BAR HARBOR—On July 3, Janet Meryweather, 88, of Bar Harbor, was backing out of the parking spaces in front of Paradis Ace Hardware when she struck a utility pole across the street with the rear of her vehicle.
After striking the pole, Meryweather allegedly accelerated forward and drove through the front of the Ace Hardware building, just to the right of the front doors. Meryweather was evaluated by paramedics at the scene and refused transportation to the hospital.
A customer inside of the store was struck by Meryweather’s vehicle and suffered some minor injuries. The customer was evaluated by paramedics at the scene but refused transportation to the hospital. Later that evening, the customer reported to the police department that they had gone to the MDI Hospital for treatment of a laceration to their right lower leg, a concussion, multiple contusions, and multiple abrasions.
The vehicle suffered disabling damage and had to be towed out of the building and from the scene. The damage to the building was estimated to be greater than $15,000.
No criminal charges are being pursued by the police department.

Sunday July 2, 2023
Officer Troy Stanwood responded to a noise complaint at a local business and warned two people who agreed to be quiet.
Officer Liam Harrington took a report of an intoxicated person in the lobby of a hotel.
Officer Stanwood conducted a wellbeing check and found the person to be in a normal condition.
Officer Stanwood gave two people a ride back to their residence.
The police department received some information from a concerned citizen.
Someone turned in a found Florida driver’s license to the police department.
Officer Jerrod Hardy assisted a victim of fraud and explained to them ways to remediate the issue.
A piece of found property was turned in to the police department and the owner came and retrieved it.
David Shaw, 69, of Litchfield, Connecticut, was driving a 2003 Mercedes west on Norway Drive when Shaw allegedly crossed the centerline, left the roadway to the left, and struck a tree. There was minor personal injury and severe front-end damage to the vehicle. Shaw was evaluated by EMS personnel at the scene and was not transported to the hospital.
William Wright, no age given, of Maine, was driving a 2016 Dodge Ram east on the Pine Heath Road when he allegedly struck a 2013 Land Rover that was parked on the side of the road and operated by Kathleen Stevens-Rosa, no age given, of Maine. There was no personal injury reported and moderate damage to the vehicles. Their towns were not in the police report.
Brendan Boyle, 47, of Naples, Florida, was backing his 2011 Aston Martin DBS out of a parking spot on Cottage Street when he allegedly backed into the 2023 Nissan, operated by Mahlet Garedew-Ballard, 37, of Franklin Park, New Jersey, that was parked behind him. There was no personal injury and minor damage to both vehicles. Boyle was arrested for alleged operating under the influence.
A dog that was running loose was brought to the police department. The owner was located and reunited with the dog.
Officer Harrington handled a reported parking problem.
Officer Harrington assisted a motorist with a dead car battery.
Officer Stanwood attempted to serve a subpoena to a business.

Officer Ted Cake investigated and documented a report of damage to a vehicle that was parked on private property.
Bruce Peters, 73, of Bar Harbor, was attempting to park his 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander on Main Street when he allegedly struck a previously parked 2012 Honda CRV last operated by Anthony Serpico, 56, of Seaford, NY. There was no reported personal injury and both vehicles suffered minor damage.
Officer Nathan Formby took a complaint of a dog running loose, but was unable to locate the dog.
The police department received a motor vehicle complaint but no officers were available to respond. When an officer became available, they were able to follow up with the registered owner who allegedly admitted to the offensive driving behavior and was warned for their driving.
A Minnesota woman turned a found cellphone in to the police department.
An officer responded to School Street for a noise complaint. Upon investigation, the complaint was deemed unfounded.
Officer Harrington assisted a motorist by jumpstarting their vehicle which had a dead battery.
Officer Stanwood responded to a complaint of fireworks being shot off downtown. Officer Stanwood located the suspect group, advised them of the town’s ordinance against fireworks, and confiscated the remaining fireworks.
Pursuant to a traffic stop, Travis E. Sweeney, 27, of Davison, Michigan, was arrested for alleged operating under the influence.

