MOUNT DESERT—Mount Desert is likely going to be locking down its trash a bit more.
The Mount Desert Selectboard heard details about probable new measures to try to help secure the town’s trash areas a bit more. One site at the marina will likely have a fence around the existing dumpster area and a gate that locks with key code access to get into it. The harbormaster already deals with locks and codes, and he could give the code to those using slips and moorings.
There are several cameras around the marina and one may be added so that the dumpster location will be covered.
At the town garage, the town is also going to secure the campus a bit more. They’ll likely have some more enclosed gates to limit access to vehicles mostly from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., from Monday through Friday.
“Weekends are the more difficult part,” when it comes to staffing the more controlled access areas Public Works Director Brian Henkel said. At the garage, there are only three hours of coverage on each weekend day and the hours aren’t always consistent.
A concern about people from other towns potentially taking salt and sand from the Mount Desert town supply was also discussed. Selectboard Vice Chair Wendy Littlefield also asked about the small containers of waste oil that is commonly left at the trash collection sites. The town can currently handle the amounts being left, Henkle said.
In other business, the selectboard approved appointing Theodore Cake as a paid on-call firefighter at the starting pay of $18 an hour and the appointment of William Renault as a per diem firefighter at a starting pay of $25.97, a downward correction from earlier this fall.
The selectboard appointed both Theresa Burr and Kathleen Miller as election clerks for the November 5, 2024 election.
The board also authorized the replacement of a 40’x 6’ section of the town’s dingy dock using Seawood Services Inc. for $11,191.60 to be paid out of the Northeast Harbor Floats CIP # 6410100-24681, with a balance of $362,530.91.
