ACADIA NATIONAL PARK—The man who died in a solo bicycle accident in Acadia National Park has been identified as John Bennett “JB” Parrett, according to the Bangor Daily News.
According to an obituary on forevermissed.com, Parrett was born January 22, 1954, and was raised in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Shortly after 1 p.m. on September 9, Parrett had fallen off his bicycle while on the Park Loop Road. He was near the Cadillac North Ridge Trail crossing.
“The man, an experienced road bicyclist, lost control of his bike after his foot dislodged from a clip-in pedal. The individual wore a helmet but suffered significant injuries after he fell head-first off of his bike,” a release from the park said.
Park rangers performed life-saving measures. The Bar Harbor Fire Department transported Parrett to downtown Bar Harbor. He was taken by LifeFlight of Maine helicopter to the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
According to Bar Harbor Fire Chief Matt Bartlett, upon receiving the request for an ambulance from the park and learning of the condition of the victim, Deputy Chief John Lennon immediately requested that the Bar Harbor Police Department dispatch ask LifeFlight to respond to the landing zone at the ball field downtown.
The LifeFlight helicopter and the Bar Harbor ambulance arrived at the ball field almost simultaneously and the patient was transferred directly from the ambulance to the helicopter after the LifeFlight care crew had prepped him within the ambulance.
Parrett graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1976 and served in the U.S. Navy until 1986. Upon leaving the Navy, he worked in software development for a variety of communications and technology companies before retiring from Amazon in 2015.
Parrett leaves behind a wife of 39 years, Kim, two children, and three grandchildren.
Although a reportedly experienced cyclist, Parrett’s obituary says that cycling was his most recent of many hobbies and that it “allowed him to improve his overall fitness and enjoy the beauty of the New England countryside and the companionship of friends.” It added, “If he was destined to leave this world too soon, he did so while immersed in one of the great joys of his life, cycling with friends.”

SOUTH PORTLAND—On Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at approximately 12:00 p.m., Troopers responded to a single vehicle crash at the curve of the Exit 45 northbound toll in South Portland. The initial investigation indicates the driver of a tan 2019 Toyota Tacoma crashed his vehicle and then took off on foot with his dog. The driver later identified as 41-year-old Ryan Simpson, of Portland, ran through the nearby woods and into the Applebee’s parking lot on Maine Mall Road. Clipless bicycle pedals are widely used and once you get used to them they work fairly well. But if I had a buck for every cyclist injured because they was unable to free a foot quickly enough to avoid a crash I'd be wealthy enough to stop picking up bottles and cans on the side of the road. I switched to Power Straps years ago and they are not only much less expensive they offer all the same advantages of clipless pedals with none of the danger!
