YMCA POOL OPEN AGAIN!
BRIEFS: Hazardous Waste Date Set, MDI Varsity Girls Win Ellsworth Invitational, Lynam Grants, Craft Fairs, Author Talks and More. . .
Once or twice a week, we compile short news clips and briefs. Most of these are sent into us by organizations or people who want to share news with you.
We’re happy to do this (and hope you’re happy to read them) because it’s really a major part of what we’re about: getting information out to people for free. If you have something you’d like to share, please let us know.
The Bar Harbor Story is generously sponsored by First National Bank.
BAR HARBOR—In a happy letter to the MDI YMCA community, MDI YMCA Chief Executive Officer Ann Tikkanen announced that the Mount Desert Island YMCA’s Lenny DeMuro swimming pool is reopening on Monday at 6:00 AM.
The opening comes after a planned closure that Tikkanen said is “to completely replace and modernize the pool water filtration system, ensuring a clean, safe, and healthy environment for everyone.”
The rest of the letter reads,
“Lap swimmers, aqua exercisers, and not one but two swim teams will all be delighted with the water and air quality of the new Paddock regenerator pool filter system. New lap lines and the team’s scrubbing of the deck (and rough spots!) are making our pool water sparkle!
“During this calendar year, with support from many, our community Y has made a $300,000 investment in the natatorium wing including both the pool filter replacement and a new roof (for which this new construction will allow for solar panels).
“On behalf of the MDI Y’s boards and staff, we are thrilled to welcome our members back to the pool, and we look forward to providing many, many more swim lessons, exercise, and fun for children, adults, and the working families of Mount Desert Island.
“See you at the Y, Monday morning at 6:00 AM!
“Ann”

Tyler Schiff Author Talk
Wednesday, September 18 at 5:30 p.m. in person
On Wednesday September 18 at 5:30 p.m., the Northeast Harbor Library will host author Tyler Schiff for a talk about her new collection of crime stories, Diary of a Prosecutor on the Run.
Diary of a Prosecutor on the Run introduces us to regular men and women in law enforcement who have been battered by life but manage to retain their dignity: a forensic artist, a public attorney, a financial regulator, current and former FBI agents, and a U.S. Marshal and prison guard, among others. This darkly comic vision begins with a psychological thriller. A prosecutor goes on the run after she brings a powerful CEO to trial. By turns strange and familiar, Diary of a Prosecutor on the Run is a tale that provokes and surprises.
Schiff was born in Boston and worked as a managing director on the Goldman Sachs trading desk before devoting herself full-time to writing. She worked as a TV writer on Beacon 23 (MGM+) and sold original material to WB. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and four children, and spends summers on MDI.
For more information or to register, visit the library’s website at nehlibrary.org. This event will be held in person. Registration is recommended. This event is free and open to the public. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing.

Martha Tod Dudman’s Sunrise and the Real World
Southwest Harbor: On Tuesday, September 17 at 5:30 p.m., the Southwest Harbor Public Library welcomes Martha Tod Dudman for a reading and discussion of her new locally-based thriller, Sunrise and the Real World. A captivating coming-of-age story that explores temptation, morality, and mental health, Sunrise features a recent college graduate who works at a residential treatment center for troubled teens. She quickly finds herself absorbed into a landscape of angry and abused teenagers, illicit romance, and danger. Years later, she’s forced to confront the person she was, the choices she made, and the bitter ghosts that haunt her. “Dudman’s searing honesty speaks eloquently to our most fragile selves, whether wounded child or frantic parent, in a stunner book.”- People Magazine.
Martha Tod Dudman is the author of Dawn (Puckerbrush Press, 1989), Augusta, Gone (Simon & Schuster, 2001), Expecting to Fly (Simon & Schuster, 2004), and Black Olives (Simon & Schuster, 2008). Augusta, Gone was adapted as an award-winning Lifetime production. Born in St. Louis, Missouri and raised in Washington, D.C, Dudman went to Antioch College and moved to Maine in 1975, first to Little Cranberry Island, then to Northeast Harbor. Dudman serves as a selectman for the town of Mount Desert and on a variety of non-profit and community boards. Books will be available for purchase and to be signed by the author.

"Unlocking Archives: Expert Tips to Transform Historical Records into Engaging Presentations and Publications"
ELLSWORTH—Expert archivist Holly Hendricks, Ellsworth Historical Society Collections Specialist, reveals how to turn archives into presentations and publications. She recently created two presentations using just a few written records, but expanded our understanding of them with a variety of other obtainable private records in the EHS archives and from the public records.
Hendricks successfully took Alice Mullan's three diaries of her life in WWI Ellsworth, and expanded them into a rich narrative, setting the social and cultural stage of the Ellsworth she lived in, and creating a word picture of her life and social activities as a young woman embarking on her career. In another project, and using the letters from Sidney Stockbridge, a civilian Ellsworth man wrote to his mother from the front lines of the Civil War, Hendricks created a social and political context for his letters which opened a window to understand the war-time life he was living and by extension, war-time life at the battlegrounds of the Civil War.
Archivists are organized, however it takes another level of organization to find and index supporting documents to most fully tell the stories of any collection of archived materials. Ms. Hendricks excels at this higher level of organization, and this is what she will teach in the Monday, September 16 program, at the Ellsworth Library Riverview Room at 7:00 p.m. Professional archivists will gain useful techniques, as will family historians, genealogists, and others interested in how to organize the historic materials they are safeguarding and wishing to make relevant and interesting to next generations.
