Frost Farms Proposes an Addition
Manset Pier re-decking and other island town planning board news

MOUNT DESERT ISLAND—Melissa Frost, founder of Frost Farms, came before the Bar Harbor Design Review Board to propose an addition to a non-historical building on the Town Hill site, May 22.
“It was an old garage,” Frost told board members on Thursday of the building. An already approved and existing portico is on the building’s north side. “We’re looking at putting an addition on the south side.”
That addition, if it also receives a building permit, will be on the Hammond Lumber side.
The proposal includes a 486 square feet section with a covered porch area, which is over 300 square feet. They plan to take out the two garage doors and add a single garage door.
“I think it’s going to look beautiful,” board member Bo Jennings said.
It was quickly deemed appropriate.
“This is really going to add to your business,” Chair Barbara Sassaman said.
According to its website, Frost Farms began in 2015 with the intention of creating “a community for plant lovers and offer top-quality plants and gardening supplies.”
The meeting lasted approximately five minutes.
MOUNT DESERT
NORTHEAST HARBOR GOLF CLUB
The Northeast Harbor Golf Club will go before the Mount Desert Planning Board at a June 11 meeting to ask to expand an existing manmade pond.
The proposal is to expand the pond to 355 feet long by 101 feet wide with a depth of seven feet. It is currently 220 feet long, 60 feet wide, and six feet deep.

Christopher Campbell and Cristina Paumgarten are also scheduled to go before the Mount Desert Planning Board at the same meeting to request shoreline stabilization of approximately 106 linear feet of coastal bluff erosion at their 26 Manchester Road property.
TREMONT
At a late April meeting, the Tremont Planning Board unanimously approved Paolo and Monica Fanti’s request for a set of stairs to the water at their 16 Rocky Coast Road property.
The board also discussed its action items and goals. At its May 27 meeting, the board is scheduled to review language for draft sales.
According to a press release from the town, “In January 2024, Tremont Consolidated School (TCS) discovered PFAS (also known as forever chemical ) in its drinking water, slightly above the state limit of 20 ng/L, and switched to bottled water as it explored water filtration options. MDI High School had discovered PFAS in drinking water two years earlier and now filters all drinking water at the school.
“Dr. Jane Disney from MDI Biological Laboratory and Dr. Megan Romano at Dartmouth Medical School have received pilot funding for a project to help 20 families understand PFAS exposure and its impacts on child health. The project is ‘PFAS Understanding in Local Schools and Environments’ or PULSE. They will work with families to identify potential PFAS sources and identify resources to limit exposure.”

Temporary Closure of Manset Pier
The Manset Pier will be temporarily closed starting Wednesday, May 28 for decking installation. The project is expected to take 1 to 2 days, and the pier will reopen as soon as the work is completed.
Please note: The Manset boat ramp and parking lot will remain open during this time. The Lower Town Dock is available for all commercial use.
