MDI High School Determines Today's Email Threat Not Credible
Superintendent Releases Statement to Dispel Potential Rumors
BAR HARBOR—A potential threat to the MDI High School today was deemed not credible, according to an email sent by MDI School Superintendent Michael Zboray shortly after noon today.
The threat came via an unsent email.
“A student identified the threat and brought it directly to the attention of their teacher, who immediately reported it to the school administration,” Zboray said later this afternoon.
He commended the student and teacher for taking quick action.
“This morning, we addressed a potential threat identified in an email at MDI High School,” Zboray wrote. “The school's administration and school resource officer (SRO) immediately began investigating the situation in collaboration with the Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Police Departments. It was quickly determined that the unsent email did not present a credible threat, and it was safe for everyone to remain in school today.”
The situation comes approximately two years after a threat that was deemed credible in last October 2022, put the school on lockdown. At the time, the Bar Harbor Police Department said that the lockdown and evacuation was considered precautionary. Students had been bused to Mount Desert Elementary School in Northeast Harbor before being released and reunited with their families.
Back in 2016, a bomb threat that had been deemed credible, evacuated the high school as well. That threat came via a message in the boys’ restroom.
Today’s threat did not entail that sort of action, but Zboray wanted to make sure that rumors did not spread about the events.
“I am sharing this information with our school community to maintain transparency and prevent the spread of rumors or misinformation,” he wrote.
“I am grateful for the prompt and careful response of our police partners. I also want to remind parents and students of the importance of staying vigilant about any concerns related to students or the school. Reporting these concerns promptly to school, district, or local police is essential to maintaining the highest level of safety and security in our schools. Remember: if you see something, say something,” he wrote.
