BAR HARBOR—Maine State Police announced today that the two deaths in Great Pond on May 20 were a murder-suicide. Marie Robbins, who grew up in Somesville, had been found in the remains of her Great Pond home. She was killed by her ex-boyfriend whose body was also found at the scene.
“At approximately 5:00 a.m., the Aurora Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 23 Old Dam Way in Great Pond,” wrote Public Information Officer Shannon Moss of the Maine State Police. “Once on scene, the Aurora Fire Department notified the State’s Fire Marshal’s Office as it was determined to be a fatal fire where two bodies were discovered.”
The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North helped to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire and the deaths.
“Both bodies were transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner where autopsies were conducted. The OCME identified one victim as the occupant of the residence, 35-year-old Marie Robbins. The OCME ruled the cause of death as undetermined and the manner of death as homicide. The second deceased individual was identified as 38-year-old Ryan Devisme of Aurora,” Moss announced. “The OCME has determined cause of death as toxic effects of carbon monoxide with the presence of a gunshot wound and manner of death as suicide. The investigation indicates that Devisme set the house on fire before sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Robbins and Devisme were in a former relationship together. No other information is being released at this time.”
Robbins was a 2007 graduate of MDI High School and an avid equestrian who participated in barrel racing. Her horses were not injured in the fire, and according to the Bangor Daily News’ Bill Trotter, are now with her parents on Mount Desert Island.
Robbins was a volunteer firefighter and poll watcher as well, Trotter reported.
“Robbins also worked at Lunaform, a company in Sullivan that makes large ornamental concrete pots by hand. She worked there for a decade, serving as operations and color studio manager for the past four years, staffers said,” he said.
Just about half of homicides in Maine, from 2020-2022, are considered acts of domestic violence. Most of those killed are women. According to the Maine State Police, “Of the 22 homicides for 2020, five were domestic violence related. Nine were domestic violence related in 2019.”
According to Robbins’ obituary, “She did competitive jumping, barrel racing, and was training a new filly that she had rescued. Marie was curious, explored, and shared her discoveries, whether it be chaga, chantarelles, fiddleheads, and her inspired videos, with us.”
