Island Fire and Police Respond to Suspected Arson on Stanley Mountain Road
Short search ends with suspect detained and in custody
MOUNT DESERT—Mount Desert and Bar Harbor fire and police units were joined by multiple agencies as they searched for an alleged arsonist Monday afternoon.
The police believe that the man allegedly may have set fire to a residence at 108 Stanley Mountain Road. The initial dispatch, shortly after 2 p.m., said that a woman saw through a home security camera that there was a man on the front porch of her residence at 18 Stanley Mountain Road. He allegedly had a gas tank and a lighter. According to the scanner, she could see the flame of the lighter, but the flame did not catch.
The police discovered, upon arrival, that 108 Stanley Mountain was on fire. According to Mount Desert property records, both homes are owned by the same person.
The road is quite narrow and was blocked by a ranger from Acadia National Park to keep people from entering and exiting while firefighters dealt with the blaze and police officers tried to locate the suspect.
That search was then refocused for a blue Audi in the Seal Harbor area. Shortly after 3:20 p.m., the police found the suspect at another location on Stanley Mountain Road. Scanner traffic also indicated that the Audi was found on Stanley Mountain Road as well.
The fire marshal was on scene, Monday afternoon. There has been no report of injuries.
This story is developing. We will be updating this story either here or on our police log tomorrow.
Updated: It is all at Stanley Mountain Road, none at Stanley Brook Road. That was a typo and absolutely my fault. It was also updated at 6:30 p.m. to show photos of the building.
