BAR HARBOR—A January 25 social media post stated that an ICE agent followed a young man home last week. However, a police department representative said Tuesday that this was the first he had heard of it and that the incident had not been reported to the local police department.
The post comes as President Donald Trump has called for illegal immigration crack downs, which have worried some residents on Mount Desert Island.
Bar Harbor and Mount Desert are both considered to be sanctuary communities.
In 2017, after a citizens’ petition, Mount Desert voters declared 101-59 that the town would be a “sanctuary community.” The non-binding resolution hoped to “protect the independence of our local law enforcement by refusing to require police or town employees to serve as enforcers of federal immigration law.”
It was the first town in Maine to do so.
That same year, Bar Harbor residents voted 351-62 to support declaring that town a sanctuary community.
CNN defines a sanctuary city as “a broad term applied to jurisdictions that have policies in place designed to limit cooperation with or involvement in federal immigration enforcement actions. Cities, counties, and some states have a range of informal policies as well as actual laws that qualify as ‘sanctuary’ positions.”
On a recent Instagram post, Project Relief Maine describes itself as “Black immigrant activists who have dedicated our lives to fighting for justice and equity even when it means risking our safety.”
In a message, Tuesday, the group confirmed that an individual had sent them an alert that an ICE vehicle had followed them and then the group informed the public as is their protocol. They have asked the man for images and other details to help bring awareness.
We’ve reached out to the regional ICE field office, which has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Maine Drug Enforcement Arrests Six In Sanford
SANFORD—For the past month, responding to citizen complaints and tips from community members, agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency (MDEA) York District Task Force and officers of the Sanford Police Department conducted an investigation into illegal drug trafficking from 8 York Street. During the investigation, agents and officers observed activity consistent with illegal drug trafficking as well as individuals trafficking illegal drugs being armed with firearms.
During the investigation a number of undercover purchases of fentanyl were made from John Leroy Gray who lives at the 8 York Street home.
On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at approximately 9:30 a.m., the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and Sanford Police executed a search warrant at 8 York Street in Sanford, a single-family home in order to effect the arrest of Gray for felony arrest warrants for drug trafficking.
Due to the seriousness of the drug trafficking charges, suspected firearms possession, and safety concerns for the neighborhood residents and officers, the Southern Maine Special Response Team assisted in tactically rendering the residence safe and secure for agents.
The Special Response Team encountered and detained seventeen people throughout the residence, including Gray who was arrested without incident.
All people encountered at the residence were identified and released at the scene with the exception of the six listed arrests who had outstanding arrest warrants. All arrests were transported to the York County Jail without incident.

Maine Drug Enforcement Arrests Westbrook Man For Trafficking Fentanyl
WESTBROOK—In December 2024, agents from the Cumberland District Task Force of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency (MDEA) and officers of the Westbrook Police Department, received a number of complaints/tips regarding suspected illegal drug trafficking taking place at 43 Rochester Street in Westbrook. Agents observed activities consistent with illegal drug trafficking from the first-floor apartment of 43 Rochester Street at all hours of the day and night.
During the ongoing investigation, agents were able to conduct several undercover purchases of illegal drugs from Christopher Ciprian, 41, at his Rochester Street apartment.
Agents subsequently applied for and were granted an arrest warrant for Ciprian, as well as a search warrant for his apartment.
On January 23, at approximately 9:30 a.m., members of the Cumberland County Emergency Services Unit (ESU), a specially trained tactical team took Ciprian into custody without incident as he left his apartment. Due to a number of safety concerns identified during the investigation, to include the seriousness of the drug trafficking charges and Ciprian possibly being armed, the ESU was utilized to minimize the risk to Rochester Street residents and law enforcement personnel by tactically securing the apartment prior to agents conducting a search.
A search of Ciprian’s apartment resulted in the seizure of approximately 80 grams of cocaine, 30 grams of MDMA (Methylenedioxymethamphetamine) more commonly known as Ecstasy, a loaded Glock 9mm handgun, and other evidence of illegal drug trafficking. Approximate value of the seized drugs is $12,000.
Ciprian was charged with trafficking in schedule W drugs (Fentanyl), two counts, class B and felony possession of schedule drugs (Fentanyl), two counts, class C. Bail was set at $10,000 cash.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges against Ciprian are expected.

Fire Marshal’s Office Teams up with Dover Foxcroft Fire Department to Present Three Teenagers with Community Heroism Awards
DOVER-FOXCROFT—On January 1, 2025, at 1:44 a.m., a residential house fire was reported at 110 North Stagecoach Road in the Town of Atkinson. The structure, an 1800s farmhouse with an attached barn, was fully engulfed in flames when emergency responders arrived. The Fire Marshal's Office was called to conduct an origin and cause investigation. Due to the extent of the damage, the fire has been classified as undetermined, with multiple accidental electrical causes not ruled out.
Three local teenage boys are being hailed as heroes for discovering the fire and helping the homeowners escape. State Fire Marshal Shawn Esler remarked, “Had they not been in the right place at the right time, this could have been a much more tragic fire event.”
On Friday, January 24, 2025, members of the Dover Foxcroft Fire Department, State Fire Marshal’s Office (FMO), and State Legislators gathered at Foxcroft Academy to recognize the actions of three young men who recently rescued two occupants from a house fire in Atkinson.
16-year-old Colby Simmons of Dover-Foxcroft, 15-year-old Kaleb Weymouth of Charleston, and 17-year-old Robert Weymouth of Charleston, all received awards after they spotted a large fire at a home on North Stagecoach Road in the Town of Atkinson on January 1, 2025.
They first banged on the doors of the residence. When no one answered, they entered a portion of the home not yet involved in fire, woke the occupants, alerted them of the emergency, and the helped them to safety. Additionally, the young men placed a 911 call alerting the authorities. Had they not been there, the occupants may not have escaped the ever-growing fire. The actions of these young men were heroic and deserving of recognition.
The plaque presented by FMO Sergeant John Wardwell and Dover Foxcroft Fire Chief Brian Gaudet reads, “Community Heroism Award. The Dover-Foxcroft Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office present (name) with this Community Heroism Award. The citizens of the State of Maine thank you for your selfless act on January 1, 2025, in saving two people from a house fire in the town of Atkinson.”
State Representative Chad Perkins also presented the young men with challenge coins and a commendation letter from the Maine Legislature.
It is important to note that fire is deadly, claiming the lives of many people every year. We do not intend to encourage people to place themselves in harm’s way. However, in specific and often rare instances, the State Fire Marshal’s Office will present Community Heroism Awards to those whose actions are deserving.

On Thursday, January 23, 2025, Lewiston Police conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle leaving 100 College Street. During the traffic stop, one of the four occupants fled from the police, throwing a firearm as he fled. The suspect got away but has been identified. Officers discovered bullet holes entering several apartments at 100 College Street to include Apartment 4. Firearm related evidence was also seized from outside of the building. No one was injured.

A search of the apartment resulted in the seizure of over three pounds of marijuana, approximately $3,400 in suspected drug proceeds, and additional evidence of illegal drug trafficking. Evidence associated with firearms to include various calibers of ammunition, magazines, and other firearm related items were also seized.
Additionally, it was revealed that in the early morning hours of Wednesday, January 15, 2025, an unknown person(s) shot at 100 College Street, where bullets entered an apartment living room.
