ON THE AGENDA
Every week we document Bar Harbor town government, school, and other similar meetings that we know of. Please let us know if we’ve missed something. Also, sometimes things are on the town calendars and are cancelled or rescheduled, so make sure to double check before you head over!
All the meetings take place at the Bar Harbor Municipal Building at 93 Cottage Street unless otherwise noted. And they usually have a time for public comments. This is not true about executive sessions, which are closed to the public.

About Art Meets Science
Mount Desert Island has long been a place where painters, writers, and scientists intermingle, enriching the community and contributing to the world beyond in transformative ways. Continuing this tradition, MDI Biological Laboratory, a center for the study of regenerative medicine has been inspired by the 2018 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) whitepaper, “Branches from the Same Tree,” to invite leading scholars from the disciplines of art and science to come together on our campus to address shared interests from the perspectives of their fields.
Building upon Albert Einstein’s assertion that “all religions, arts, and sciences are branches from the same tree,” this consensus study report supports the intentions of the Bio Lab's Art Meets Science program: a dedication to exploring the belief that all human knowledge and inquiry are fundamentally connected, and as further outlined in the report, “that an educated and open mind empowers the individual to separate truth from falsehood, superstition and bias from fact, and logic from illogic.”

Continuing Dr. King’s Legacy: Antidotes to Self-Deception and Comfortable Vanity”
BAR HARBOR_ Please join us at the Jesup Memorial Library on Thursday, June 8th at 7 p.m. for a Mount Desert Island Racial Equity panel discussion titled “Continuing Dr. King’s Legacy: Antidotes to Self-Deception and Comfortable Vanity”
Three Black members of the Downeast community recently came together to discuss living in white dominated spaces and the continuation of Dr. King’s work that still cries out to be done. Initially asked to present their discussion at a breakfast held to honor Dr. King’s birthday which was canceled due to an ice-storm, they were excited to be asked to share their panel discussion with the Jesup Library community.

Janine “JG” Georgette is an actor, singer, poet and educator who worked as a teaching artist for over 50 years. During the past several summers an obsession with sailing brought them to the beauty of the Maine coast where an unexpected connection to Ellsworth was fostered by work with the Juneteenth Downeast planning group.
Jacques H. Newell Taylor is an exercise design specialist keenly interested in elucidating and exploiting the relationships between physical performance, mental performance, and personal transformation. Jacques’s mission is to leverage physical and mental health to facilitate wise, compassionate action in our communities. He is a husband and father of two and is grateful to live in Passamaquoddy territory, also known as Southwest Harbor, Maine.
They note that we have had our first Black President. Segregation is no longer as blatant as a sign telling you where to sit, eat, or live. There are a growing number of Black millionaires. Rap, hip-hop, and R&B have taken over pop music - making the term "crossover artist" obsolete. So here we are. By many measures we, Black folk, are making it. Comfortable in our effort. Comfortable in what we perceive to be the fruit of our advocacy. Dr. King warned us about this. We invite you to join us in taking a closer look as we develop ways to work together on antidotes to the pervasive racism that continues to poison our society.
This event is a virtual program with the option of viewing it virtually in person at the Jesup and registration is required to attend either in person or on Zoom. Register at jesuplibrary.org/events/legacy or email eventsignup@jesuplibrary.org

