GET YOUR HERO ON!
To check if Bar Harbor Fire Department is currently hiring, please go to the town’s jobs page.
But even if it isn’t, you can become a call member
Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

GET YOUR TRACKING ON!
Beginner and Family Winter Tracking Workshop
Have you ever asked yourself questions like "Who left that track?" Can you tell the difference between a dog and a cat track?
If you are curious about the natural world, wildlife tracking may open a window into new ways of seeing. Join us for a morning of reading the earth as we explore the mysteries left behind by wildlife on the coast of Maine. We will cover the track and sign identification process, as well as a bit of track patterns and interpretation. This event is geared toward beginners and families.
We’ll have a slow pace and affirmation that no question is too basic!
We will meet at The Naturalist’s Notebook at 9:00 a.m. to reference a selection of our favorite track and sign books and view a short presentation from Kareem with images of what we may encounter. We’ll depart for our excursion at 10 a.m. and meet in the upper parking lot at Land and Garden Preserve’s Little Long Pond. We’ll journey to the pond’s edge in search for signs of wildlife. The excursion will last two hours, and afterward there will be an optional meet back at The Naturalist’s Notebook to debrief. Participants should dress for the weather, wear ice-grippers, and bring water. We will be outside for two or more hours consecutively.
A notebook is optional but encouraged.
Workshop leader Kareem A. Dieng is an avid naturalist, registered Maine Guide, wilderness first responder, and holds a Track and Sign level 1 certification from CyberTracker Conservation. Kareem also owns Rising Sun Adventure, a local guide service here on Mount Desert Island. Registration includes a copy of “Local Tracks of North America: Quick Guide to Commonly Seen Tracks and Scats” pocket guide to track identification.

Author Cathie Pelletier "Northeaster: A Story of Courage and Survival in the Blizzard of 1952"
“Northeaster: A Story of Courage and Survival in the Blizzard of 1952”, is a vivid and gripping story of an epic Maine snowstorm that tested the very limits of human endurance. It weaves together a rich cast of characters whose lives were uprooted and endangered by the storm. Housewives and lobstermen, loggers and soldiers were all trapped as snow piled in drifts twenty feet high. The storm smothered hundreds of travelers in their cars, covered entire towns, and broke ships in half. In the midst of the blizzard’s chaos, there were remarkable acts of heroism and courageous generosity. Doctors braved the storm to help deliver babies. Ordinary people kept their wits while buried in their cars, and others made their way out of forests to find kind-hearted strangers willing to take them in.
Cathie Pelletier was born and raised on the banks of the St. John River, at the end of the road in Northern Maine. She is the author of twelve novels, including The Funeral Makers (a New York Times Notable Book), The Weight of Winter (winner of the New England Book Award) and Running the Bulls (winner of the Paterson Prize for Fiction). As K. C. McKinnon, she has written two novels, both of which became television films.
Books will be available for sale and signing courtesy of Sherman’s Books and Stationary.

CREATING DIGITAL ART WITH MICROSOFT WORD: AN INTRODUCTION
Microsoft Word may be the most popular word-processing program, but it’s useful for more than just words and text. Fact is, Word is also a surprisingly remarkable tool for visual artists. I’ll show you how to access and utilize the graphics tools hidden behind the façade of the Word interface. As a result, you will be able to create digital art inspired by your own vision and capabilities. And, because Word is approachable and relatively easy to use, you don’t need to study intimidating (and expensive) graphics programs such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop, etc., to create interesting, imaginative, and beautiful digital art.
Requirements: Computer/laptop (PC or Mac) with Microsoft Word and a mouse, trackpad, or digital drawing pen.
The Word program does NOT need to be “pro,” or even the latest edition. image.png
Very Short Bio: I was born in Brooklyn, New York toward the middle of the last century, and I've held a camera in my hand for as long as I can remember. Over the decades, the cameras may have changed, but my passion for tinkering with moving images hasn't. I LOVE it. And I intend to keep doing it!
