GET YOUR HERO ON!
To check if Bar Harbor Fire Department is currently hiring, please go to the town’s jobs page.
But even if it isn’t, you can become a call member
Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

Get Your Knowledge and Treasure Hunt On!
DIRIGO TREASURES
Next Thursday, March 23, at 7 p.m., the Jesup Memorial Library will host a conversation with Kurt and Kelly Stokes of Dirigo Treasures Maine.
Is it possible, in the 21st century, to design and successfully execute a real-world $20,000 treasure hunt experience in celebration of Maine’s 200th anniversary? What are the challenges? What are the opportunities? What are the limitations? And what are the joys of doing so?
Kurt and Kelly Stokes will discuss Dirigo Treasures Maine, their $20,000 treasure hunt card game launched in December 2020. They will share stories of its creation, how it came into being, the successes, the unexpected challenges, and some thoughtful must-do advice for future treasure hunt designers. The Stokeses will also answer questions about the game, relay the current status of the treasure hunt for the now 3,500+ players participating, and perhaps share a very special hint as to exactly where Maine’s $20,000 Dirigo Treasure may be found!
Kurt and Kelly Stokes are owners of Dirigo Treasures, LLC, based in Newcastle, Maine. They have lived and traveled extensively in Maine for nearly thirty years. Puzzle and riddle enthusiasts, they have always had a fascination in their spare time with exploring the possibilities of attempting difficult projects which challenge the mind with their complexity, and also the heart with their potential to give back in part to the community. Kelly, a life-long educator, is currently the director of special services at AOS93 in Damariscotta. Kurt, an INTJ personality by nature, currently works as a grants and contracts manager for the University of Maine System. They share a 23-year-old son John, as well as a charmingly spunky senior cat named “Little Girl.”
This event is a hybrid program and registration is required to attend either in person or on Zoom. Register at jesuplibrary.org/events/dirigotreasures or email eventsignup@jesuplibrary.org.

Want support for your craft? The Write On! writer’s group has been meeting at the Jesup since 2014, and remotely during the pandemic. Each meeting, members may bring in up to 1200 words to read for feedback, and in turn offer feedback to others. Although each member doesn’t get to read work every time, the group shares the time fairly. The group meets on Zoom, and hold in confidence what is shared. This group welcomes adults 18 and up writing in many genres. There’s no homework–the only commitment is two hours on Saturday mornings.

Linda Buckmaster - Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands
In Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands, Linda Buckmaster follows the call of the elements—rock, sea, sky, wind. Elemental is the first installment in a series of creative and eclectic responses to the beauty and realities of islands in Maine, Newfoundland, and northwest Scotland. Through essay, poetry, and fiction, Linda traces the imprint of the lowly salt cod over time in communities across the North Atlantic and the Caribbean. The book is beautifully designed throughout by Graphic Artist Lori Harley in Portland. Previously an editor for National Fisherman magazine and former Poet Laureate of Belfast, Linda knits fact and lyric into her narrative net.
Linda Buckmaster has lived within a block of the Atlantic most of her life, growing up in Florida and living in midcoast Maine for fifty years. She has an MFA from the University of Southern Maine. Her poetry, essay, and fiction have appeared in over forty journals. She has held residencies at Vermont Studios Center, Atlantic Center for the Arts, and Obras Foundation among others. Two of her pieces have been listed as Notable Essays in Best American Essays 2013 and 2020. Her hybrid memoir, Space Heart: A Memoir in Stages, was published by Burrow Press in 2018. Her latest hybrid, Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands (Huntress Press, 2022), is the first installment of a multimedia North Atlantic Rim Project.

READING WITH WINGS: DAVID GEORGE HASKELL-SOUNDS WILD AND BROKEN
The Wendell Gilley Museum and the Southwest Harbor Public Library are giving away free copies of “Sounds Wild and Broken: Sonic Marvels, Evolution’s Creativity, and The Crisis Of Sensory Extinction,” just in time for the March 21 online program with its author David George Haskell.
The book starts with the origins of animal song and traverses the whole arc of Earth's history to explore the emergence, diversification, and loss of the sounds of our world, including human music and language. In a starred review, Kirkus called it “A joyous celebration of the music of life… Sparkling prose conveys an urgent message.” And Cynthia Barnett, reviewing for the New York Times, write “Sounds Wild and Broken’ affirms Haskell as a laureate for the earth … a glorious guide to the miracle of life’s sound.”
The book was longlisted for the PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award and was an editor’s choice in the New York Times Book Review.
This is the second installment of Reading with Wings, the Gilley's new author collaboration with the Southwest Harbor Public Library. Join the directors of the Library and the Gilley for a wide-ranging conversation with the author, who will talk about his research, his books, and more. The program is online on Tuesday, March 21 and starts at 5:30 p.m. Registration is required at www.wendellgilleymuseum.org/calendar.
“Reading with Wings is a wonderful addition to our collaboration with the Southwest Harbor Public Library,” says museum director Sean Charette. “It perfectly suits the Gilley’s mission of bringing people closer to nature through art, and allows both organizations to do more – and bring unique programs to more people – by working together.”

Pysanky with Liz Cutler-After School Program
At ArtWaves Kaleidoscope studio, the table is set with candles, beeswax, local eggs, kistkas, vibrantly colored dyes and we all step by step instructions. I began this with my children and their friends decades ago and the tradition continues. We will be using the same tools and methods that have been used for hundreds of years. Gather with family or friends to batik - dipping in dyes and applying warm wax over the areas you want to keep, to make colorful elaborate designs. Try out the electric version of a kistka, or combine techniques. Follow traditional patterns, or create your own designs!

Rediscovering the Collective Body: Improvisational Forms
Beginning with the proposition that we are already inherently connected, we will use improvisational movement structures to deepen our understanding of how this connection can affect and be affected by our bodies––how we interact and inform, share and navigate space, create ecologies of movement.
Instructor Bio: thorne weaver pronouns they/agma: I am a white nonbinary transdisciplinary artist and teacher from unceded Peskotomuhkate (“Passamaquoddy”) and Panewapskek (“Penobscot”) land. my current research engages self as nexus and gravity as consciousness––how we can cultivate a movement practice that is gentle, sustainable, kind, and ecologically informed? how does movement and our experience thereof change when we appreciate our fundamental nature as congealed expressions of gravity and energy? pulling from linguistics, cognitive science, chemistry, holistic herbalism, metaphysics, and various movement techniques, i aim to demonstrate and illuminate connectivity, and move towards a verbal way of living, rather than a nominal one. i am grateful to have learned from such considerate movers as Ishmael Houston-Jones, Miguel Gutierrez, Susan Sgorbati, Kieth Hennessey, Tommy DeFrantz, Deborah Black, Kathleen Hermesdorf, Cassils, and many others. my practice is heavily informed by my chronic illness, queerness, and neurodivergence, and is deeply rooted in healing through anti-colonialism and reindigenisation.
