Family Climbing Night At Camp Beech Cliff
For novices or experienced climbers, our indoor 30-foot wall provides an instructional and exciting experience. Our programs are designed for a variety of ages and include equipment (harnesses and helmets) and belay instruction from trained staff. Children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Pizza and healthy snacks will be available for sale. In addition to climbing, the gym is open, and recreation equipment will be available to be used by all participants.

Mount Desert Island Racial Equity Working Group Conversation on Racial Injustice and Birthing
This event is a virtual program with the option of viewing it virtually in person at the Jesup and registration is required to attend either in person or on Zoom.
Please join the Mount Desert Island Racial Equity Working Group for a conversation on the history and current issues surrounding racial injustice and birthing as experienced by Black, Indigenous and People of Color and rural populations here in Maine. Through presentation and panel discussion with healthcare providers and users, we will examine, listen to, and learn about how those most historically disenfranchised and discriminated against experience pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care here in Maine. There will be time for audience questions and participation. We will hear from healthcare providers from Maine as well as a provider from Serene Journey Doulas.
Bios
Linda Robinson is a nurse-midwife in Bar Harbor, Maine where she was one of the founders of the Women’s Health Center in 1993. She worked in a women’s health practice for thirty-five years, caring for women in all walks of life. Her international work has taken her to Malawi Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer; to American Samoa where she started the first midwifery practice; and to the Democratic Republic of Congo with Doctors without Borders. She is the author of Sunday Morning Shamwana, A Midwife’s Letters From the Field, and has co-authored two other books, Being Pregnant, A Woman’s Answer Book, and Women’s Sexual Health. From 2016-2019 she worked in Malawi with the Global Health Service Partnership teaching midwifery at the Kamuzu College of Nursing, and has applied for a Fulbright Grant to continue that work in 2024. Linda is the mother of five children and has lived on MDI since 1992.
My name is Theresa Daniels-Hemphill, I'm the spouse to an active duty member of the US Coast Guard, currently stationed in Puerto Rico where I serve as an ombudsman to my wife's cutter. I'm a biracial mother of two girls, the youngest of whom was born while stationed in Maine in 2021. My experience with birth care there was a catalyst for my desire to pursue a path into midwifery and another avenue to continue my activism and advocacy for POC.
Donna Smith has served her community for over six years as a fertility specialist, a birth doula and a postpartum doula witnessing over fifty births. Donna's own birth trauma is what led her to this work where she gives her clients trauma informed plans of care. Donna received her Bachelors of Neuroscience from George Mason University, in Fairfax VA where she currently resides and was trained by the prominent Black midwife, Shafia Monroe, with the International Center for Traditional Childbearing (ICTC). The major focus of Donna's work is to help combat poor maternal health occurrences in Black and Brown communities through advocacy and education. Donna is also certified in Reiki for birth workers and Crystal Therapy.

"A Wildlife Sanctuary at Blue Hill Falls"
The Bar Harbor Garden Club is pleased to present “A Wildlife Sanctuary at Blue Hill Falls” with Zachary Holderby, vice president of Downeast Audubon, on March 9 at 1 p.m. at Birch Bay Retirement Village, 25 Village Inn Road, Bar Harbor. Holderby is a leading wildlife ecologist and bird naturalist. He is spearheading an effort to recognize and protect Blue Hill “Reversing” Falls, an exceptional place not found in many other locations around the world. Holderby will discuss why conservation of Blue Hill Falls is so critical to protecting the distinctive diversity, habitat, and refuge of Maine’s marine life and rare birds, like scoters, harlequin ducks and purple sandpipers. There are the eight “tidal” or “reversing” falls in Maine, where rivers and bays make a narrow passage to meet the sea. These unique places flow backward and then forward in an ever-changing diorama of freshwater, saltwater, rollicking rapids and tranquil calms. The iconic Blue Hill “Reversing” Falls formed when a Salt Pond connected to Blue Hill Bay. This special place is now a popular spot for kayak surfers, duck hunters, and commercial harvesters. Such frequency of use by visitors has caused significant disturbance and negative impacts to wildlife and the surrounding ecology. Holderby will discuss what is being done NOW to protect and conserve this treasured natural resource. Originally from Washington, Holderby obtained a BS in Wildlife Ecology from Washington State University and an MS in Wildlife Ecology from Texas State University, with a master's thesis on reddish egrets. He has worked as a wildlife technician across the world on many species and for the National Park Service in the Channel Islands. Currently he works with the Maine Bird Atlas and Breeding Bird Survey, as a kayak guide at Stonington Paddle and a substitute teacher. He is currently fulfilling his mission to recognize and protect the unique habitat and species present at Blue Hill Falls. The talk will begin at 1 p.m. for one hour, including ample time for questions. The speaker will be followed a Bar Harbor Garden Club business meeting and light refreshments. All are welcome to join the speaker presentation and club meeting. This presentation is one of the monthly programs offered by the Bar Harbor Garden Club to the public.

