Things to Do and Story Round Up October 8
What adventures will you have this week in Bar Harbor?
I’m just one person and very imperfect, so some weeks there will be more news than others as I try to fit things around my editing novels, podcasting, and writing my own books and actually making a living, but here you go!
Here are the links to our stories from the past week in case you missed any.
Become a Stronger Family!
BE A HERO!
To check if Bar Harbor Fire Department is currently hiring, please go to the town's jobs page.
But even if it isn’t you can become a call member
Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

The digital event will feature a keynote by the Wabanaki Studies Law author and sponsor, Hon. Donna Loring, a citizen of the Penobscot Nation and former representative of that nation to the Maine House of Representatives. Followed by a panel discussion featuring report co-authors Abbe Museum, ACLU of Maine, the Maine Indian Tribal-State Commission, and Wabanaki Alliance.

The Ghosts of La Rochelle – Saturday, October 29, 2022
For the first time, The Bar Harbor Historical Society and the Bar Harbor Ghost Tours are partnering to present The Ghosts of La Rochelle! Come join us for this free, fun Halloween event for adults and children at La Rochelle (127 West Street in Bar Harbor) on Saturday, October 29th from 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.. Also, we understand how busy the community is during the summer season, so to show our appreciation, museum admission will be free for all guests!
Professional storytellers will tell tales in the shadows and dark corners of the La Rochelle mansion– does George B. Dorr appear to reclaim his favorite umbrella? Does the parlor organ play itself in the library? Who haunts the hidden chamber on the third floor? All these spooky questions and more will be answered!
Get in the spirit and wear a costume if you wish! Halloween treats–not tricks–will be offered at the end of your visit!

Author Meghan Gilliss "Lungfish"
Tuck is a woman whose husband's addiction has drained their finances and driven them to move illegally to an abandoned island off the coast of Maine. There, she must care for their young daughter and scrape together enough money to leave before winter arrives—or before they are found out—while her husband struggles to detox.
Tuck finds herself at the mercy of what the island has to offer for sustenance and answers (little green crabs, bladderwrack, rosehip tea; notes scrawled out by her grandmother, smells held by the damp walls of the house, a failed invention left behind by her missing father)—living moment-by-moment through the absurdity, beauty, paranoia, and hunger that shoots through her life.
With exquisite prose that is displacing and even transformative, Lungfish explores the wild, unknown spaces of what makes a family, and the darkness that must be grappled through to find a way out. Meghan Gilliss’ debut is a brilliant and heartbreaking novel about addiction, doubt, marriage, motherhood, and the ground that is ever-shifting beneath our feet.
Gillis attended the Bennington Writing Seminars and is a fellow of the Hewnoaks Artist Residency. She has worked as a journalist, a bookseller, a librarian, and a hospital worker, and lives in Portland, Maine. Lungfish is her first novel.

Bar Harbor Book Signing with Michele Kriegman
Kriegman's books focus on adoptions reunions, and her "Finding Faith" investigates adopted children and their fathers finding each other: "Each year thousands of men father children later placed for adoption or donor-conception. Some of them thought they would forget. Some claim they never knew. There are several million of these secret fathers in the United States alone – in The Birth-Fathers’ Club Series eight of them are about to get a knock on the door – as changing times catch up with them and with adoptive parents, recipient parents, anonymous donors, and the rest of our beloved ancestors."
