Shark Management Public Forums
Press releases
AUGUSTA—The Maine DMR will be holding two public forums to present ongoing shark research and discuss the public’s vision for the future of shark management in Maine.
Shark Research
As part of the Highly Migratory Species (HMS) Research, the DMR collects data on sharks in the Gulf of Maine. DMR biologist Matt Davis will be highlighting some of this research as well as other projects occurring in the Gulf of Maine. Information on DMR HMS Research can be found HERE.
Shark Management
Coastal sharks are managed by NOAA Fisheries, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC), and the State. In the past year, the topic of sharks in Maine waters has grown as a topic of interest. The DMR is interested in the public’s thoughts on the future of shark management in Maine. This may be regarding any aspect of shark management including: recreational fishing, commercial fishing, complimentary NOAA or ASMFC rules, or even public safety.
Public Meetings
There are two meetings in which you can participate. One meeting will be in-person only and the other will be in-person with a webinar option for those unable to travel to meetings locations. After a short presentation, DMR staff will be looking for public participation to discuss what you all see as Maine shark management moving forward.

For Maine Livestock and Poultry Producers and Processors
The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) is conducting a review of its meat and poultry licensing and inspection programs to identify ways to uphold the highest food safety standards while better supporting producers and processors across the state.
As part of this effort, DACF is inviting livestock and poultry producers and processors to share their experiences and ideas for improving how these programs operate. Your feedback will help DACF ensure that licensing and inspection processes effectively protect public health while being responsive to industry needs.
To gather this input, DACF has partnered with the University of Maine to conduct a confidential survey. Your responses will remain anonymous and will be used to develop recommendations for program improvements that reflect the perspectives of Maine’s agricultural community.
Share Your Experience
The survey should take approximately 10–15 minutes to complete. Survey period: Thursday, October 16, 2025 – Sunday, November 2, 2025.
Take the Survey
Your insights are essential in helping shape programs that work better for Maine’s livestock and poultry sector. Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective.
