On The Agenda & Things To Do This Week in Bar Harbor
ON THE AGENDA
Every week we document Bar Harbor town government, school, and other similar meetings that we know of. Please let us know if we’ve missed something. Also, sometimes things are on the town calendars and are cancelled or rescheduled, so make sure to double check before you head over!
All the meetings take place at the Bar Harbor Municipal Building at 93 Cottage Street unless otherwise noted. And they usually have a time for public comments. This is not true about executive sessions, which are closed to the public.
So, go! Be informed! Be part of the process. You deserve to be.

To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

SUMMER INSTITUTE
2023 COA Summer Institute reimagines exploration
BAR HARBOR — The promise of exploration and the hard-to-resolve ethical questions about the impacts of exploration on both human and non-human communities are the focus of the 2023 College of the Atlantic Summer Institute: Reimagining Exploration, held in collaboration with The National Geographic Society, July 31-August 4. Attendance is free but registration is required at coa.edu/si.
Some of the greatest living explorers, writers, artists, and thinkers will join the institute, which takes place on campus and livestreamed around the world. Their conversations will critically examine the concept of exploration in the broadest sense, aiming to inspire an approach that is rooted in inclusivity and reciprocity, while also preserving the magnificence and health of our planet and its people. All events are free and open to the public, but registration is required.
“The Summer Institute is a highlight of the summer season at COA, when community members are invited to take part in important conversations about critical issues,” said COA Dean of Advancement Shawn Keeley. “Exploration has brought so many discoveries and insights to humanity, but for far too long we’ve ignored some of the very real human and planetary costs of such pursuits. Hearing from some of the world’s leading explorers and celebrating all we have gained while having hard conversations about how we conduct exploration going forward is an important step in building a better future together.”
The institute features a breadth of keynote speakers who bring decades of knowledge, experience, and action to the conversation. Among these guests is the renowned paleoanthropologist Lee Berger, known for his explorations into human origins in Africa, Asia, and Micronesia; environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy, whose art pieces blur the line between human and nature; Sylvia Earle whose lifetime of exploring the ocean has provided us with countless discoveries and insights; Moriba Jah, associate professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics at the University of Texas at Austin who is pioneering what it means to be a “space environmentalist;” Nirav Shah, principal deputy director of the US CDC and recent leader of Maine’s COVID-19 response as former director of the Maine CDC; and Dr. Michael Bogenschutz, an addiction psychiatrist whose research focuses on psilocybin and its potential to treat alcohol abuse disorder and other addiction diseases.
The institute kicks off Monday evening, July 31 with “Expanding Exploration: Indigenous Futures and Perspectives,” featuring National Geographic Explorers Keolu Fox and Kiliii Yüyan in conversation with Abbe Museum executive director Betsy Richards. Morning and evening sessions continue through Friday, Aug. 4. Guests include National Geographic Society CEO Jill Tiefenthaler, historian and author Adam Goodheart, National Public Radio TED Radio Hour host Manoush Zomorod, sci-fi author Kim Stanley Robinson, and more.
Cocktail receptions follow each evening session, with a special appearance on Tuesday, Aug. 1 of the Samba Meets Jazz musicians who will offer Brazilian and Afro-Cuban jazz. On Friday, Aug. 4, the institute closes with “Our Ocean: Lessons from the Deep,” a conversation with environmental journalist Andrew Revkin and National Geographic Explorer Sylvia Earle.
The institute is free but registration is required. Please visit coa.edu/si to learn more.

