About Art Meets Science
Mount Desert Island has long been a place where painters, writers, and scientists intermingle, enriching the community and contributing to the world beyond in transformative ways. Continuing this tradition, MDI Biological Laboratory, a center for the study of regenerative medicine has been inspired by the 2018 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) whitepaper, “Branches from the Same Tree,” to invite leading scholars from the disciplines of art and science to come together on our campus to address shared interests from the perspectives of their fields.
Building upon Albert Einstein’s assertion that “all religions, arts, and sciences are branches from the same tree,” this consensus study report supports the intentions of the Bio Lab's Art Meets Science program: a dedication to exploring the belief that all human knowledge and inquiry are fundamentally connected, and as further outlined in the report, “that an educated and open mind empowers the individual to separate truth from falsehood, superstition and bias from fact, and logic from illogic.”

SUMMER INSTITUTE
2023 COA Summer Institute reimagines exploration
BAR HARBOR — The promise of exploration and the hard-to-resolve ethical questions about the impacts of exploration on both human and non-human communities are the focus of the 2023 College of the Atlantic Summer Institute: Reimagining Exploration, held in collaboration with The National Geographic Society, July 31-August 4. Attendance is free but registration is required at coa.edu/si.
Some of the greatest living explorers, writers, artists, and thinkers will join the institute, which takes place on campus and livestreamed around the world. Their conversations will critically examine the concept of exploration in the broadest sense, aiming to inspire an approach that is rooted in inclusivity and reciprocity, while also preserving the magnificence and health of our planet and its people. All events are free and open to the public, but registration is required.
“The Summer Institute is a highlight of the summer season at COA, when community members are invited to take part in important conversations about critical issues,” said COA Dean of Advancement Shawn Keeley. “Exploration has brought so many discoveries and insights to humanity, but for far too long we’ve ignored some of the very real human and planetary costs of such pursuits. Hearing from some of the world’s leading explorers and celebrating all we have gained while having hard conversations about how we conduct exploration going forward is an important step in building a better future together.”
The institute features a breadth of keynote speakers who bring decades of knowledge, experience, and action to the conversation. Among these guests is the renowned paleoanthropologist Lee Berger, known for his explorations into human origins in Africa, Asia, and Micronesia; environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy, whose art pieces blur the line between human and nature; Sylvia Earle whose lifetime of exploring the ocean has provided us with countless discoveries and insights; Moriba Jah, associate professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics at the University of Texas at Austin who is pioneering what it means to be a “space environmentalist;” Nirav Shah, principal deputy director of the US CDC and recent leader of Maine’s COVID-19 response as former director of the Maine CDC; and Dr. Michael Bogenschutz, an addiction psychiatrist whose research focuses on psilocybin and its potential to treat alcohol abuse disorder and other addiction diseases.
The institute kicks off Monday evening, July 31 with “Expanding Exploration: Indigenous Futures and Perspectives,” featuring National Geographic Explorers Keolu Fox and Kiliii Yüyan in conversation with Abbe Museum executive director Betsy Richards. Morning and evening sessions continue through Friday, Aug. 4. Guests include National Geographic Society CEO Jill Tiefenthaler, historian and author Adam Goodheart, National Public Radio TED Radio Hour host Manoush Zomorod, sci-fi author Kim Stanley Robinson, and more.
Cocktail receptions follow each evening session, with a special appearance on Tuesday, Aug. 1 of the Samba Meets Jazz musicians who will offer Brazilian and Afro-Cuban jazz. On Friday, Aug. 4, the institute closes with “Our Ocean: Lessons from the Deep,” a conversation with environmental journalist Andrew Revkin and National Geographic Explorer Sylvia Earle.
The institute is free but registration is required. Please visit coa.edu/si to learn more.

More about The National Geographic Society
For more than 130 years, the National Geographic Society has funded the best and brightest individuals dedicated to scientific discovery and understanding of our world. Their historic commitment to dauntless exploration dates back to their founding in 1888 when 33 prominent scholars and scientists established an organization dedicated to the “increase and diffusion of knowledge.” Today, National Geographic Explorers are continuing to push the boundaries of knowledge, uncovering new insights about the natural and cultural worlds, and strengthening our connection to them and one another. More about COA
College of the Atlantic is the first college in the US to focus on the relationship between humans and the environment. A human-ecological perspective integrates knowledge from all academic disciplines and from personal experience to investigate—and ultimately improve—the relationships between human beings and our social, natural, built, and technological environments. The human ecological perspective guides all aspects of education, research, activism, and interactions among the college’s students, faculty, staff, and trustees. Learn more at coa.edu.
Healthy Acadia Offers Resources for those at High Risk for Respiratory Illness
Though the global health emergency created by the COVID-19 pandemic has officially ended, Healthy Acadia remains committed to connecting community members at high risk for respiratory illness with resources and support. In continued collaboration with the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), this nonprofit community health organization has available a limited number of essential medical supplies, including N95 masks, at-home rapid COVID-19 antigen test kits, and pulse oximeters, for individuals at high risk for serious health complications due to respiratory illness.
Pulse oximeters play a crucial role in monitoring the oxygen levels and heart rate of at-risk individuals, assisting in determining whether hospitalization is necessary. With the ongoing presence of COVID-19 and the recent surge in respiratory viruses such as influenza (flu) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), these medical devices prove valuable in assessing the condition of those affected. This is particularly significant for immunocompromised individuals or those at a heightened risk of severe or life-threatening outcomes from respiratory illnesses or infections.
To request a pulse oximeter, please visit bit.ly/ha-pulse-ox.
To request N95 masks, please go to bit.ly/ha-n95-masks.
To request rapid at-home COVID-19 antigen tests, please go to bit.ly/cvd-tests.
For additional information on masks, COVID vaccines, and COVID-19, follow Healthy Acadia on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. For specific inquiries, please contact Healthy Acadia’s Vaccine Equity Team at nina.duggan@healthyacadia.org or 207–271-6023.

