It’s our weekly round-up and I may have missed some things so apologies!
I’m just one person and very imperfect, so some weeks there will be more news than others as I try to fit things around my editing novels, podcasting, and writing my own books and actually making a living, but here you go!
Here are the links to our stories from last week. Apologies for the big list. There were quite a few of them.
GET YOUR HERO ON!
To check if Bar Harbor Fire Department is currently hiring, please go to the town's jobs page.
But even if it isn’t, you can become a call member
Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

The Summit Project - 3rd Annual Online Auction (WEEK 1)
The Summit Project tries to answer one question: How can we as a community of Mainers come together and ensure that our state’s post 9/11 fallen heroes are NOT forgotten?
Since Memorial Day 2013, The Summit Project has collected biographical stories and tribute stones that uniquely represent our fallen, and we have invited members of our community to carry them on tribute treks across Maine and all over the world. In just nine years, the lives of Maine heroes have been honored on Katahdin, Kilimanjaro, Everest, Iceland, Cadillac, Denali and have been carried through parades, marathons and marches across Maine and the USA.
Thousands of participants have come together to honor our heroes through action. In short, The Summit Project is a proven living memorial and helps us fulfill our duty as Maine citizens.
Run completely by volunteers, every fundraising dollar returns in full to directly improve the program. After nine strong years and a lot of hard work, TSP is setting the standard for honoring and remembering our heroes from Maine.
Our goal for this year is $10,000. Reaching this goal would: Allow more Gold Star families to attend each of our hosted events; broaden the outreach to our target audience; help improve the Honor Room at Portland MEPS where our heroes’ stones are displayed; maintain the Honor Case and other critical assets of the organization; provide for the ongoing operational needs of our program; contribute toward the purchase of a new trailer to assist with transporting our stones and stories across all 16 counties of Maine.

Former Maine Poet Laureate Explores Creativity at Gilley Museum
SOUTHWEST HARBOR — The Wendell Gilley Museum welcomes former Maine Poet Laureate Stuart Kestenbaum as the museum’s November People-Nature-Art guest, on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7pm for an online-only program. It is free and open to all. Sign up at www.wendellgilleymuseum.org
Kestenbaum is the author of six collections of poems; a book of brief essays on craft and community called “The View from Here;” he compiled and edited “Visualizing Nature,” a set of deeply personal essays on nature, ecology, sustainability, climate change, and philosophy by a wide range of contributors that honor nature's power to heal, inspire, guide, amaze, and strengthen.
He has written and spoken widely on craft making and creativity, and his poems and writing have appeared in small press publications and magazines. He served as Maine’s poet laureate from 2016-2021 and hosted “Poems from Here” on Maine Public Radio, and was the host/curator of the podcasts Make/Time and Voices of the Future.
He was the director of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine for over twenty-five years, and was elected an honorary fellow of the American Craft Council in 2006. More recently, working with the Libra Foundation, he has designed and implemented a residency program for artists and writers called Monson Arts.

Councilors will hear an update on the Comprehensive Plan. Finance Director Sarah Gilbert will give a report on the first four months of fiscal year 2023.
William Herrmann has applied for a new taxi license (Acadian Cab). There could be a motion “to maintain the maximum annual payouts under the Town’s Health Reimbursement Plan and to establish the maximum annual payouts under the Wage Stipend program as specified in the memo of November 9, 2022 from Betsy Spear.”
The council could also tweak the town’s personnel rules.
According to Sutherland,
“With last month’s approval to move forward with Consolidated Communications (CCI) to provide the Fiber Network for town facilities, we’ve also partnered with them to assist the Town in applying for grant monies to further build out Fidium (Fiber to the home) to the under/unserved parts of Bar Harbor.
“The first step in this process is to develop a town wide comprehensive report of where the needs are and to map the information so that we have a competitive application in the grant process.” - Manager’s Memo - Town Council Meeting of November 15, 2022 Page 3
They’ve received a bid from Brian Lippold of Casco Bay Advisors and the council could authorize Sutherland “to sign the contract with Casco Bay Advisors utilizing up to $15,000 of American Rescue Plan Act funds as permitted by Federal law.”
