On The Agenda - Bar Harbor Town Meetings & Things to Do
Parks and Rec to Discuss What is Allowed On Athletic Fields
ON THE AGENDA
Every week we document Bar Harbor town government, school, and other similar meetings that we know of. Please let us know if we’ve missed something. Also, sometimes things are on the town calendars and are cancelled or rescheduled, so make sure to double check before you head over!
All the meetings take place at the Bar Harbor Municipal Building at 93 Cottage Street unless otherwise noted. And they usually have a time for public comments. This is not true about executive sessions, which are closed to the public.
So, go! Be informed! Be part of the process. You deserve to be.

BAR HARBOR FIRE DEPARTMENT
To check if Bar Harbor Fire Department is currently hiring, please go to the town’s jobs page.
But even if it isn’t, you can become a call member
Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

HEALTHY ACADIA!
Healthy Acadia and Ellsworth Adult Education Collaborate to Host Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
Ellsworth, Maine — In an effort to address the critical issue of suicide prevention within the community, Healthy Acadia is partnering with Ellsworth Adult and Community Education to offer Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) sessions. These training sessions, aimed at equipping individuals with the skills to intervene and provide support to those experiencing thoughts of suicide, will be held on September 28 and 29, 2023.
The ASIST training sessions will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints community room, 130 Beechland Road, Ellsworth, Maine. The training will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days, and participants will be guided through an evidence-based curriculum developed by Living Works Education. Focusing on effective intervention strategies, the program will instruct attendees on the safe engagement of individuals grappling with suicidal thoughts, helping them find immediate safety and access community-based resources and assistance.
Participants will gain insights into using language that does not reinforce stigma surrounding suicide-related thoughts or emotions, comprehend the prevalence of such thoughts within the community, and establish connections with available community resources. ASIST training encompasses prevention techniques, educating participants about recognizing warning signs of suicide, and integrating resilience and connectivity to deter suicidal ideation.
"More than a million people have been trained in ASIST to date,” said Tara Young, a certified ASIST trainer and community health coordinator with Healthy Acadia. “Many more are needed to help ensure our communities are doing everything we can to intervene and provide help for people who are having thoughts of suicide."
ASIST training takes a public health approach to address the urgency of suicide prevention. Comparable to CPR training, where individuals from various backgrounds can provide life-saving support, ASIST is designed with similar adaptability. It caters to youth aged 16 and above, educators, medical professionals, mental health experts, parents, and anyone interested in making a difference.
"We have presented this training for more than ten years,” noted Young. “Every time we've held an ASIST class, at least one participant tells us that they used what they learned to help a friend, co-worker, or family member and that the person they helped told them, 'You saved my life.'"
The registration fee for the training is $50, which covers all training materials and lunch for both days. The fee will be waived if cost is a barrier to attendance. Participants seeking professional development opportunities can earn 15 Continuing Education Units (CEUs), while students may accrue community service hours towards graduation.
For more information and to register for the ASIST training, interested individuals can visit the Healthy Acadia website or contact Ellsworth Adult Education.
For more information, please contact Tara Young at 812-2090 or email tara@healthyacadia.org. To register, go to https://ellsworth.coursestorm.com/course/applied-suicide-intervention-skills-training-asist4/a31d4c7c2a5f11ee83720a43100e1467

