On The Agenda - Bar Harbor Town Meetings & Things to Do
ON THE AGENDA
Every week we document Bar Harbor town government, school, and other similar meetings that we know of. Please let us know if we’ve missed something. Also, sometimes things are on the town calendars and are cancelled or rescheduled, so make sure to double check before you head over!
All the meetings take place at the Bar Harbor Municipal Building at 93 Cottage Street unless otherwise noted. And they usually have a time for public comments. This is not true about executive sessions, which are closed to the public.
So, go! Be informed! Be part of the process. You deserve to be.

GET YOUR SCREENING ON!
Please join Founder and Director of The Community School, Jasmine Smith and Nikolai Fox on October 14th at 5:00 PM, upstairs in College of the Atlantic's Davis Center for Human Ecology (room CHE-202), for a public screening and discussion.
Since March, we have been using an observational documentary approach to film the school's programs. At this event, we will show a less than twenty minute in-process reel followed by a Q&A / discussion about place-based education and observational documentary filmmaking.
A 2:15min example of the reel is here: www.nikolaifox.net
GET YOUR HERO ON!
BAR HARBOR FIRE DEPARTMENT
To check if Bar Harbor Fire Department is currently hiring, please go to the town’s jobs page.
But even if it isn’t, you can become a call member
Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

Want support for your craft? The Write On! writer’s group has been meeting at the Jesup since 2014, and remotely during the pandemic. Each meeting, members may bring in up to 1200 words to read for feedback, and in turn offer feedback to others. Although each member doesn’t get to read work every time, the group shares the time fairly. The group meets on Zoom, and hold in confidence what is shared. This group welcomes adults 18 and up writing in many genres. There’s no homework–the only commitment is two hours on Saturday mornings.

WRITE ON!!!
Please join us at the Jesup Memorial Library for a program with Write On! - Authors Share Their Works on Thursday, September 28th at 7 pm.
Jesup Memorial Library's Write On! group has been meeting, in person and remotely, on Saturday mornings since 2014. Attendees share group leadership, bringing manuscripts of fiction, memoir, poetry, and just about anything else for individualized feedback, and in turn offering feedback for others. Join them to hear more about their work and find out how to become a member.
Read on to find out more about the writers!
Carol Woolman published her first story about a rafting trip in the Arctic that changed her life. In 2013 she self-published a book for the Library of Congress Veterans History Project about her father that is both a family history and a WWII memoir. Her current work, Ecology of Grief, A Mother’s Witness, is about living through the violent death of her 25-year-old son Mark Horner. It includes the penetrating and numbing sorrow but also adventure, surprise, mystery and meaning. She feels a sense of urgency to find a publisher for this book.
Steven Roiphe holds a nonrefundable degree from Harvard. His prose has appeared in a number of literary magazines, garnering a Pushcart Prize nomination. He lives with his wife and young son in Lamoine, where he has recently finished writing a novel that follows a rogue deity’s quest to spark justice down through American history; now he’s searching for a book agent to help take his work to the next level. You can follow Steve on Twitter, @StevenRoiphe.
Jackie Campbell wrote her first short story in the 3rd grade and has been writing ever since. She has published some of her work but believes her biggest accomplishment has been balancing work with motherhood while also caring for her parents and a spouse. Jackie currently lives in the Minneapolis area and is hoping to get back to Maine soon. In the meantime, she is focusing on writing a young adult novel about a teen with a father who has dementia.
Before children, Joan FitzGerald was an award-winning financial news reporter. Since children, she has written short stories and essays, and a middle grade, environmental fantasy. She is currently at work on an adult dystopian novel. Joan lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts and has been a summer resident of Mt. Desert Island since birth. The Jesup Writers group has been an essential support for her work. She writes all year ’round but writes best here, on this island in Maine.
Andrew McQuinn got his degree in video production from the New England School of Communications. After graduating he spent six years in Las Vegas, working as a stagehand. He now resides in Bangor where he works as an Ed Tech at a preschool for special needs kids. When he’s not writing, Andrew is spending time with his feline fur baby Marty, Sir Martin if he’s feeling extra dignified. Andrew has several novels in the works he hopes to get published over the next year or two. Playing it out Straight is his debut novel.
Tom Bertrand will also be sharing his writing.
This event is a hybrid program and registration is required to attend either in person or on Zoom. Register at jesuplibrary.org/events/writeon or email eventsignup@jesuplibrary.org.
FINDING VOICES
Please join us at the Jesup Memorial Library for Finding Our Voices “Let’s Talk About It,” a community conversation led by a panel of survivors about emotional abuse and the impact on children on Mount Desert Island on Wednesday, October 4th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Posters featuring photo portraits of 45 Maine survivors aged 18 to 83 paired with details of the abuse the women transcended are on exhibit at Jesup Memorial Library in Bar Harbor and the libraries of Northeast Harbor, Southwest Harbor and Bass Harbor, as well as in the downtown windows, dressing rooms and bathrooms of the business community.
The in-person program includes powerful short films on the subject, and a public reception with refreshments for continuing conversation with Finding Our Voices survivors. The events are free and open to the public. According to Patrisha McLean, founder/president of Finding Our Voices, these events are part of the innovative ways the survivor-powered grassroots nonprofit is ending the stigma and shame that are key factors in keeping women and children trapped in domestic abuse.
Finding Our Voices is also gifting the four MDI libraries with a set of its favorite domestic abuse-themed books. These include three books written by survivors on the Finding Our Voices posters, “The Road to After” by Rebekah Lowell, “Household” by Deb Gould, and “Savaged to Wellness” by Melody Paul.
The Finding Our Voices posters and bookmarks will be on display on the island through October’s Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, educating all to the complexity and ubiquity of domestic abuse and letting survivors know they are not alone and of the help that is out there for them. Sponsors of the Finding Our Voices MDI program are Stanley Auto, ArtWaves, Shaw Jewelry, The Knowles Company, Artemis Gallery, Nor’Easter lobster pound and market, Copita restaurant and Smart Studio.
Other stops on the Finding Our Voices fall “Let’s Talk About It” tour include October 11th at the Millinocket Public Library, October 17th at the York Public Library, October 18th at Kennebunk Free Library, November 7th at Skidompha Library in Damariscotta, and November 28th at the Camden Public Library. On November 28th at the Camden Public Library where Finding Our Voices first launched as a photo exhibit of Patrisha’s photo portraits of survivors in 2019, a panel of men will discuss the domestic abuse they endured as children and lead a community conversation about the subject.
Finding Our Voices is survivors of domestic abuse boldly breaking the silence of domestic abuse through bold public awareness as well as financial assistance and programs including dignified, pro bono dental care for Maine’s women and children survivors. Gathering and amplifying voices, the grassroots nonprofit galvanizes action toward more safety, rights, services, and justice for Maine women and children. For more information visit
https://findingourvoices.net
. Patrisha McLean started the nonprofit after her own silence was broken with worldwide headlines on the domestic violence arrest of her then-husband Don “American Pie” McLean.