Please register early, as there is a limited capacity of 40 for the in-person meeting at Birch Bay Village due to COVID-19 protocols.

VIRTUAL WRITE ON! WRITING GROUP
Want support for your craft? The Write On! writer’s group has been meeting at the Jesup since 2014, and remotely during the pandemic. Each meeting, members may bring in up to 1200 words to read for feedback, and in turn offer feedback to others. Although each member doesn’t get to read work every time, the group shares the time fairly. The group meets on Zoom, and hold in confidence what is shared. This group welcomes adults 18 and up writing in many genres. There’s no homework–the only commitment is two hours on Saturday mornings.

Jesup Book Discussion "Good and Mad: The Revolutionary Power of Women's Anger"
In honor of Women’s History Month we will be holding a book discussion. We will discuss the title “Good and Mad: The Revolutionary Power of Women’s Anger” by Rebecca Traister.
With eloquence and fervor, Rebecca tracks the history of female anger as political fuel—from suffragettes marching on the White House to office workers vacating their buildings after Clarence Thomas was confirmed to the Supreme Court. Here Traister explores women’s anger at both men and other women; anger between ideological allies and foes; the varied ways anger is perceived based on its owner; as well as the history of caricaturing and delegitimizing female anger; and the way women’s collective fury has become transformative political fuel—as is most certainly occurring today. She deconstructs society’s (and the media’s) condemnation of female emotion (notably, rage) and the impact of their resulting repercussions.
Rebecca Traister is writer at large for New York magazine and a contributing editor at Elle. A National Magazine Award finalist, she has written about women in politics, media, and entertainment from a feminist perspective for The New Republic and Salon and has also contributed to The Nation, The New York Observer, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vogue, Glamour and Marie Claire. She is the author of All the Single Ladies and the award-winning Big Girls Don’t Cry.

Knitting Skills Workshop
Join Susan Dewey. She will be showing you a variety of strategies manipulating stitches and giving you time to practice and fine tune the skills. These strategies will allow you to make choices in how to follow patterns and make adjustments in your own knitting. As a class you may want to choose a common project for you all to work on, to help support each other. Skills to have before starting: Knit, purl, cast on (you can get yourself started knitting), bind off (you can finish) Materials: 1 3.5oz (100gm) skein of worsted or DK weight yarn tonal or solid color Several small amounts 1oz (10-20gm) of other colors of yarn Circular needles to match the yarn you choose (generally US #6-#8) Removable stitch markers Susan will bring some of the above materials but it’s always a good idea to have your own! ArtWaves is hosting a Fun and Funky Line Dance Class on Mondays in March. No partner? No problem! Line dancing is a great way to have fun while dancing with others in a group. ArtWaves is hosting an adult beginner hip-hop dance class on Tuesdays in March. Classes will have a structure of warmup, cardio through dance, ab work, stretching, and then we will work on learning a short dance combination that we will do all four weeks. GET YOUR FUTURITY ON!
What do computers, the Civil War, a utopian world and rock music have in common? That question will soon be answered on stage in Bar Harbor, where the avant-Americana musical "Futurity" will be performed live at College of the Atlantic's Thomas S. Gates Jr. Community Center.
Shows run Friday, March 10 through Sunday, March 12 with a nightly show at 7 p.m., along with a 1 p.m. matinee on Sunday, March 12.
Admission is free but reservations are required and can be made at futuritycoa.brownpapertickets.com.
Masks are required and will be available for all performances.
