Our One and Only Ocean
The Summer Institute is COA’s week-long ideas festival that welcomes experts from around the world to share their perspectives on the most pressing issues of our time.
The 2022 Summer Institute: Our One and Only Ocean, held in collaboration with The National Geographic Society, will explore the beauty, promise, and perils of our greatest commonality—the ocean. We will dive into the complex and interwoven challenges facing our ocean while spotlighting solutions and leaders that offer us hope. Institute sessions will address climate change, deep sea exploration, fisheries and aquaculture, pollution and resource extraction, conservation, history, art, and inspiration.

Musician Carl Wockner
Australian export now based in Nashville, TN - Carl Wockner was recently awarded “Musician of the Year” by the LiveWire Prestige Awards, Global winner of the IAMA (International Acoustic Music Awards USA) and Finalist Nominee for the Independent Music Awards USA. Featured in multiple TV and Film appearances and boasts a fast growing YouTube Channel, Carl Wockner is becoming known as one of the worlds most engaging and talented solo performers.
His signature vocals and guitar flavor matched with his off-the-cuff live looping agility combined with award winning songwriting really submerge the listener into a musical experience unique to each individual performance.

Artists will have a few quick warm-up poses then be able to spend time refining a long pose. Registration necessary- ArtWaves maintains distances for safety.
The model is the star, no instruction, but plenty of easels, boards, horses, paper, charcoal and fellow friendly artists. Feel free to bring your paints and brushes as well!

Elements of a Graphic Novel - Summer Series

Gabrielle is a young illustrator and multimedia artist. She grew up on a small island in Maine, and consistently finds her art influenced by her upbringing. She worked for the Illustration Institute based out of Portland Maine in 2020 producing a short documentary series about how drawing influences thinking. Gabrielle is currently enrolled at College of the Atlantic and is on course to graduate with a study in visual narratives. When she’s not drawing or crafting you can find her planning her next cross-country bike tour.

CREATING A PET PORTRAIT with Gloria Avner
If you’ve ever wanted a beautiful portrait of your favorite fur baby (or bird or horse or snake), you have two choices: Pay a professional artist or have an energizing learning experience and do it yourself! Pet Portrait Artist - Gloria Avner will give you step-by-step guidance, working with soft pastels, pastel pencils, and velour paper.
You’ll go home with a matted PORTRAIT OF YOUR PET, ready for an 11” x 14” or 16” x 20” frame and increased self-esteem in your drawing abilities! All materials will be provided. BATIK PAINTING: ANCIENT ART/ NEW TWIST
Come learn the ancient art of Batik Painting with Master Batik Teacher Gloria Avner! Using wax as a resist, you will create layers of brilliantly graduated color and experience effects not possible with other painting techniques. Learn to use ink, wax and watercolor on delicate Japanese rice paper. You will be guided step-by-step through the creation of beautiful artwork.
Teens/Adults of all skill levels. The class is equally effective for beginners, professional artists and those taking the course multiple times. You don’t need to bring anything. All is provided, including a great array of subject matter (though you can bring a specific picture if there is something you’d really like to paint).

Needle Felted Teacup Village with Kristen M. Walsh
In this fun, fast paced, yet beginner-friendly class you’ll learn basic needle felting techniques that will open the door of this amazing art/craft form! Wool can be twisted, rolled and folded in specific ways (and then needled, of course) to create every shape imaginable.
At the end of this workshop, not only will you have a good foundation for further needle felting, but you will also have a wonderful one-of-a-kind piece of art!

Acadia Dance Festival 2022
Nimbus Dance and the Acadia Dance Festival triumphantly return to the 1932 Criterion Theatre with a remarkable program of dance set to music by Philip Glass, Arturo Márquez, and a first-ever showing of Artistic Director Samuel Pott’s new staging of Aaron Copland’s iconic score: Appalachian Spring.
The performances also feature Boston-based Luminarium Dance and talented performers from the Acadia Dance Festival Intensive, Camp Beech Cliff and the Summer Festival of the Arts.

SPCA of Hancock County's Wine & Whiskers
Please join the SPCA of Hancock County on Tuesday, July 26th for a wonderful evening celebrating the Animals with delicious food, live music, and both live and silent auctions. This year’s festivities will be hosted at the beautiful Bar Harbor Club, with an outdoor terrace overlooking Bar Harbor Bay.
The evening will feature an Awards Ceremony, fine dining, a cash bar, and the company of like-minded animal enthusiasts. Mingle and socialize with fellow champions of local Animal Welfare and help us to strengthen Hancock County during these critical times!
