Park Visitation Numbers for October, Island Real Estate Transactions, and Other Briefs
BAR HARBOR—Fifty-seven racers rushed through Bar Harbor proper after a vaguely worried turkey on Sunday, November 6, but it was Sean Brauer who caught (and released) the fleecey fowl. As a result he won a cake from Bartlett Bakery.
Olivia Johnson won for women with an overall time of 20:45.3, Emily Bishop came in second (21:51.5), just a minute behind Johnson, and Anita Konopka third (22:04.2).
Ponce Saltysiak finished first with a time of 16:38.9. Samuel York finished right behind him with a time of 17:13.8. Chris Cooper Sr took third, finishing in 18:48.0.
ACADIA NATIONAL PARK VISITATION NUMBERS
ACADIA—About 22,000 more people entered the park this October compared to last October. This occurred after lower visitation numbers for June, July, August, and September, bringing the number of October visits to 475,553. This is the number for just the Mount Desert Island portions of the park. Visits in Schoodic Peninsula increased for October to approximately 38,775.
The total estimated visitation numbers for January through October of 2023 dropped 2.3 percent from last year. It’s believed that the number was almost 3.8 million. The number of Island Explorer passengers dropped in October (by 500), but was up overall (9%) for the year to approximately 112,750.
Estimated visitation to the park for the first 10 months of this year was just under 3.8 million. That was a drop of 2.3 percent from the same period last year. The park visitation numbers use about one-quarter of Island Explorer numbers. Overnight stays in the campgrounds within the park (not outside) decreased by about 15% this October. It was down about 10% for the year.
It’s estimated that 179,289 camped in the park this year.

MDI BIO LAB BRIEFS
A Post-Doc Builds Proto-Kidneys from Scratch
More than 30 million Americans suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD), including thousands in Maine. When someone’s kidneys fail, they face limited choices for managing their health: a lifetime on dialysis or finding a suitable (and willing) kidney donor. At MDI Bio Lab an international research group is doing ground-breaking work on a potentially better alternative: new kidney tissue or even whole kidneys grown from a patient’s own stem cells.
Report Details Vital NIH Support for Maine
A new report demonstrates the essential role that federal support for biomedical research and development plays in sustaining the health and prosperity of rural states. In Maine, for instance, National Institutes of Health awards from 2016 through last year amounted to $704 million. The spinoff effects are the eye openers: every dollar the NIH invested here produced $2.30 in economic activity, for a total of more than $1.5 billion. That supported nearly 12,000 Maine jobs whose workers earned $530 million over the period.Â
Undergraduate Microscopy Wins Support
Undergraduate research assistant Samuel Broadbent recently won a $2,000 grant to support his work in the MDI Bio Lab's Murawala Laboratory. The award by the University of Maine's Center for Undergraduate Research will support Broadbent's work developing tools to assist 3D microscopy examinations of early development in the highly-regenerative axolotl (Mexican salamander).
You can learn more about the possibilities opened up by MDI Bio Lab's state-of-the-art lighsheet microscope here.
MARTHA TOD DUDMAN AT THE JESUP
Join us for an author talk and Q&A with local author Martha Tod Dudman on her latest novel, Sunrise and the Real World. In this poignant coming-of-age tale, Dudman weaves a narrative that transcends the idyllic imagery of Maine, unraveling a gripping story of resilience, morality, and the enduring impact of our past.
In Sunrise and the Real World, readers follow the compelling story of Lorraine, a recent college graduate who embarks on a journey of self-discovery as she takes on a role at a residential treatment center for troubled teens. Contrary to her expectations of the picturesque landscapes and lighthouses associated with Maine, Lorraine is thrust into a world of abused and angry teenagers, illicit romance, and danger. As she navigates this tumultuous environment, she finds herself entangled in events that shatter her confidence in the world and challenge her own sense of morality.
Years later, after being battered by life's hardships, Lorraine is unexpectedly drawn back to the place that shaped her early adulthood. In a poignant exploration of her past, she confronts the person she once was, the choices she made, and the lingering ghosts that haunt her. Dudman's masterful storytelling unfolds a tale that resonates with readers, delving into the complexities of growth, love, and the enduring impact of our formative years.