Officer Stanwood took a report of possible underage drinking at a bar and is investigating the complaint.
Officer Harrington took a report of unpermitted fireworks being shot off.
Officer Formby gave someone a ride to their residence.
Debra Ireland, 66, of Ellsworth, was backing a 2023 Chevy Equinox out of a parking spot when it allegedly struck a 2023 GMC Acadia that was legally parked and owned by James Suer, 55, of Mason, Ohio. There was no personal injury and both vehicles suffered minor damage.
The police department received a report of trespassing. They will be providing extra patrols in the area.
Officer Elias Burne responded to a complaint of vandalism but discovered that the person was using chalk paint.
A found key was turned in to the police department.
A vehicle that was hindering the fourth of July operations at Agamont Park was towed from West Street.
Officer Kaleb Payson warned someone for a town ordinance violation.
Devansh Sethi, 27, of Boston, Massachusetts, was operating a 2023 Buick Envision and started to enter the intersection at the corner of Cottage Street and Eden Street when they allegedly hit a 2019 Ford Coach that was being operated by Thomas McAfee, 84, of Tremont, who was heading north on Eden Street. There were no personal injuries. The Buick had to be towed from the scene and the Ford was able to be driven away.
Officer Harrington gave someone a ride.
Found property was turned in to the police department and later reunited with its owner.
Officer Stanwood responded to a report of a possible child abduction. After investigation it was determined to be a miscommunication due to a language barrier and there was no abduction attempt made nor was the child was in danger.

Officers responded to a Main Street address for a report of five individuals on a rooftop consuming alcohol. The individuals were asked to get down from the rooftop.
Officer Stanwood took a report of suspicious activity which he deemed to be unfounded.
Sgt. Soren Sundberg took a report of suspicious behavior but could not locate anything suspicious.
A loose dog was brought to the police department and later reunited with its owner.
Sgt. Leigh Guildford responded to a report of a minor vehicle crash near the intersection of Highbrook Road and Eden Street but could not locate any such activity.
Sgt. Guildford investigated a dog bite complaint at MDI Hospital.
Someone reported to the police department that they had lost some property.
Officer Harrington took a motor vehicle complaint.
Officer Judson Cake conducted a wellbeing check on someone and as a result of his check, gave them a ride home.
Officer Stanwood responded to a report of suspicious activity at a business and asked one person to leave the premises.

Officer Stanwood responded to a report of a fight at a business. It was determined that no physical altercation had taken place but two people were warned for disorderly conduct.
Officer Harrington checked on an intoxicated person on Cottage Street.
Someone turned a found cellphone in to the police department and the cellphone’s owner later retrieved it.
Officers broke up a physical altercation outside of a bar but nobody was charged.
Officer J. Cake investigated a report of two trespassers in a hot tub at a hotel but discovered that they were, in fact, guests of the hotel. Officer Cake advised the individuals that they were not allowed to use the hot tub at the hour that they were using it which was approximately 2 a.m.
Officer Stanwood issued a civil citation to Destiny Guess-Machado, 19, of Trenton, Maine, for alleged illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor.
A person asked Officer J. Cake to escort them to a residence to retrieve some personal property. Given that it was 3 a.m., Officer Cake advised the person that it was not going to happen until daytime hours.
Officer Stanwood provided a ride to someone.
Officer J. Cake gave someone a ride to their residence.
Officer J. Cake found a lost debit card and placed it into the police department’s lost and found.
Officer T. Cake took a report of a dog running loose but was unable to locate the dog.
John Rodman, 71, of Rhode Island, was operating a 2014 Dodge Ram and was backing out of a driveway when he allegedly hit a 2018 Subaru, being operated by Alison Hudson, 36, of Bar Harbor, who was heading north on High Street. There was no personal injury and no damage to the Dodge Ram. The Subaru suffered moderate damage.
Officer T. Cake spoke to someone on the phone about an issue after the person had called to report some information.
Someone called the police department to report having lost some property.
Koyin Shih, 59, of Massachusetts, was attempting to make a lefthand turn from Ledgelawn Avenue onto Mount Desert Street while operating a 2007 Honda Minivan. As Shih started to pull out onto Mount Desert Street, they allegedly hit a 2009 Infiniti which was being operated by Robert Wright, 40, of Bar Harbor, and was headed east. There was no reported personal injury. The Honda suffered minor front end damage and the Infiniti suffered major damage to the passenger side.
Officer T. Cake is investigating a report by someone that they were threatened.
Someone turned in a drone that they had found in the woods to the police department.
Colin Brock, 68, of Corea, Maine, was operating a 2015 Ford van on Ledgelawn Avenue. Jacob W. Irish, 25, of North Carolina, was operating a 2017 Subaru Forester on Ledgelawn Avenue, heading in the opposite direction. When the two drivers passed each other, their driver’s side mirrors hit and got damaged. Allegedly, Brock did not stop, so Irish followed Brock until he stopped and then called the police. The accident resulted in non-reportable minor damage to the mirrors.
A Baltimore woman reported that her son had lost his wallet.
An officer performed a well-being check on a woman on Highbrook Road at the request of another person.
Lt. Kevin Edgecomb handled a report of a minor hit and run.
Officers conducted traffic control at the intersection of Route 3 and Route 102 due to a malfunctioning traffic light.
Daniele Apanaviciute, 43, of Baltimore, Maryland, was operating a 2019 Toyota Tacoma north on Route 3 when she slowed down for traffic. Lindo Taylor, 57, of Stratton Vermont, operating a 2012 Chevy Malibu, was traveling behind Apanaviciute and allegedly failed to maintain proper distance and allegedly struck the rear of the Tacoma. There were no personal injuries reported and at least one of the vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
A loose dog was brought to the police department and was later reunited with its owner.
Someone reported a theft.

