People We've Lost
Duncan S. Fletcher, Roger Ernest Dam, Elizabeth (Libby) Pomroy, David Allen Peckham
Note: “People We’ve Lost” is a feature of the Bar Harbor Story where we share obituaries of people that the island lost in the previous 1-2 weeks. We’re doing this because we think everyone deserves to be remembered. If you have an obituary for a loved one or friend that you can’t afford to place in other spaces, please let us know and we’ll share it here for you.
Duncan S. Fletcher
Bar Harbor
Duncan S. Fletcher passed away unexpectedly on May 10, 2025, at his residence. He was born on September 5, 1949, in Newton, MA, the son of Winthrop and Frances (C. Searway) Fletcher.
Duncan grew up in Northeast Harbor and graduated from MDI High School in 1969. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served during the Vietnam conflict. After his honorable discharge, Duncan embarked on many adventures, working in boatyards and aboard yachts in New York, North Carolina, and Florida. He was especially proud of his time working with A&E (owned by Budweiser).
Later, Duncan returned to Bar Harbor, where he worked as a cook in numerous local establishments. He was well known around town, often seen walking the streets with a kind word for everyone he passed. Duncan had a gift for storytelling, and those lucky enough to spend time with him were often treated to rich, colorful tales from his life.
He faced life with quiet strength and acceptance, never complaining—even during his final days. As a family, we are especially grateful to the many people in town who supported Duncan over the years with rides to and from work, and most importantly, time for a friendly chat. Your kindness meant the world to him and to us.
Duncan is survived by his brother Wilson (Bill) Fletcher of Bar Harbor, and his children, his brother Dexter Fletcher and wife Belinda of Billerica, and their children; several nieces and nephews, including great- and great-great-nieces and nephews, all of whom he held close to his heart. He was predeceased by his parents and younger brother Lawrence (Larry).
Duncan will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
A graveside service in Northeast Harbor will be held at a later date.

Elizabeth (Libby) Pomroy
Hall Quarry

Elizabeth (Libby) Pomroy of Bar Harbor, Maine, died peacefully May 9, 2025, at MDI Hospital in Bar Harbor.
Libby was born on Sept. 22, 1942, to parents Harold Gonzales and Arline Sanborn Gonzales in Bar Harbor. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, caregiver, cook, and great friend to many.
She grew up in Hall Quarry and graduated from Mount Desert High School. It was in Hall Quarry where she met her future husband, Roger Pomroy. They got married Aug. 3, 1962, and were married for 59 years until Roger’s passing in 2021.
Libby was pure joy and happiness. The fun mother, aunt, grandmother, friend, and coworker that lived life heart first. She was a shining example that living life with kindness and love draws in the best people and melts the hardest of hearts. She loved kids and animals and would do anything for them. She wanted nothing but to be loved, and loved she was by everyone that knew her.
She would give the shirt not only off her back, but Roger’s too, as was evident when he would get ready for work and be missing belts, clothes, and shoes because she had given them to nursing home residents when she worked as a nurse’s aide.
She loved music, swimming in the quarries, family gatherings, vacations, and taking the kids in her Volkswagen Bug. She once got her three kids and six nieces and nephews into her Volkswagen to get ice cream. A particularly steep hill required a push from some of the kids. When a bridge was flooded in Seal Harbor, she drove and floated across in the same car. God was on her side. She was the salt of the earth, played her music loud, slapped her leg to the beat, and sang for everyone to hear. She hugged everyone she met.
Visits from family, friends and dogs at Malvern Belmont, and from church and women’s bible study, always had her buzzing with excitement.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Roger; her sister, Patricia (Pat) Robinson; her brothers, Rolf Wayne, Ralph Gonzales, and James (Jamie) Gonzales; and her great-grandson, Jacob Oaks.
She is survived by her daughter Wendy Hogan and partner Glenn Mashburn of Tremont; daughter Holly Savage and husband Brian Savage of Tremont; son, David Pomroy of Tremont; her sister Joan Carter of Otter Creek; Mike and Laura Eastman; her best friend Donna Cameron; grandchildren, Theresa Pomroy, Jessie Pomroy and partner Chris Richards, and David Savage and fiancé Leah Utley; her great-grandchildren, Trevor, James, Meagan, Kingsley, Ryleigh, Andi, Talula, Ben, Trace, Xylieh, and Connor; and her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and some aunts and uncles.
A service followed by light refreshments will be held June 7, 2025, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 46 Ledgelawn Ave, Bar Harbor, Maine.
Roger Ernest Dam

Roger Ernest Dam, 74, of Peachtree City, Ga., and Southwest Harbor, Maine, passed away on May 17, 2025, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Roger was born on Aug. 19, 1950, in Bar Harbor, Maine, to Samuel and Betty Dam.
After graduating from Pemetic High School in 1968, he went on to study finance at The University of Houston. He was a well-respected and valued professional who had a deep commitment to the service of his customers. Roger was generous and loving and a great friend who would travel hundreds of miles from his intended destination to visit his friends and family. He was deeply committed to Margie and Lauren, who was the apple of his eye from birth. He spent many wonderful years coaching her and her teammates in softball. More recently, he got great joy from his two grandsons, who supplied plenty of energy and delight in his final years.
Roger loved music and food. As a fan of country music, he frequently could be heard belting out tunes by Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Blake Shelton, and others. He danced a great Texas Two-Step. As a self-taught chef, he generously and frequently shared his passion for gourmet food and a good vintage with those around him.
Roger was an athlete who was good at any sport that he fancied, including baseball, basketball, tennis, golf, and long-distance running. He was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Dallas Cowboys.
