Things to Do and Story Round Up October 17
What adventures will you have this week in Bar Harbor?
I’m just one person and very imperfect, so some weeks there will be more news than others as I try to fit things around my editing novels, podcasting, and writing my own books and actually making a living, but here you go!
Here are the links to our stories from the past week in case you missed any.
THE HAPPENINGS!
BE A HERO!
To check if Bar Harbor Fire Department is currently hiring, please go to the town's jobs page.
But even if it isn’t you can become a call member
Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

The Ghosts of La Rochelle – Saturday, October 29, 2022
For the first time, The Bar Harbor Historical Society and the Bar Harbor Ghost Tours are partnering to present The Ghosts of La Rochelle! Come join us for this free, fun Halloween event for adults and children at La Rochelle (127 West Street in Bar Harbor) on Saturday, October 29th from 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.. Also, we understand how busy the community is during the summer season, so to show our appreciation, museum admission will be free for all guests!
Professional storytellers will tell tales in the shadows and dark corners of the La Rochelle mansion– does George B. Dorr appear to reclaim his favorite umbrella? Does the parlor organ play itself in the library? Who haunts the hidden chamber on the third floor? All these spooky questions and more will be answered!
Get in the spirit and wear a costume if you wish! Halloween treats–not tricks–will be offered at the end of your visit!

The Fire of 47
In remembrance of the devastating Fire of 1947, The Bar Harbor Historical Society (BHHS) and The Criterion Theater are collaborating on a special showing of “The Fire of '47.” The fire, which marks its 75th anniversary this year, tore through over 17,000 acres on Mount Desert Island, destroying land, homes, and businesses in its wake. Join them on October 21st at 7:00pm to watch and learn more about the devastation of the inferno, through the stories of those who were there. After the movie, a Q&A will be led by local historian Debbie Dyer. In the lobby will be a special exhibit with fire artifacts from the BHHS's La Rochelle Mansion and Museum. Swan’s Islander shares how he found a Wooly Mammoth in Maine
Swan’s Island artist and author Gary Hoyle shares the story of his search for the truth about a mysterious tusk with two conflicting histories – one ancient, and one modern – at the Bass Harbor Memorial Library on Wednesday, Oct. 19 beginning at 6 p.m. It’s a search that led him to direct the first excavation of a wooly mammoth in Maine, and to uncover historical facts about an elephant that inspired P. T. Barnum. It’s a tale he recounts in his new book, “Mystery Tusk: Searching for Elephants in the Maine Woods.” Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the library that evening. “From a Smarter Planet to a Wiser Earth: A Quaker Philosopher’s Experiments in Moving Out of the Ivory Tower”
Speaker: College of the Atlantic Professor Gray Cox
How can we ask philosophical questions and talk meaningfully about them in ways that connect with our everyday lives, the problems our communities face, and the big challenges that threaten the future of our grandchildren and the legacies we will leave? Gray will provide some examples from his own work and others’ to illustrate approaches to this. He will look at ways we deal with conflict, economics, ecology, and the growing role of artificial intelligence in our world. The talk will be followed by an opportunity for dialogue on Friday evening. Also, on Saturday morning he will provide a follow up session to further discuss themes raised in the talk as well as to explore the methods of communal discernment and “spirit-led” research that he and other members of the Quaker Institute for the Future have been experimenting with for 20 years.

8 Week Carving Class: Kestrel - Afternoon Session
In this class, conducted online via Zoom, students will be carving a life-size American kestrel in basswood under the guidance of carver-in-residence Steve Valleau. Cornell’s All About Birds describes kestrels as gracefully buoyant in flight, and small enough to get tossed around in the wind. They occupy habitats ranging from deserts and grasslands to alpine meadows, and are most likely to be seen when they are perching on utility wires along roadsides, in open country with short vegetation and few trees.
Students will receive blanks that have been roughed out; all the materials needed for this carving, except a mount, will be provided.
Steve recommends students start by thinking about how they want the bird mounted, then collect images (Google images, nature magazines) to help visualize the project.
To ensure your materials reach you by the class start date, please sign up by Oct. 8.