Officer J. Cake received a motor vehicle complaint about a vehicle in Trenton heading towards Bar Harbor but was unable to locate the vehicle.
Officer Payson gave someone a ride downtown.
Someone turned in a found credit card to the police department.
Officer Chris Dickens spoke with a person regarding suspicious activity in the area of Compass Harbor Lane.
Officer Stanwood is investigating a liquor license violation.
Officer J. Cake arrested Maddox Wray, 21, of Ridgefield, Connecticut, for alleged operating under the influence and alleged driving to endanger. Wray was also summonsed for allegedly speeding of 27 mph over the posted speed limit.
Officer Bland warned someone for urinating in public and drinking in public.

Someone turned found property in to the police department and it was later retrieved by its owner.
A speed trailer was deployed on Route 3 after a complaint of speeding motorists in the area was made.
Someone turned in an ID that they had found on July 4.
The police department received a motor vehicle complaint and the registered owner was contacted and made aware of the complaint.
Officer Bland received a request to check the wellbeing of someone in Bar Harbor, but it was determined that the person was not in Bar Harbor.
Someone reported vandalism to the police department.
Officer Bland assisted the Ellsworth Police Department by attempting to locate someone in Bar Harbor.
Officer Stanwood responded to a complaint of erratic motor vehicle operation but was unable to locate the suspect vehicle.
Officers helped someone locate their vehicle.

The police department received a report of a lost male grey, black, and brown striped tiger cat.
Officer Bland gave someone a ride.
Officer Formby checked the well-being of someone in Bar Harbor who appeared to be in distress. The person was homesick and was on the phone with their family.
Officer J. Cake was unable to locate a vehicle that was the subject of a motor vehicle complaint.
A business reported some suspicious activity.
Officer Bland responded to a vandalism complaint on Park Street.
Following a traffic stop, Officer Caleb Mora arrested Loren Spurling, 32, no town given, for an arrest warrant and summonsed Spurling for alleged operation of a motor vehicle after habitual offender revocation. Spurling was transported to the Hancock County Jail.
Officer Mora attempted to perform a death notification at the request of another law enforcement agency but could not locate the recipient of the notification.
James Lessard, 37, of Waterville, Maine, was operating a 2020 Chevy pickup and was leaving a parking space in the Backyard parking lot. Allegedly, Lessard turned too sharply while leaving the parking space and struck a 2019 Mazda last operated by Nolan House, 62, of Clarendon Hills, Illinois. There was no personal injury and minor damage to both vehicles.
Officer Mora responded to a motor vehicle complaint but was unable to locate the suspect vehicle.
Someone reported losing some property.
Officer Harrington warned a man for drinking in public on the Village Green.

Officer Harrington responded to a complaint of a disorderly patron at the Cottage Street Pub.
Pursuant to a traffic stop, Officer Payson arrested Jaimie Rumney, 33, of Franklin, Maine, for alleged operating under the influence. Rumney was transported to the Hancock County Jail.
Officer Stanwood assisted the fire department with traffic control while they investigated a report of smoke.
Julia Todoli, no age given, of New York, was driving a 2020 Audi Q5 on Indian Point Road when they struck a deer in the roadway. There were no personal injuries and the vehicle damage was minimal.
A wallet that had been found on a beach was turned in to the police department. The owner was contacted and stated that they would pick it up later.
Brayden Boyle, 19, of Massachusetts, was operating a 2016 Cali CL Moped south on Main Street when he lost control and allegedly struck a 2020 Kia Telluride that was legally parked. No operator information for the Kia is given. Boyle had a minor injury to his arm and both vehicles suffered minor damage.
Someone turned a found bag in to the police department.
A found Bank of America debit card was turned in to the police department.
Officers responded to a report of an intoxicated male passed out on a bus. The male was removed from the bus and issued a trespass warning for the bus service.
A naked child was reported crossing the road towards the water in Salisbury Cove. Officer Mora located the child in the water and contacted the parents who had left the child in the care of a minor. The Department of Health and Human Services was also contacted.
Officer Formby handled a complaint of an animal bite.
