Things to Do and Story Round Up
It’s our weekly roundup of future events and past stories. Week of August 15
Every Monday, we’ll have a quick preview of events happening that week in Bar Harbor and you can look for in-depth features later on in the week.
And if you’d like something listed, just let us know by commenting or contacting us!
GET YOUR NEWS ON!

Get Your Nature On!
Birds, Bugs, Birches, and Barnacles!
Do you love exploring nature, observing the details, and learning more about the world around you? Then our BioBlitz is just for you. It’s an Acadia National Park treasure hunt for science, and we need your help! We will work in small groups, each with a staff guide, to observe what is around us – from birds to bugs and birches to barnacles. We will work together to record as many species as possible using iNaturalist, a free app that makes it easy to share observations of biodiversity. After the morning’s field effort, all registered participants are invited to a celebratory picnic on campus. We’ll share our sightings from the day while we talk about more ways to stay connected and how to continue contributing to the efforts of monitoring biodiversity in Acadia National Park. Join us for this great opportunity to play, learn, and connect with nature, science, and your community. No prior experience is necessary.

Author Talk: "American Birding Association Field Guide to Birds of Maine" by Nicholas Lund
From deep evergreen woods and interior lakes, fields and farmlands, to world famous beaches and rocky shorelines, Maine is a paradise for birds. Over 450 species are recorded in the state and because it’s ideal for both migrating birds in the fall and spring as well as year-long residents, birders can see a multitude of species in every season. Maine has many sanctuaries, wildlife preserves, and local parks and both the spectacular Baxter State Park and the staggeringly beautiful Acadia State Park on Mt. Desert Island. All of these factors combine to make Maine a premiere state for both birds and birders.

Virtual Write On! Writing Group
Want support for your craft? The Write On! writer's group has been meeting at the Jesup since 2014, and remotely during the pandemic. Each meeting, members may bring in up to 1200 words to read for feedback, and in turn offer feedback to others. Although each member doesn't get to read work every time, the group shares the time fairly. The group meets on Zoom, and hold in confidence what is shared. This group welcomes adults 18 and up writing in many genres. There's no homework--the only commitment is two hours on Saturday mornings.
