"Unlocking Archives: Expert Tips to Transform Historical Records into Engaging Presentations and Publications"ย ย
ELLSWORTHโExpert archivist Holly Hendricks, Ellsworth Historical Society Collections Specialist, reveals how to turn archives into presentations and publications.ย She recently created two presentations using just a few written records, but expanded our understanding of them with a variety of other obtainable private records in the EHS archives and from the public records.ย
Hendricks successfully took Alice Mullan's three diaries of her life in WWI Ellsworth, and expandedย them into a rich narrative, setting the social and cultural stage of the Ellsworth she lived in, and creating a word picture of her life and social activities as a young woman embarking on her career.ย In another project, and using the letters from Sidney Stockbridge, a civilian Ellsworth man wrote to his mother from the front lines of the Civil War, Hendricks created a social and political context for his letters which opened a window to understand the war-time life he was living and by extension, war-time life at the battlegrounds of the Civil War.
Archivists are organized, however it takes another level of organization to find and index supporting documents to most fully tell the stories of any collection of archived materials.ย Ms. Hendricks excels at this higher level of organization,ย and this is what she will teachย in the Monoday, September 16th program, at the Ellsworth Library Riverview Room at 7:00pm.ย Professional archivists will gain useful techniques, as will family historians, genealogists, and others interested in how to organize the historic materials they are safeguarding and wishing to make relevant and interesting to next generations.

SOUTHWEST HARBORโOn Tuesday, September 17 at 5:30, the Southwest Harbor Public Library welcomes Martha Tod Dudman for a reading and discussion of her new locally-based thriller, โSunrise and the Real Worldโ. Artist, Transgender Activist Edie Fake Discusses Work
BAR HARBOR โ Fall 2024 College of the Atlantic Kippy Stroud Artist-in-Residence Edie Fake discusses his work at COA, Sept. 17. The free public lecture begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Thomas S. Gates, Jr. Community Center.
Fake, an artist, illustrator, author, and transgender activist, will be wrapping up a month-long residency that he began at COA in mid-August. The Kippy Stroud residency is meant to give artists opportunities to generate creative thought and rejuvenate their minds so they can work on future productions.ย
Fake is an artist who respects contemplative engagement in his process. He creates complex murals that reveal an architectural substructure of wonder, unveiling the hidden legacies of community-building by those who live on the margins of normative society. The maker of wryly humorous printed matter and bejeweled paintings with hues that bring both intricate beauty and socially transgressive ornamentation into the world, Fake is someone whose work adds depth to the cultural ecosphere.
The college is thrilled to have this opportunity for Fake to spend time on campus and to present to the public, said COA art professor Catherine Clinger.ย
Fake is the fourth fall Kippy Stroud Artist-in-Residence. Former recipients include Mary Reid Kelly and Patrick Kelly (2019), Okwui Okpokwasili and Peter Born (2021), and Heather Lyon (2022). Fakeโs residency will complete the first cycle of COAโs expanded Kippy Stroud artist program, which started with Pamela โPoseyโ Moulton, chosen as the Kippy Stroud Emerging Visiting Maine Artist for winter 2024, and continued with a spring 2024 lecture by Serubiri Moses.
The Kippy Stroud artist program is sponsored by the Marion Boulton Kippy Stroud Foundation.

Tyler Schiff Author Talk โ Wednesday, September 18thย at 5:30 pm in personย
On Wednesday September 18thย at 5:30pm, the Northeast Harbor Library will host author Tyler Schiff for a talk about her new collection of crime stories,ย Diary of a Prosecutor on the Run.
Diary of a Prosecutor on the Runย introduces us to regular men and women in law enforcement who have been battered by life but manage to retain their dignity: a forensic artist, a public attorney, a financial regulator, current and former FBI agents, and a U.S. Marshal and prison guard, among others. This darkly comic vision begins with a psychological thriller. A prosecutor goes on the run after she brings a powerful CEO to trial. By turns strange and familiar,ย Diary of a Prosecutorย on the Runย isย a tale that provokes and surprises.
Schiff was born in Boston and worked as a managing director on the Goldman Sachs trading desk before devoting herself full-time to writing. She worked as a TV writer on Beacon 23 (MGM+) and sold original material to WB. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and four children, and spends summers on MDI.

SOUTHWEST HARBORโFrom Karen McFarlandโs โOh Buoy!โ to Mary Haysโ โThe Coveโ the hooked rugs on display at the Southwest Harbor Public Library will delight with color and variety from September 3 through 28th. Members of Hook โn I, Mount Desert Islandโs rug hooking group, have created original designs while also working from traditional and modern hooking patterns. The Hook โn I group was formed more than 15 years ago, and the group meets weekly from September to May at the library. The first meeting of this season will be on Thursday, September 12th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Exhibitors in September will include Judith Burger-Gossart, Sugar Fenton, Patsy Fogarty, Bianka Fuksman, Mary Hays, Cookie Horner, Rosemary Levin, Karen McFarland, Betsy Patterson, Jan Reed, Liz Rosenfeld, Nancy Turner, Nancy Weingarten, Sandy Wilcox, and more.

We also welcome knitters, needlepointers, and those who practice other fiber arts.

