Judge Richard S. Cohen and Professor Seth Singleton
SOUTHWEST HARBOR — On Tuesday, October 22nd at 5:30-7:00 p.m. at the Southwest Harbor Public Library, join us for “A Republic, if we can keep it: but can we under this Constitution?” Judge Richard S. Cohen and professor of political science Seth Singleton will discuss the impact of the upcoming election on our electoral and legal system and our political future. Judge Cohen will focus on our Constitutional traditions, the history of the election laws and the distortions they produce. Professor Singleton will compare our present situation to the experience of other countries and will present some scenarios. All are invited to come and share their views on where we are now and what may happen. Registration encouraged for this in-person only talk.
Richard S. Cohen (BA Princeton '56, JD Yale '59) is a retired judge of the New Jersey Superior Court, Appellate Division. He was a trial judge for ten years and an appellate judge for eleven, during which he authored 148 opinions published in the official court reports. After retiring from the bench in 1994, he conducted a mediation and arbitration practice until 2017, when he moved permanently to Mt. Desert Island with his wife, Pamela Hattem. He has taught seven Acadia Senior College courses on various topics in constitutional law and history.
Seth Singleton has taught political science at universities in the United States and overseas, most recently at the University of Maine. He studies political change, civil violence, and revolution and why it does or does not happen. He lived in Russia at the time of the Soviet collapse and has also worked in Africa, Latin America, Vietnam, and Mongolia. Seth Singleton lives in Mount Desert and appreciates the vibrant community on Mount Desert Island.

Acadia Wildlife Center to Share Its Work
NORTHEAST HARBOR—On Thursday, October 24th from 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm the Acadia Wildlife Center (AWC) will present on their work rehabilitating injured wildlife at the Northeast Harbor Library.
With the help of their ambassador animals—non-releasable wildlife that help educate the public—representatives of the AWC will share stories from the organization’s 30 years of work and provide a glimpse into how serving wildlife in need builds bridges between people and the environment.
Founded in 1994, the AWC maintains a clinic for native wildlife; patients are treated by trained professionals with licenses from Inland Fisheries and Wildlife of Maine, and the federal government. Animals are brought to the AWC clinic by game wardens, vets, police, marine patrol, and by many members of the general public. AWC is located on fifteen acres of private land adjacent to Acadia National Park.

About Acadia Writing Center: At its core, Acadia Writing Center (AWC) is designed to inspire and nurture writers of all levels. Though still in its early stages, we’re planning community writing events, immersive retreats, and opportunities to connect with fellow writers. Stay tuned for updates from AWC as we work to bring this exciting vision to life.