ADULT STORYTIME FOR BANNED BOOKS
Please join us at the Jesup Memorial Library Banned Books Week Adult Storytime on Thursday, October 5th at 7 p.m.
Adult Storytime is the Jesup’s unique presentation of controversial books, where six members of our community will read excerpts from books that have been banned or challenged. Each book is chosen by its reader. This is its fifth iteration. As with children’s bedtime story times, pj’s, robes, and slippers are appropriate attire.
This year’s participants include Mollie Cashwell, Darron Collins, Anna Durand, Jeff Miller, Kyle Shank, and Ruth Eveland. The theme for Banned Books Week 2023 is “Let Freedom Read.” The American Library Association notes that “Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. For more than 40 years, the annual event has brought together the entire book community — librarians, teachers, booksellers, publishers, writers, journalists, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
This year there are more challenges than ever, as documented by the American Library Association and other organizations. Making books unavailable to potential readers limits their opportunities to learn about people, places, and perspectives beyond their own lives. For some background, including information about what is going on in Maine, please listen to a program produced by the League of Women Votes – Downeast that was broadcast on WERU: https://archives.weru.org/democracy-forum/2023/09/democracy-forum-9-15-23-book-banning-the-tip-of-the-iceberg/. There are also many links to additional information on that webpage.
This event is a hybrid program and registration is required to attend either in person or on Zoom. Register at jesuplibrary.org/events/ or email eventsignup@jesuplibrary.org.

HEALTHY ACADIA
Healthy Acadia to Screen Its Documentary Film on October 12 in Machias
Healthy Acadia invites community members to join them for a special viewing of “Together: Community Health Champions” on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at 5 p.m. at the University of Maine at Machias (UMM) located at 116 Obrien Ave, Machias. The film screening will be held in the Science 102 in the Science Building.
In 2021, as part of Healthy Acadia's 20th-year anniversary celebration, the organization embarked on its first-ever, in-house documentary film production which premiered in November 2022, with both an in-person event and a virtual showing. The 33-minute film, “Together: Community Health Champions,” shines a light on six incredible individuals selected through a Washington and Hancock County-wide nomination process as Community Health Champions. These inspirational community members go above and beyond to increase the well-being of our communities, each in their own unique way. Their stories inspire and affirm that we all can and do meaningfully contribute every day to building healthy, resilient communities - and that we do our best work in partnership, together.
The organization recently learned that their film was selected for screening at the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) Public Health Film Festival in November. The film festival is a unique component of American Public Health Association's Annual Meeting that offers a versatile way to learn and creatively spark the conversation about health. The film festival screens public health films of all types and topics from around the globe - including theme-related pieces and those that explore and highlight public health locally, nationally and globally and demonstrate, educate, inspire and encourage a change for a healthier future. You must be registered for APHA 2023 to watch films and participate in any film festival sessions and events.
Deaf and hard-of-hearing and Spanish language translations are available for the screening events. The events are free and open to all. To register for the event please visit: https://bit.ly/HealthChampionsFilmUMM. An RSVP is not required, but strongly encouraged. For more information find Healthy Acadia on Facebook or visit their website at www.healthyacadia.org.
Healthy Acadia is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that engages in a broad range of initiatives to build healthier communities and make it easier for people to lead healthy lives across Washington and Hancock counties, Maine. Learn more at www.healthyacadia.org.

The band was founded by composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist David Andrew Moore who studied at the Berklee School of Music. Moore will be joined by Joe Albano on woodwinds and Greg Toro on bass.
The members of The Arcanauts Trio have been performing together in various formats for over 20 years. The band has recorded two EPs exploring a range of styles and instrumentation, but in recent years has focused on exploring the traditions and possibilities of the saxophones/ bass/ drums format. The band's repertoire draws from the American songbook, great jazz composers of the twentieth century, and original compositions inspired by the global African diaspora. Their second EP "The Hermit" was featured in DigBoston's Some Seriously Great Tracks from the Past Year in 2021.

TREMONT:
BAR HARBOR:
According to the town’s website, “Meetings that are broadcast live can be viewed at home by watching Cable Access Channel 7 or 1303 (Spectrum Cable only) and online at Town Hall Streams.”
“Things We Do in Bar Harbor” and “On the Agenda” is mostly curated by me looking for things happening in the upcoming week, which takes a lot of time and I truly do not know all that is going on.
If there’s something in Bar Harbor (or MDI) that you’d like me to mention, please let me know, because I’m definitely always missing some events every week.