ART INSTALLATION AT COA ALL SUMMER LONG
Acclaimed artist Andy Goldsworthy will be at College of the Atlantic this summer to install Road Line, his first permanent artwork in the State of Maine. Goldsworthy is renowned for his site-specific installations that span the globe, and the College is thrilled to provide the setting for a piece that speaks to both the history and geology of the region.
Comprised of a single continuous line of granite curbstones, Road Line will begin its journey through campus at Route 3 and draw its path to the coast of Frenchman Bay. Taking from the tradition of granite curbstones that edge many of the roads in East Coast towns and cities, Goldsworthy has actively worked in granite throughout the Northeast where there is still a lively granite industry.
“One would be hard pressed to name an artist who more emphatically lives the COA human-ecological ethos than Andy Goldsworthy,” says COA President Darron Collins ‘92. “Andy’s presence here and the permanence of the installation will have a tremendous impact on the campus and the region.”
Funded largely by two anonymous donors who are passionate about the piece’s potential to intersect the study of human ecology and to create a world-class work of public art in Downeast Maine, Road Line will be an expression of human and geological movement.
“Road Line would only become apparent as an artwork after it has left the ‘straight and narrow’ and goes its own way,” Goldsworthy said of the piece upon proposal. “I hope this will resonate with the students who will also pass through the college on their own journeys and that, wherever life takes them afterwards, they will always be reminded of their time in Maine whenever they see a curbstone. It would be the antithesis of the definition of curb, which is to control or limit.”
In addition to Goldsworthy’s time on campus for installation, he will take part in the COA Summer Institute: Reimagining Exploration, July 31-August 4, held in collaboration with The National Geographic Society. Goldsworthy will be in conversation with Courtney J. Martin, PhD, Paul Mellon Director of the Yale Center for British Art. For more information, visit coa.edu/summerinstitute.
More about Andy Goldsworthy
In a diverse career spanning four decades, Andy Goldsworthy has become one of the most prominent and iconic contemporary sculptors. In photographs, sculptures, installations, and films, Goldsworthy documents his explorations of the effects of time, the relationship between humans and their natural surroundings, and the beauty in loss and regeneration.
Recent permanent site-specific installations by Goldsworthy include Walking Wall, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri; Watershed, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, Massachusetts; Stone Sea, Saint Louis Art Museum, Missouri; Chaumont Cairn, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, France; Path and Rising Stone, Albright Knox Art Gallery, New York; and Wood Line, Presidio of San Francisco, California. Goldsworthy is currently working on Hanging Stones in North York Moors, UK. In this ongoing project, ten existing buildings, all in varying states of disrepair, have been or will be rebuilt as artworks and connected by a six-mile walk encompassing Northdale, near Rosedale Abbey.
Other permanent works can be seen at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; de Young Museum, California; Museum of Jewish Heritage, New York; Storm King Art Center, New York; Stanford University, California; and Haute Provence Geological Reserve in Digne-les-Bains, France, among numerous other sites. Major solo exhibitions of Goldsworthy's work have been presented by the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, England; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Spain; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Neuberger Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, California; and Des Moines Art Center, Illinois.
The artist was born in Cheshire, England, in 1956, and is now based in Scotland.
About College of the Atlantic
College of the Atlantic is the first college in the US to focus on the relationship between humans and the environment. The intentionally small school of 350 students and 35 faculty enriches the liberal arts tradition through a distinctive educational philosophy—human ecology. A human-ecological perspective integrates knowledge from all academic disciplines and from personal experience to investigate—and ultimately improve—the relationships between human beings and our social, natural, built, and technological environments. The human ecological perspective guides all aspects of education, research, activism, and interactions among the college’s students, faculty, staff, and trustees. Learn more at coa.edu.

EDEN’S FARMERS’ MARKET
Sundays
9-12
Bar Harbor YMCA parking lot off Park Street
Another season of free produce for seniors begins as Maine Senior FarmShare grows and evolves
Whether you prefer tomatoes, beet greens, or sugar snap peas, there’s nothing better than fresh, local fruits and vegetables in the summer - especially when they’re free. By participating in Maine Senior FarmShare, income-eligible Maine seniors can receive $50 worth of credit to spend on fruits and vegetables at select farms and farmers’ markets.
Healthy Acadia is partnering with Maine Senior FarmShare and Maine Federation of Farmers Markets to launch a new Senior FarmShare program at the Bar Harbor Eden Farmers’ Market. Senior Farm Share is designed to support lower-income older adults in accessing healthy food while also ensuring that Maine farmers are fairly compensated for the food they grow. To participate in Senior FarmShare, a person must be a Maine resident; be 60 years old or older, or 55 years old or older for Native Americans; and meet income guidelines. More than 100 farms in Maine, distributed across all 16 counties, are authorized to participate in MSFP.
Enrolling with the Bar Harbor Eden Farmers Market Senior FarmShare program will enable participants to spend their $50 credit on produce from any vendor’s stall over the course of the season, rather than choose a single farm in the spring. The market is open on Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon from Mother’s Day weekend until the end of October. If you would like to enroll with the Bar Harbor Eden Farmers’ Market, visit the info booth at the farmers’ market beginning on May 20th, or check for updates at https://healthyacadia.org/ha-sfs.
Senior FarmShare participants must re-enroll every year: if you enjoyed being a part of the program in the past, don’t forget to reach out to the farm of your choice to sign up again this year. To find an authorized farm in your area, visit www.maine.gov/dacf/ard/seniorfarmshare and search for a farm stand near you, a farmer who attends your favorite farmers’ market, or a farmer who makes deliveries, based on your needs and preferences.
Participating farms by county:
Backstage Farm (at the Blue Hill Farmers’ Market or at their farm stand in Blue Hill)
Calyx Farm (at the Northeast Harbor Farmers’ Market)
Northern Bay Organics (at the Stonington Farmers’ Market or at their farm stand in Penobscot, or contact them about delivery options)
Simon’s Hancock Farm in Hancock
Amber’s Best (at their farmstand in Stetson, or contact them about delivery options)
Morgan Bay Farm in Surry
Rime nor Reason Farm (at the Calais Farmer’s Market or at their farmstand in Charlotte)
Far Out Farm (at the Lubec Farmers’ Market)
Smithereen Farm (at the Lubec Farmers’ Market or at their farmstand in Pembroke)
Amber’s Best (at the Machias Valley Farmers’ Market, or contact them about delivery options)
Bristol’s Redbird Farm (at the Milbridge Farmers’ Market, at their farmstand in Harrington, or contact them about delivery options)
Folklore Farm (at their farmstand in Cherryfield, or contact them about delivery options)
Healthy Acadia is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that engages in a broad range of initiatives to build healthier communities and make it easier for people to lead healthy lives across Washington and Hancock counties, Maine. Learn more at www.healthyacadia.org.