ART INSTALLATION AT COA ALL SUMMER LONG
Acclaimed artist Andy Goldsworthy will be at College of the Atlantic this summer to install Road Line, his first permanent artwork in the State of Maine. Goldsworthy is renowned for his site-specific installations that span the globe, and the College is thrilled to provide the setting for a piece that speaks to both the history and geology of the region.
Comprised of a single continuous line of granite curbstones, Road Line will begin its journey through campus at Route 3 and draw its path to the coast of Frenchman Bay. Taking from the tradition of granite curbstones that edge many of the roads in East Coast towns and cities, Goldsworthy has actively worked in granite throughout the Northeast where there is still a lively granite industry.
“One would be hard pressed to name an artist who more emphatically lives the COA human-ecological ethos than Andy Goldsworthy,” says COA President Darron Collins ‘92. “Andy’s presence here and the permanence of the installation will have a tremendous impact on the campus and the region.”
Funded largely by two anonymous donors who are passionate about the piece’s potential to intersect the study of human ecology and to create a world-class work of public art in Downeast Maine, Road Line will be an expression of human and geological movement.
“Road Line would only become apparent as an artwork after it has left the ‘straight and narrow’ and goes its own way,” Goldsworthy said of the piece upon proposal. “I hope this will resonate with the students who will also pass through the college on their own journeys and that, wherever life takes them afterwards, they will always be reminded of their time in Maine whenever they see a curbstone. It would be the antithesis of the definition of curb, which is to control or limit.”
In addition to Goldsworthy’s time on campus for installation, he will take part in the COA Summer Institute: Reimagining Exploration, July 31-August 4, held in collaboration with The National Geographic Society. Goldsworthy will be in conversation with Courtney J. Martin, PhD, Paul Mellon Director of the Yale Center for British Art. For more information, visit coa.edu/summerinstitute.
More about Andy Goldsworthy
In a diverse career spanning four decades, Andy Goldsworthy has become one of the most prominent and iconic contemporary sculptors. In photographs, sculptures, installations, and films, Goldsworthy documents his explorations of the effects of time, the relationship between humans and their natural surroundings, and the beauty in loss and regeneration.
Recent permanent site-specific installations by Goldsworthy include Walking Wall, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri; Watershed, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, Massachusetts; Stone Sea, Saint Louis Art Museum, Missouri; Chaumont Cairn, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, France; Path and Rising Stone, Albright Knox Art Gallery, New York; and Wood Line, Presidio of San Francisco, California. Goldsworthy is currently working on Hanging Stones in North York Moors, UK. In this ongoing project, ten existing buildings, all in varying states of disrepair, have been or will be rebuilt as artworks and connected by a six-mile walk encompassing Northdale, near Rosedale Abbey.
Other permanent works can be seen at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; de Young Museum, California; Museum of Jewish Heritage, New York; Storm King Art Center, New York; Stanford University, California; and Haute Provence Geological Reserve in Digne-les-Bains, France, among numerous other sites. Major solo exhibitions of Goldsworthy's work have been presented by the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, England; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Spain; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Neuberger Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, California; and Des Moines Art Center, Illinois.
The artist was born in Cheshire, England, in 1956, and is now based in Scotland.

EDEN’S FARMERS’ MARKET
Sundays
9-12
Bar Harbor YMCA parking lot off Park Street
Another season of free produce for seniors begins as Maine Senior FarmShare grows and evolves
Whether you prefer tomatoes, beet greens, or sugar snap peas, there’s nothing better than fresh, local fruits and vegetables in the summer - especially when they’re free. By participating in Maine Senior FarmShare, income-eligible Maine seniors can receive $50 worth of credit to spend on fruits and vegetables at select farms and farmers’ markets.
Healthy Acadia is partnering with Maine Senior FarmShare and Maine Federation of Farmers Markets to launch a new Senior FarmShare program at the Bar Harbor Eden Farmers’ Market. Senior Farm Share is designed to support lower-income older adults in accessing healthy food while also ensuring that Maine farmers are fairly compensated for the food they grow. To participate in Senior FarmShare, a person must be a Maine resident; be 60 years old or older, or 55 years old or older for Native Americans; and meet income guidelines. More than 100 farms in Maine, distributed across all 16 counties, are authorized to participate in MSFP.
Enrolling with the Bar Harbor Eden Farmers Market Senior FarmShare program will enable participants to spend their $50 credit on produce from any vendor’s stall over the course of the season, rather than choose a single farm in the spring. The market is open on Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon from Mother’s Day weekend until the end of October. If you would like to enroll with the Bar Harbor Eden Farmers’ Market, visit the info booth at the farmers’ market beginning on May 20th, or check for updates at https://healthyacadia.org/ha-sfs.
Senior FarmShare participants must re-enroll every year: if you enjoyed being a part of the program in the past, don’t forget to reach out to the farm of your choice to sign up again this year. To find an authorized farm in your area, visit www.maine.gov/dacf/ard/seniorfarmshare and search for a farm stand near you, a farmer who attends your favorite farmers’ market, or a farmer who makes deliveries, based on your needs and preferences.

According to the town’s website, “Meetings that are broadcast live can be viewed at home by watching Cable Access Channel 7 or 1303 (Spectrum Cable only) and online at Town Hall Streams.”
“Things We Do in Bar Harbor” and “On the Agenda” is mostly curated by me looking for things happening in the upcoming week, which takes a lot of time. If there’s something in Bar Harbor (or MDI) that you’d like me to mention, please let me know, because I’m definitely always missing some events every week.
