PUBLIC FORUM ON PROPOSED LAND USE AMENDMENTS THIS WEEK!
On The Agenda - Bar Harbor Town Meetings, Events, & Things to Do
ON THE AGENDA
Every week we document Bar Harbor town government, school, and other similar meetings that we know of. Please let us know if we’ve missed something. Also, sometimes things are on the town calendars and are cancelled or rescheduled, so make sure to double check before you head over!
All the meetings take place at the Bar Harbor Municipal Building at 93 Cottage Street unless otherwise noted. And they usually have a time for public comments. This is not true about executive sessions, which are closed to the public.
So, go! Be informed! Be part of the process. You deserve to be.

GET YOUR KNITTING AND CARE ON FOR OTHERS!
Calling all knitters…or would be knitters! The Welcome and Care Team at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church UCC is starting up a Prayer Shawl Mission Team. Ideally the group would meet every other week for 2 hours to knit Prayer Shawls for those in need due to illness, loneliness, loss or in need of comfort. The intention of the group is to create a flow of Prayer Shawls available for distribution when needed and to establish a working sense of community with those who have a shared interest. The kick-off for this group is Saturday, February 3 at 10 A.M. until noon at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church. Supplies and instruction will be provided to those with skills for knitting and/or crocheting and for those with a desire to learn.
For more information contact Pat by calling (203) 770-0063 or email: pgdizazzo@yahoo.com.
GET YOUR HERO ON!
BAR HARBOR FIRE DEPARTMENT
To check if Bar Harbor Fire Department is currently hiring, please go to the town’s jobs page.
But even if it isn’t, you can become a call member
Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.
GET YOUR SCIENCE CAFE ON!
MDI Science Café: A Traffic Cop for Genes and Disease
February 12, 2024 I 5 PM I On Zoom
MDI Bio Lab investigator Halyna Shcherbata, Ph.D., is an expert in how the genetic code is properly translated into useful proteins, or misdirected in ways that can lead to diseases such as attention-deficit disorder, autism and diabetes.
Shcherbata focuses on the gate-keeping role played by microRNAs, molecules that regulate how genes are expressed during many important cellular activities, such as development or the immune response. She’s found that dysfunctions in the joint activities of a microRNA called miR-980 and a protein called RBFOX1 are associated with a wide array of human disorders.
And because the fruit fly – Drosophila melanogaster – shares a similar set of genes and proteins with humans, she is pioneering powerful new methodologies and laboratory tools to use the tiny insect as a model for our disorders.
“I am using Drosophila to understand the molecular mechanisms of stress, aging, and neuromuscular disorders at the very, very precise level of molecules,” she says. “The Rbfox1 protein is even more complicated than we thought, and for me it’s mind-blowing that one protein can be so versatile. All this stuff is totally new.”
A native of Ukraine, Shcherbata earned her Ph.D. at the Lviv National University of Ivan Franko in 1996. Since then, she’s held positions at the University of Washington, the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, and most recently at Hannover Medical School. She joined MDI Bio Lab’s faculty last year.
What Are Science Cafés?
MDI Bio Lab’s Science Cafés provide an informal introduction to ground-breaking biomedical research by its scientists, scholars from near and far and from local experts in other fields as well. Each Café lasts about one hour; the floor is open for questions and discussion. It can get lively and it’s always engaging. MDI Science Cafés are open to the public and free of charge. Embark on a Healthful New Year Journey with Tai Chi
For many, the new year brings a fresh commitment to incorporating more activities that support our overall health and well-being. Healthy Acadia wants to help more community members discover the many health benefits of tai chi practice.
A low-impact exercise that combines slow, fluid movements, mindful breathing, and mental focus, tai chi is often referred to as a moving meditation because it emphasizes the integration of mind and body, improves overall physical and mental well-being, and promotes a sense of calm and relaxation for people of all ages and fitness levels. Regular tai chi practice has been associated with numerous health benefits, including improved balance and flexibility, reduced stress and anxiety, lowered blood pressure, improved immune function, relief of chronic pain and inflammatory conditions, and improved cognitive function.
Healthy Acadia’s tai chi instructors are certified through the Tai Chi for Health Institute, founded in 2010 by Dr. Paul Lam and colleagues to empower people to improve their health and wellness with Tai Chi for Health classes. Tai Chi for Health classes introduce participants to gentle low-impact exercise routines that promote improved health by integrating both mind and body. The program is recommended by both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Council on Aging and endorsed by governmental health departments around the world.

