Tammy DesJardin Promoted to Bar Harbor's Deputy Code Enforcement Position
BAR HARBOR—Former Planning and Code Enforcement Department administrative assistant Tammy DesJardin has been appointed to the deputy code enforcement officer position that was recently vacated by Mike Gurtler. Gurtler was appointed as the town’s code enforcement officer following the departure of long-time Code Enforcement Officer Angela Chamberlain.
DesJardin will have been employed by the town for six years this February and was sworn in as deputy code enforcement officer on January 2, the day after former CEO Chamberlain’s last day of employment.
“Tammy possesses a very good understanding of the position and continues to be a very important part of our team. She is thorough, thoughtful, and is particularly impressive in the way (she) supports residents and contractors. I’m excited to continue working with Tammy as she takes on this new role,” said Gurtler.
According to Gurtler, the code enforcement office is currently restructuring its position responsibilities in order to best utilize the talents and abilities of its staff. Code enforcement officers are required to participate in regular training. Tammy will complete her certification process this year and both officers will facilitate the adoption of the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code updates that go into effect in April.
“I’ve worked hard over the last six years to build a good communication with the public: striving for friendly and efficient customer service on all levels to property owners and real estate agents but especially the tradesmen and women,” DesJardin said. “Permitting in Bar Harbor is not always an easy task regardless of your skill level. So, knowing they are always welcome to call or stop in with questions, concerns, or just need a little help completing the forms I think will serve me well during the transition.”
Town Manager James Smith said, “Tammy has been an invaluable asset to the Code Enforcement Office. We are thrilled she accepted the position and are confident she will excel as deputy CEO.”
Smith explained that as a matter of process and procedure, department heads are responsible for the direct management and supervision of the staff within their department. The department heads work closely with administrative staff throughout the recruitment process, including advertisements, interviews, and candidate selection. Once a preferred candidate is identified, the department head, in this case Planning Director Michele Gagnon, consults with Smith to jointly review and finalize the selection.
“In this case, Tammy stood out as a highly qualified internal candidate,” said Smith.
DesJardin has nearly six years of experience as an administrativeaAssistant, with much of that time dedicated to supporting the code enforcement office.
According to Smith, DesJardin is deeply familiar with the permitting process and is well-respected by contractors and developers.
“DesJardin’s strong track record and commitment to the department made her an excellent choice for promotion,” Smith said.
Correction: Tammy DesJardin was sworn into her new position as deputy CEO the day after Chamberlain’s last day of employment, not on Chamberlain’s last day of employment.