Third Annual Ashley Bryan Lecture: Marks of a Native Son with Keith Morris Washington
BAR HARBOR—Join the Jesup Memorial Library in celebrating the Third Annual Ashley Bryan Honorary Lecture with Keith Morris Washington on Thursday, July 13 at 6:30 p.m.
The art of Keith Morris Washington investigates meaning and metaphor through landscape and portraiture. These landscapes and full-body portraits explore memory, identity, and social themes, that are latent and often obscured by visible features, cultural (mis)understanding, and time.
Washington is an acclaimed artist who has studied Fine Art, Painting, Graphic Design, and Printmaking at Tufts University School of the Museum of Fine Art, Massachusetts College of Art, and the American River College. He has been a Studio Foundation professor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston since 2000.
The three bodies of work that Washington will share and discuss are:
Within our Gates: Site and Memory in the American Landscape, an ongoing series of paintings capturing nearly forgotten bucolic crime scenes of lynching sites throughout the United States. The series mediates spaces, investigates a past still present, interrogates tradition, and questions discrepancies extolled in the Hudson River/Luminist paintings.
Black Lives…, inspired by the Black Lives Matter (BLM) and Say Her Name movements, these slightly larger-than-life portraits of anonymous folks, extol the humanity of people who live in areas where Say Her Name and BLM have been active.
Marks of a Native Son is a series of self-portraits.
The Annual Ashley Bryan Lecture is named in honor of the late printmaker, author, puppet maker, painter, storyteller, and illustrator Ashley Bryan, who devoted his life to bringing people together through art. This yearly lecture brings a distinguished artist or critic of color whose work reflects similarly this deep interest in racial equity to discuss that work with the Downeast Maine community.
This event is a hybrid program and registration is required to attend either in person or on Zoom. Register at jesuplibrary.org/events/washington or email eventsignup@jesuplibrary.org. In-person attendees will be encouraged to wear masks. To find out more about the Ashley Bryan Lecture as well as how to support this event in years to come visit jesuplibrary.org/ashleybryan.
FARNSY: A NOVEL
BAR HARBOR_ Please join us at the Jesup Memorial Library for an author talk with William Anthony who will speaking about his book Farnsy: A Novel.
William Phineas Farnsworth—or “Farnsy,” as he’s known to his friends—is a young police officer in his hometown on the Maine coast. Summer people have started migrating back, and Farnsy’s old flame Lucy, the ex-wife of a lobsterman, is as elusive as ever. Farnsy thinks his life has become as predictable as the tides—until he stops for a coffee at Waltz’s Soda Fountain and hears about rolls of Necco wafers that have turned up in cottages on nearby lakes. Farnsy’s detective instincts kick in, and he’s on the case. But when he finds Necco wafers in his own cottage and discovers his father’s favorite fishing lure is missing, the mystery gets personal. Can Farnsy find the perp while he tries to figure out the mysteries of love? Farnsy is a quirky and heartwarming read for anyone who loves Maine, has been to Maine, plans to visit Maine, or who just likes their Maine humor dry.
William Anthony lives part of the year in Maine with his wife and an English Lab and a Maine coon cat. When he’s not writing or painting, Bill’s out on the Damariscotta River in the Susan B., a Maine-built Pulsifer Hampton. Though Mainers would say he’s “from away,” Anthony considers himself a Mainer. So far, most Mainers have been too polite to correct him. Bill has spent his life listening to stories, reading stories, and studying, recording, and telling stories. Bill believes that storytelling is essential to being human. Bill is the author of the “Midcoast Boater’s Journal,” which appears monthly in the Lincoln County News.
This event is a hybrid program and registration is required to attend either in person or on Zoom. Register at jesuplibrary.org/events/farnsy or email eventsignup@jesuplibrary.org.

Many of his novels and stories have ecological, cultural, and political themes and feature scientists as heroes. ART INSTALLATION AT COA ALL SUMMER LONG
Acclaimed artist Andy Goldsworthy will be at College of the Atlantic this summer to install Road Line, his first permanent artwork in the State of Maine. Goldsworthy is renowned for his site-specific installations that span the globe, and the College is thrilled to provide the setting for a piece that speaks to both the history and geology of the region.
Comprised of a single continuous line of granite curbstones, Road Line will begin its journey through campus at Route 3 and draw its path to the coast of Frenchman Bay. Taking from the tradition of granite curbstones that edge many of the roads in East Coast towns and cities, Goldsworthy has actively worked in granite throughout the Northeast where there is still a lively granite industry.
“One would be hard pressed to name an artist who more emphatically lives the COA human-ecological ethos than Andy Goldsworthy,” says COA President Darron Collins ‘92. “Andy’s presence here and the permanence of the installation will have a tremendous impact on the campus and the region.”
Funded largely by two anonymous donors who are passionate about the piece’s potential to intersect the study of human ecology and to create a world-class work of public art in Downeast Maine, Road Line will be an expression of human and geological movement.
“Road Line would only become apparent as an artwork after it has left the ‘straight and narrow’ and goes its own way,” Goldsworthy said of the piece upon proposal. “I hope this will resonate with the students who will also pass through the college on their own journeys and that, wherever life takes them afterwards, they will always be reminded of their time in Maine whenever they see a curbstone. It would be the antithesis of the definition of curb, which is to control or limit.”
In addition to Goldsworthy’s time on campus for installation, he will take part in the COA Summer Institute: Reimagining Exploration, July 31-August 4, held in collaboration with The National Geographic Society. Goldsworthy will be in conversation with Courtney J. Martin, PhD, Paul Mellon Director of the Yale Center for British Art. For more information, visit coa.edu/summerinstitute.
More about Andy Goldsworthy
In a diverse career spanning four decades, Andy Goldsworthy has become one of the most prominent and iconic contemporary sculptors. In photographs, sculptures, installations, and films, Goldsworthy documents his explorations of the effects of time, the relationship between humans and their natural surroundings, and the beauty in loss and regeneration.
Recent permanent site-specific installations by Goldsworthy include Walking Wall, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri; Watershed, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, Massachusetts; Stone Sea, Saint Louis Art Museum, Missouri; Chaumont Cairn, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, France; Path and Rising Stone, Albright Knox Art Gallery, New York; and Wood Line, Presidio of San Francisco, California. Goldsworthy is currently working on Hanging Stones in North York Moors, UK. In this ongoing project, ten existing buildings, all in varying states of disrepair, have been or will be rebuilt as artworks and connected by a six-mile walk encompassing Northdale, near Rosedale Abbey.
Other permanent works can be seen at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; de Young Museum, California; Museum of Jewish Heritage, New York; Storm King Art Center, New York; Stanford University, California; and Haute Provence Geological Reserve in Digne-les-Bains, France, among numerous other sites. Major solo exhibitions of Goldsworthy's work have been presented by the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, England; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Spain; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Neuberger Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, California; and Des Moines Art Center, Illinois.
The artist was born in Cheshire, England, in 1956, and is now based in Scotland.
