But even if it isn’t, you can become a call member
Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

Linda Buckmaster - Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands
In Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands, Linda Buckmaster follows the call of the elements—rock, sea, sky, wind. Elemental is the first installment in a series of creative and eclectic responses to the beauty and realities of islands in Maine, Newfoundland, and northwest Scotland. Through essay, poetry, and fiction, Linda traces the imprint of the lowly salt cod over time in communities across the North Atlantic and the Caribbean. The book is beautifully designed throughout by Graphic Artist Lori Harley in Portland. Previously an editor for National Fisherman magazine and former Poet Laureate of Belfast, Linda knits fact and lyric into her narrative net.
Linda Buckmaster has lived within a block of the Atlantic most of her life, growing up in Florida and living in midcoast Maine for fifty years. She has an MFA from the University of Southern Maine. Her poetry, essay, and fiction have appeared in over forty journals. She has held residencies at Vermont Studios Center, Atlantic Center for the Arts, and Obras Foundation among others. Two of her pieces have been listed as Notable Essays in Best American Essays 2013 and 2020. Her hybrid memoir, Space Heart: A Memoir in Stages, was published by Burrow Press in 2018. Her latest hybrid, Elemental: A Miscellany of Salt Cod and Islands (Huntress Press, 2022), is the first installment of a multimedia North Atlantic Rim Project.
This event is a hybrid program and registration is required to attend either in person or on Zoom. Register at jesuplibrary.org/events/buckmaster or email

REBUILDING POLITICS - AUTHOR TALK
Please join us at the Jesup Memorial Library for an author talk with Chloe Maxim who will be discussing her book “Dirt Road Revival: How to Rebuild Rural Politics and Why Our Future Depends on It.” on Thursday, April 6th at 7 p.m.
Chloe Maxim was the first Democrat to ever win Maine House District 88 in 2018. She went on to unseat the highest-ranking Republican in Maine—the Senate Minority leader—in 2020, making her the youngest woman Senator in Maine’s history. An unapologetic progressive and at the time a recent college graduate, Maxim was running in the rural conservative county where she grew up. The story gained national headlines at a time when America’s electorate is seen as deeply polarized. Now, with her campaign manager Canyon Woodard, she shares what they learned running the campaign and how what they learned can change how we view rural America.
“Everyone judges what my house looks like. They don’t bother to knock. I’m grateful that you came. I’m going to vote for you.” Those words, spoken by a rural Maine voter to Maxim during her campaign for State Senator, reflect how she shocked the political world by tapping into a reservoir of previously discounted voters in deep red America. During the campaign, Maxim and Woodard saw how politics and the Democratic Party have focused for too long on the interests of elite leaders and big donors, abandoning the concerns of rural America. In “Dirt Road Revival” Maxim and Woodward detail just how everyday Americans have been left behind. Then, they tell the story of their success and distill their experiences into concrete lessons that can be applied to rural districts across the country to build power from the state and local levels.
Maxmin received an honors degree from Harvard College, where she co-founded Divest Harvard. She is the recipient of the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes and the Brower Youth Award. She was also named a “Green Hero” by Rolling Stone and the 2020 Legislator of the Year by the Maine Council on Aging. Woodard was born, raised, and homeschooled in the Appalachian Mountains of rural North Carolina and the North Cascades of Washington. He earned an honors degree in social studies from Harvard College, where the bulk of his education took place outside of the classroom co-coordinating (with Maxmin) Divest Harvard, a more than 70,000-person movement that succeeded in pressuring Harvard to divest its $53 billion endowment from fossil fuels.
This event is a virtual program with the option of viewing it virtually in person at the Jesup and registration is required to attend either in person or on Zoom. Please register at jesuplibrary.org/events/dirtroad or email eventsignup@jesuplibrary.org.

Pysanky with Liz Cutler-Family Session
Here's your time to learn the art of pysanky, Ukrainian egg decorating. At ArtWaves Kaleidoscope studio, the table is set with candles, beeswax, local eggs, kistkas, vibrantly colored dyes and we all step by step instructions. I began this with my children and their friends decades ago and the tradition continues. We will be using the same tools and methods that have been used for hundreds of years. Gather with family or friends to batik - dipping in dyes and applying warm wax over the areas you want to keep, to make colorful elaborate designs. Try out the electric version of a kistka, or combine techniques. Follow traditional patterns, or create your own designs! Fun for both kids and adults, although younger kids will need adult supervision.
