Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

The Summit Project - 3rd Annual Online Auction (WEEK 1)
The Summit Project tries to answer one question: How can we as a community of Mainers come together and ensure that our state’s post 9/11 fallen heroes are NOT forgotten?
Since Memorial Day 2013, The Summit Project has collected biographical stories and tribute stones that uniquely represent our fallen, and we have invited members of our community to carry them on tribute treks across Maine and all over the world. In just nine years, the lives of Maine heroes have been honored on Katahdin, Kilimanjaro, Everest, Iceland, Cadillac, Denali and have been carried through parades, marathons and marches across Maine and the USA.
Thousands of participants have come together to honor our heroes through action. In short, The Summit Project is a proven living memorial and helps us fulfill our duty as Maine citizens.
Run completely by volunteers, every fundraising dollar returns in full to directly improve the program. After nine strong years and a lot of hard work, TSP is setting the standard for honoring and remembering our heroes from Maine.
Our goal for this year is $10,000. Reaching this goal would: Allow more Gold Star families to attend each of our hosted events; broaden the outreach to our target audience; help improve the Honor Room at Portland MEPS where our heroes’ stones are displayed; maintain the Honor Case and other critical assets of the organization; provide for the ongoing operational needs of our program; contribute toward the purchase of a new trailer to assist with transporting our stones and stories across all 16 counties of Maine.

VIRTUAL WRITE ON! WRITING GROUP
Want support for your craft? The Write On! writer’s group has been meeting at the Jesup since 2014, and remotely during the pandemic. Each meeting, members may bring in up to 1200 words to read for feedback, and in turn offer feedback to others. Although each member doesn’t get to read work every time, the group shares the time fairly. The group meets on Zoom, and hold in confidence what is shared. This group welcomes adults 18 and up writing in many genres. There’s no homework–the only commitment is two hours on Saturday mornings.

Tuck is a woman whose husband's addiction has drained their finances and driven them to move illegally to an abandoned island off the coast of Maine. There, she must care for their young daughter and scrape together enough money to leave before winter arrives—or before they are found out—while her husband struggles to detox.
Tuck finds herself at the mercy of what the island has to offer for sustenance and answers (little green crabs, bladderwrack, rosehip tea; notes scrawled out by her grandmother, smells held by the damp walls of the house, a failed invention left behind by her missing father)—living moment-by-moment through the absurdity, beauty, paranoia, and hunger that shoots through her life.
With exquisite prose that is displacing and even transformative, Lungfish explores the wild, unknown spaces of what makes a family, and the darkness that must be grappled through to find a way out. Meghan Gilliss’ debut is a brilliant and heartbreaking novel about addiction, doubt, marriage, motherhood, and the ground that is ever-shifting beneath our feet.
Gillis attended the Bennington Writing Seminars and is a fellow of the Hewnoaks Artist Residency. She has worked as a journalist, a bookseller, a librarian, and a hospital worker, and lives in Portland, Maine. Lungfish is her first novel.

QWANQWA
Ethiopian supergroup QWANQWA brings their supercharged sound to College of the Atlantic’s Gates Community Center on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 for the general public, free for COA students.
QWANQWA is a supergroup of musicians from the baddest ensembles of Addis Ababa. Brought together by a shared passion for the power of Ethiopian music, this group shines an experimentalism based in the virtuosity of rooted traditions.
With swirling masinko (one-stringed fiddle), wah-wah-violin, bass krar boom, and the unstoppable rhythm of heavy kebero (goat-skin drum) beats, powerful traditional lead African diva vocals, QWANQWA keeps the people wrapped in celebratory attention. After making a splash at world renowned festivals Roskilde and WOMEX, and after three European tours under their belt, this world traveling ensemble is hitting the road for a MacArthur Foundation-backed debut U.S. tour in 2022.

KIDS CRAFTERNOONS

Class with Master Printmaker at Wendell Gilley Museum
Printmaker Sherrie York returns to the Wendell Gilley Museum on Saturday, Nov. 5, to teach a full-day workshop using multiple colors. The class is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Class size is limited and registration is required.
Materials will be provided – just bring an idea for an image you’d like to turn into a woodblock-style print. Participants must be at least 10 years old. The cost is $70 per person for nonmembers and $56 for members. Register at www.wendellgilleymuseum.org.
Sherrie’s art is currently on display in the Gilley’s Special Exhibit Room in an exhibit called “Moments & Reflections” and will be on display through Dec. 17.

It’s a dance party, no experience needed!
Come take care of yourself, shake, smile & sweat! Every class is different; the music, people and weather, and we always have a blast! Erin leads a workout that caters to all levels of fitness and ability. All you need is a love for music and movement (or come to class to fall in love with dancing), but no experience necessary. You can follow along and give it your own flair! Come join our classes throughout the week, in the gorgeous dance studio at ArtWaves! Downeast Community Dance meets every Sunday from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Moore Community Center in Ellsworth (first and third) and ArtWaves in Town Hill (second, fourth and fifth).

Mount Desert Village Community Planning Workshop
The Town of Mount Desert invites residents, business owners, and those who work in Otter Creek, Seal Harbor, and Somesville to participate in village planning community meetings. These meetings are the first in a series of village planning meetings for villages in the Town of Mount Desert taking place this fall in preparation for a Town of Mount Desert comprehensive plan update. Attendees will participate in a facilitated discussion of zoning, land use, housing, transportation, open space, and place-making in the villages. The meetings will be led by The Musson Group, a land use planning and economic development firm located on Mount Desert Island.