Don’t Get Me Started - Eddie Adelman
Please join us at the Jesup Memorial Library for an author talk with Eddie Adelman who will be discussing his book Don’t get me Started on Thursday, September 21st at 6 pm.
Laughter seems to be in short supply these days. Pandemics, politics and pettiness have all contributed to the shortage. But help is on the way. Don’t get me Started to the rescue.
This collection of 35 mostly humorous essays will take you on a whimsical joyride that satirizes everyday topics like cell phones, junk food, social media, politics, mission statements, home ownership, aging rock stars, computers, allergies, clueless drivers, and (grr) being put on hold.
If you’re looking for a book that you can pick up anytime, turn to any page and just feel good, this one has your name on it. After all we’ve been through lately, don’t we deserve a good laugh?
Don’t Get me Started is perfect as a coffee table book - or on your nightstand when you just need something light to ease you off to sleep. But wait – there’s more! Four short one act plays with characters so real, you’ll feel like you’ve known them all your life. So whadya’ say? Ready to get started on Don’t Get me Started?
Eddie Adelman is an AP Award winning essayist whose columns and essays have appeared in the Portland Press Herald, the Bangor Daily News and on Maine Public Radio since 1998. Eddie also writes short plays, four of which are included in this book. His plays have been produced in Los Angeles, Portland and Belfast, Maine.
This event is a hybrid program and registration is required to attend either in person or on Zoom. Register at jesuplibrary.org/events/adelman or email eventsignup@jesuplibrary.org.
MICHAEL LEONARD TEACHES YOU TO MAKE YOUR BEST SHOT
BAR HARBOR_ Please join us at the Jesup Memorial Library for an evening with professional photographer Michael Leonard on Saturday, September 23rd from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for the program, “Make your Best Shot.” He will share his years of experience in providing useful techniques for taking and then editing your photos.
Michael has been promoting Maine photography for years and teaches workshops and leads photography field trips through his company Photo Tourism by Mike. This program is being held in conjunction with a 20- Lighthouse Photography Tour sailing from Bar Harbor on Sunday, September 24th, in which Michael will be an expert guide. Michael leads the Southern Maine Adobe Photoshop User Group and over the past 16 years has attended 15 Photoshop World Training conventions and numerous Adobe classes. He worked for over 36 years in television production and engineering, mostly in the Portland area.
He has been taking pictures for more than 40 years and among his favorite subjects to shoot are nighttime scenes including lightning and the Aurora; in the daytime, he likes shooting landscapes, seascapes, lighthouses, and schooners. His work has been featured in many publications including books, magazines, annual reports, brochures, textbooks, and nationally on the Weather Channel.
Jesup Memorial Library director, Matt DeLaney commented, “We are very pleased to host Mr. Leonard again as we know photographic images loom large in so many of the publications and books that Jesup has available to our community and there is a real thirst for knowledge for taking great pictures of the scenery in Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, and beyond.”
“I believe photography can be a hobby or vocation that can be enjoyed by anyone at any age,” states Michael. “Maine is an incredible place for photography as it is rich in beautiful scenery, nature and wildlife.” His “Best Shot” program begins with a stunning slide show of some of his finest images. He will then cover the basics - like formatting memory cards, exposure, white balance, depth of field, and the importance of capturing images in Raw.
Michael has been praised for making the complex understandable and this presentation aims to have the audience leave with ideas they can directly apply to start making better pictures. Many more people are taking pictures using their cell phone cameras to enrich their lives. Michael will provide free apps and easy settings that can assist everyone in taking and making better pictures on their cell phones.
This event is a hybrid program and registration is required to attend either in person or on Zoom. Register at jesuplibrary.org/events/bestshot or email eventsignup@jesuplibrary.org. To explore Michael’s work and events please visit www.phototourismbymike.com. To learn more about the 20-Lighthouse Photography Tour that will cover 156 miles leaving from Bar Harbor on September 24th at 8:30 a.m. please contact Zack Klyver at 207-460-9575 or email mainecoastlights@gmail.com.
WRITE ON!!!
Please join us at the Jesup Memorial Library for a program with Write On! - Authors Share Their Works on Thursday, September 28th at 7 pm.
Jesup Memorial Library's Write On! group has been meeting, in person and remotely, on Saturday mornings since 2014. Attendees share group leadership, bringing manuscripts of fiction, memoir, poetry, and just about anything else for individualized feedback, and in turn offering feedback for others. Join them to hear more about their work and find out how to become a member.
Read on to find out more about the writers!
Carol Woolman published her first story about a rafting trip in the Arctic that changed her life. In 2013 she self-published a book for the Library of Congress Veterans History Project about her father that is both a family history and a WWII memoir. Her current work, Ecology of Grief, A Mother’s Witness, is about living through the violent death of her 25-year-old son Mark Horner. It includes the penetrating and numbing sorrow but also adventure, surprise, mystery and meaning. She feels a sense of urgency to find a publisher for this book.
Steven Roiphe holds a nonrefundable degree from Harvard. His prose has appeared in a number of literary magazines, garnering a Pushcart Prize nomination. He lives with his wife and young son in Lamoine, where he has recently finished writing a novel that follows a rogue deity’s quest to spark justice down through American history; now he’s searching for a book agent to help take his work to the next level. You can follow Steve on Twitter, @StevenRoiphe.
Jackie Campbell wrote her first short story in the 3rd grade and has been writing ever since. She has published some of her work but believes her biggest accomplishment has been balancing work with motherhood while also caring for her parents and a spouse. Jackie currently lives in the Minneapolis area and is hoping to get back to Maine soon. In the meantime, she is focusing on writing a young adult novel about a teen with a father who has dementia.
Before children, Joan FitzGerald was an award-winning financial news reporter. Since children, she has written short stories and essays, and a middle grade, environmental fantasy. She is currently at work on an adult dystopian novel. Joan lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts and has been a summer resident of Mt. Desert Island since birth. The Jesup Writers group has been an essential support for her work. She writes all year ’round but writes best here, on this island in Maine.
Andrew McQuinn got his degree in video production from the New England School of Communications. After graduating he spent six years in Las Vegas, working as a stagehand. He now resides in Bangor where he works as an Ed Tech at a preschool for special needs kids. When he’s not writing, Andrew is spending time with his feline fur baby Marty, Sir Martin if he’s feeling extra dignified. Andrew has several novels in the works he hopes to get published over the next year or two. Playing it out Straight is his debut novel.
Tom Bertrand will also be sharing his writing.
This event is a hybrid program and registration is required to attend either in person or on Zoom. Register at jesuplibrary.org/events/writeon or email eventsignup@jesuplibrary.org.

Film challenges prison food system
A film screening and panel discussion on reforming prison food systems will take place at College of the Atlantic on Monday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. in the Davis Center for Human Ecology, Rm. 202. The free event is held in collaboration with Healthy Acadia.
“Seeds of Change” is the story of Maine organic farmer Mark McBrine as he sets out to transform the way people eat in prison. Filmed over the course of two-years, “Seeds of Change” chronicles the intersecting stories of lifelong farmer McBrine and several incarcerated men as they grow their own food from a five-acre prison garden unlike any other.
In a place where life is routinely defined by shame and despair, good food can be a gateway to meaning, wellness, and dignity, filmmakers state at seedsofchangefilm.com. This is a story about the power of organic agriculture to reform our food systems and change the course of people’s lives.
McBrine, filmmaker Maximilian Armstrong, and a former prisoner who worked with McBrine on the garden while incarcerated will join in a panel discussion following the screening of the half-hour film.
