Late Night Fire in Downtown Bar Harbor Fortunately Contained
Potentially horrific fire knocked down before it could do real damage
BAR HARBOR—At approximately 12:30 a.m., June 2, Bar Harbor firefighters responded to 39 Cottage St., the Odd Fellows Hall building, for a fire in the alley between the Cadillac North Face store and Langosta Tacos and Cantina. The fire was quickly extinguished and investigation revealed that the fire did not penetrate into the interior of the North Face store.
Fire fighters did have to open up the interior walls on the first and second floors of the Odd Fellows Hall to ensure that no fire was within the walls. While the location of these buildings is extraordinarily convenient to firefighters, the fast response and containment of a fire is crucial in this section of Bar Harbor due to the proximity of neighboring buildings. A structure fire in the Odd Fellows Hall could eradicate both that landmark and the Criterion Theatre.
According to Bar Harbor Fire Chief Matt Bartlett, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
An employee for Cadillac Mountain Sports group of businesses said Sunday afternoon that the fire did not breach the interior of the store, but there was a substantial amount of smoke and water damage. The doors of the store were open and a large fan was venting the store which smelled strongly of smoke.
Even with the smell of smoke, pedestrian control stanchions, a very large fan, and a sign saying that the store was closed for the day due to a fire, people were still trying to get into the store according to that same employee.
