford County dispatch received a 911 call reporting a fire at 5 Tucker Street in the town of Mexico. The Mexico Fire Department and several area fire departments responded to the scene. First responders observed a fire burning, primarily from the front porch area. Firefighters were able to rescue one female from the residence using a ladder. She was not injured.
Once the fire was extinguished firefighters on scene discovered a deceased female inside the residence. The Maine State Fire Marshal’s office responded to the scene as well as the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South to conduct an investigation. The deceased female was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta where an autopsy was performed. The results of the autopsy are pending. The identity of the deceased is not being released at this time.
The investigation remains open and ongoing at this time. There is no danger to the public. Additional information will be released at a later date.
Maine State Police Investigates Assault on Windsor Business Owner
WINDSOR—On Thursday, September 26, 2024, at approximately 6:00 p.m., troopers from Central Field Troop responded to 142 Augusta Rockland Road in Windsor for a report of an out-of-control female that had assaulted a business owner and fled that location in what was discovered to be a stolen pick-up truck. The Maine State Police published a social media post requesting assistance with a photograph of the female subject taken by a witness to the assault.
The State Police received one credible tip based on this post and identified the female as 33-year-old Jenyfer Clark, of Augusta. The investigation continued well into the morning hours and through the assistance of troopers from Troop I, Central Field Troop troopers were able to confirm Clark’s whereabouts. At approximately 3:40 a.m., Clark was found hiding from troopers in Pittsfield on the Canaan Road and was taken into custody and transported to the Kennebec County Correctional Facility in Augusta. Â
She was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, assault, and violation of conditions of release. Clark also had an active probation revocation warrant as well as a warrant charging her with assault, disorderly conduct, and refusing to submit to arrest.
The Maine State Police would like to thank the public for assisting them in identifying the suspect in this case. The male business owner was not injured. The investigation continues and more charges are likely to follow.
Maine State Police Investigating Homicide in Biddeford
BIDDEFORD—On Friday, September 27, 2024, at approximately 10:53 p.m., the Biddeford Police Department received a 911 call for shots fired on Foss Street. First responders arrived to find an injured male. Emergency responders attempted to render aid, however the male, later identified as 46-year-old Gene Dares, of Biddeford, died at the scene. The deceased was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta where an autopsy was performed. The cause of death is gunshot wounds, and the manner of death is homicide. There is no known specific threat to the public.
The Biddeford Police Department and the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South continue to investigate the incident. No other information is being released at this time.