ย
BAR HARBORโJoin us on Friday, September 20th 12:00 -1:30 pm at the Bar Harbor Oceanarium for a brown bag lunch and tour of the sea level rise trail during the king tide.
King tides are the predicted highest high tide and lowest low tide of the year. They are important because they show us what rising seas will look like on the landscape. Friday, September 20, just after noon MDI will experience a king tide, and we invite you to explore the Oceanarium with us to learn more.
Many people have questions about whether the January 2024 storms were an anomaly or a sign of what's to come. When we hear "one foot of sea level rise", what does that look like on our coastline? Join Raney Bench from the MDI Historical Society, Jeff Cumming of the Oceanarium, Catherine Schmitt of the Schoodic Institute, and artist Jennifer Steen Booher, for a talk about sea level rise, last winter's storms, and our future. Learn how to measure and mark predicted high tides in places around the island you care about, and join us in a conversation about coastal resilience and how we can plan for the future.

BAR HARBORโMount Desert Island (MDI) Hospital and Bar Harbor Bank & Trust proudly announce the 31stย Annual David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament to be held on Thursday, September 26ย at Kebo Valley Golf Club.
The David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament has been a signature event for Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, bringing together businesses and golfers from MDI and beyond to support many local organizations throughout the years.ย David Harding, for whom the tournament is named, was Chairman of the Board of Bar Harbor Bankshares for many years. Dave was a strong community supporter who was instrumental in launching the MDI YMCA. He loved golfing, and he loved Kebo.

In 2022, recognizing its vital services to our community, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust selected Mount Desert Island Hospital to manage the tournament and be the primary beneficiary going forward, that year raising over $31,000. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust continues to support as the presenting sponsor, and its employees volunteer their time to help organize and staff the event.

Learning from LaRue Spiker
Online Program with Jenna Jandreau
Mount Desert Historical Society and Library Collaboration
Southwest Harbor - Join us online for โLearning from LaRueโ a MDI Historical Society and Southwest Harbor Public Library collaboration on Tuesday, September 24th at 5:30 p.m. Jenna Jandreau, author of the article โLearning from LaRueโ published in the 2024 edition of Chebacco, will talk about LaRueโs prolific writing and photography in the area, and the impact both her creativity and conscience had on the people and places of Mount Desert Island.
LaRue Spiker, prominent among the Whoโs Who of Mount Desert Island, was a freelance writer, photographer, journalist, and editor of Bar Harbor Times in the early 1960s. Those who remember her describe her as no-nonsense and intelligent; not only did she receive frequent kudos in the Letters to the Editor, but also many criticisms for the opinions she expressed in her editorials and articles.
Having moved to the area โfrom away,โ Spiker brought a fresh lens to the island, capturing not only its natural beauty in her photographs but also numerous people from many different walks of life. She seemed to have an insatiable curiosity about everything MDI, writing about sea urchins, ladyslippers, and ferns, along with feature articles on fishing villages, local artists and writers, and political issues such as nuclear disarmament and the consolidation of MDI high schools.
Jenna Jandreau is a freelance writer and photographer who lives in northern Maineโs Saint John Valley with her husband and Yorkshire Terrier. She was the Collections Manager at MDI Historical Society in 2018 and the Communications Coordinator in 2022-2023. Her writing and photography have appeared in The Maine Townsman, Off the Coast, Strut & Axle, Chebacco, and other publications.

CELEBRATE TOGETHER AT THE SOMESVILLE LIBRARY
Reading with Wings features Maine author Kay Tobler Liss
Author Earl Brechlin hosts discussion of โComing Homeโ
SOUTHWEST HARBORโMaine Author Kay Tobler Liss will delve into her novel โComing Homeโ with guest host Earl Brechlin on Friday, Sept. 27 at 5:30 p.m. with a book signing afterward, as part of Reading with Wings, an occasional series that is a collaboration between the Southwest Harbor Public Library and the Wendell Gilley Museum. This event happens at the Gilley; admission is free but reservations are required at www.wendellgilleymuseum.org/calendar.
Liss says, โI believe thereโs nothing more important at this time in our history than our relationship to the natural world. I want to bring this urgent message to the world through my novels.โ
In โComing Home,โ four generations of a family return to cherished places in nature from their youth and uncover buried secrets about themselves. From the coast of North Carolina to New York, from Savannah, Georgia, to Switzerland, the special places include a meadow, a pine grove, a river, and mountain valley. Their journeys begin after a Christmas dinner and end a year later when they share their stories with each other and start to heal as a family. The novel was released in December 2023 to much praise.
โWe are excited to host Kay Tobler Liss, who impactfully writes of a family coming together with theย natural world a vivid and central character,โ says Erich Reed, director of the SWH library.
Gilley director Sean Charette says that Reading with Wings is a wonderfulย addition to the museumโs collaboration with the Southwest Harbor Public Library. โIt perfectly suits the Gilleyโs mission of bringing people closer to nature through art, and allows both organizations to do more โ and bring unique programs to more people โ by working together.โ
A Publishers Weekly Booklife reviewer wrote: โโฆComing Home explores the importance of family members talking about their feelings, all with a strong focus on the beauty of nature and art. Fans of novels that center around familial bonds, secrets, and self-discovery will find this resonant, with engaging, believable characters and a plot thatโs drawn from life and stirs real tears.โ
Liss has worked as a journalist in New York and Maine. She studied Literature at Bard College and Environmental Studies at Southampton College and taught both subjects. She and her husband live in Jefferson, Maine.
Brechlin, an author and former journalist, will guide the book discussion. He is the creator of more than a dozen books including the lauded โReturn to Moose River,โ a book of interconnected essays recounting annual canoe trips to the North Maine Woods with a small group of friends, closing with the death of his twin brother and the groupโs last trip to spread his brotherโs ashes in the place he loved best. Also a former Maine journalist, he worked for nearly 40 years in the stateโs newspaper industry and was the founding editor of the Mount Desert Islander
