BAR HARBOR BUDGET HEARING & COOL THINGS TO DO
On The Agenda - Bar Harbor Town Meetings and Events
ON THE AGENDA
Every week we document Bar Harbor town government, school, and other similar meetings that we know of. Please let us know if we’ve missed something. Also, sometimes things are on the town calendars and are cancelled or rescheduled, so make sure to double check before you head over!
All the meetings take place at the Bar Harbor Municipal Building at 93 Cottage Street unless otherwise noted. And they usually have a time for public comments. This is not true about executive sessions, which are closed to the public.
So, go! Be informed! Be part of the process. You deserve to be.

GET YOUR WATER QUALITY ON!
Water Quality in Streams Impaired by Acid Rain March 20, 2024 5:30
Downeast Trout Unlimited hosts David Thorne, Fisheries Biologist and Stream Habitat Coordinator for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, for a discussion of efforts to improve water quality and increase reproductive success of Brook Trout in streams impaired by acidic deposition.
Atmospheric acidic deposition has been recognized as a mechanism for degradation of water quality in West Virginia since the 1950s because the poor soils lack a natural buffering capacity. The soils and bedrock geology are overwhelmed, leading to failure of trout stream fisheries. Decades of research has shown that application of high calcium crushed limestone sand can improve the negative effects and increase recruitment and survival of native Brook Trout. Since 1991, over 94,000 tons of limestone has been added to West Virginia streams. Currently the program is using about 5000 tons annually in 63 streams and 5 small impoundments, improving fisheries in over 300 miles of streams and 456 acres of small impoundments.
Thorne specializes in small stream management for native Brook Trout. Among his responsibilities are habitat management, restoration, and overseeing the DNR’s acid waters mitigation program. He has over 30 years of experience in fisheries, much of that researching ways to counter the effects of atmospheric acidic deposition on the infertile waters of West Virginia. He received his MS degree from West Virginia University in Wildlife and Fisheries Resources.
Downeast Maine has many of the same water quality issues as West Virginia.100 years of acid rain has lowered pH <6.5 in many Downeast waters making them acidic. According to the EPA these pH levels are below values needed to support salmon. In 2004 the National Academy of Sciences reviewed the Maine salmon recovery plan and named liming as one of the top priorities for restoring Atlantic salmon runs. Join us on March 20 to learn how Maine can benefit from Thorne’s research.

“Things We Do in Bar Harbor” and “On the Agenda” is mostly curated by me looking for things happening in the upcoming week, which takes a lot of time and I truly do not know all that is going on.
If there’s something in Bar Harbor (or MDI) that you’d like me to mention, please let me know, because I’m definitely always missing some events every week.