Are you or is someone you know a young person interested in digging their hands into community-driven climate solutions through a paid internship this summer? ACTT will once again host part- and full-time internships for young people ages 17 and older. Interns will work closely with ACTT staff on a variety of projects and we seek to align the work with each intern's specific areas of interest. There is also ample opportunity for interns to propose, design, and implement their own projects through the course of their internship.
The number of paid internships available is limited, as we attempt to maintain a high quality experience through mentorship and supervision and as we seek to compensate interns competitively. If you or someone you know is interested in joining our team during the summer of 2024, please reach out to Executive Director Johannah Blackman at johannah@aclimatetothrive.org to begin the application process.

AUTHOR TALK WITH DAVID FLORIG, THE STONES OF AILSA CRAIG
February 1 at 7 p.m.
Jesup Memorial Library is thrilled to host an Author Talk with David Florig, featuring his debut novel, "The Stones of Ailsa Craig," on Thursday, February 1st, at 7 pm.
David Florig, a member of the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance and past-president of the Pine Tree Curling Club in Portland, will take the audience on a captivating journey into the world of his historical fiction novel. Set in present-day Belfast, Maine, and 1880s Scotland, the narrative is centered around the intriguing sport of curling. Florig's work has gained recognition, being named a Category Finalist by the 2023 American Writing Awards.
Ever been curious about the mysteries of curling? Join us as David Florig unravels the secrets behind the ice, the stone, and the broom that have captivated millions and earned a place in the Olympics. The Stones of Ailsa Craig is not just a sports novel but a compelling story that will appeal to fans of historical fiction and mysteries alike.
The event promises an engaging evening with readings, a unique curling stone crafted from 60-million-year-old granite, a Q&A session, and an opportunity for attendees to have their books signed by the author.

Author talk with Cynthia Thayer, We’re Going Home: A True Story of Life and Death
February 8 at 7 p.m.
Step into the world of resilience and love as we invite you to the Jesup for an author talk with Cynthia Thayer about her new book "We’re Going Home: A True Story of Life and Death." Join us as she unveils the remarkable journey of an unlikely couple, Bill and Cynthia Thayer, who, despite their urban upbringing and lack of farming knowledge, successfully built and sustained an organic farm in Maine for over forty years.
In her poignant discussion, Cynthia will delve into the challenges and triumphs of their unconventional life, exploring the profound impact of a tragic accident that befell Bill while working in their woodlot. "We’re Going Home" not only captures the aftermath of this life-altering event but also intertwines memories of their enduring love story, from their initial encounter to the heartfelt farewell.
Cynthia Thayer's narrative is a solace for those who have experienced loss, a guide for those navigating grief, and an exploration of the essence of a fulfilling marriage.
Cynthia Underwood Thayer is a distinguished author and accomplished spinner, whose roots in New York City and Nova Scotia have found a meaningful home in the heart of Maine on Darthia Farm.
Copies of Cynthia’s book will be for sale, thanks to our partners at Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Store. All sales benefit the Jesup.
Free and open to the public. Register at https://www.jesuplibrary.org/events/cynthia

WORLD WETLANDS DAY
Friday, February 2nd, is World Wetlands Day.
Wetlands are ecosystems where water is the primary factor controlling the environment and the associated plant and animal life. This includes both freshwater, marine, and coastal ecosystems such as lakes and rivers, underground aquifers, swamps and marshes, wet grasslands, peatlands, oases, estuaries, deltas, tidal flats, mangroves and other coastal areas, and coral reefs.
These lands are critical to people and nature, given these ecosystems' intrinsic value, benefits, and services. Wetlands are among the ecosystems with the highest decline, loss, and degradation rates, are disappearing three times faster than forests, and are Earth’s most threatened ecosystem.
While things are dire, they're not without hope. Often the best options are to make small, personal changes to lessen your impact on the environment, educate yourself, write to your local representatives, and find strength and resilience in time spent in the wetlands we still can enjoy and protect.
To learn more, visit The Naturalist's Notebook. All wetlands-related titles will be 25% off on World Wetlands Day, and we'll have coloring activities (for all ages because you're never too old to color).
