But even if it isnโt, you can become a call member
Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

GET YOUR SCIENCE ON!
MDIBL presents Virtual MDI Science Cafe with Clifford Rosen, M.D.
What impact does access to clinical research have on the health of those living in rural communities? That is one question Clifford J. Rosen, M.D. is striving to answer as he seeks to address health equity and disparities encountered by at-risk populations. Dr. Rosen, along with the Northern New England Clinical & Translational Research Network (NNE-CTR), collaborated to establish a set of research cores to support clinical and translational research in Northern New England, with one focus being the engagement of rural providers and practices in research. Some of the pilot projects that researchers developed, such as using telemedicine to quickly identify newborns at rural hospitals who need treatment with therapeutic hypothermia, have now become standards of care in Maine.
โIn just a few years, we are seeing the impact that access to clinical research has on rural communities,โ Dr. Rosen said.
Once the COVID-19 pandemic became a threat to health throughout the region, the NNE-CTR also supported the NIH-funded RECOVER study of long COVID, a study of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, as well as the National COVID Cohort Collaborative registry that shares clinical data as a part of national COVID research. Join us online for our first Science Cafรฉ of 2023 on January 9 at 5:00 pm to hear more about Dr. Rosenโs goal to promote health equality and improve access to care across all of Maineโs communities.

From the work of this committee, the event evolved into the Acadia Birding Festival, currently in its 24 th ย year.ย He has over 35 yearsโ experience studying the birds of North America and brings a wealth of knowledge about Neotropical migrants and the avifauna of the Eastern United States.ย
Michaelย spent many years studying numerous aspects of the Gulf of Maine while employed at the Marine Biological Laboratory and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. In his spare time, he maintains Three Pines Bird Sanctuary in Town Hill, Maine, studying micro-habitat of Neotropical migratory birds on Mount Desert Island, Maine and winter ecology in various Neotropical countries like Cuba, when given the opportunity. Author Talk: "Finding Myself in Aviation" by Mary S. Build
Once Mary earned her pilot certificate, there was no stopping her.ย She began flying scenic flights, ran a very successful flight training operation teaching hundreds of pilots to safely fly from the water, and shared her love of aviation with them. She also became an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner, flew to Alaska from Maine four times, as well as competed in the Air Race Classic, and exhibited her airplane at the worldโs largest gathering, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.
Mary writes, โI never expected that surviving an overturned seaplane and almost drowning would be a turning point in my original desire to be a seaplane charter pilot before I even had a pilotโs license. Or that those clouds dropping down on me in the middle of mountainous terrain on one of my trips to Alaska would make me a stronger person.โ
Many told Mary that her journey to discovering flight inspired them to go after their own dreams, whether it was like hers, learning to fly, or their own, such as running for elected office or going after a new career. Now that she is no longer flying, she hopes to inspire many more people through her journey of discovering herself through flight. Mary is the mother of two daughters and lives in Bridgton, Maine.

Bringing Color to Black and White
This class will cover some of the basics of acrylic painting and open the window into personal expression through color. Working from the simple black and white silhouettes of plants, like branches against the sky, we will explore color mixing, layering, composition, and an abstract approach to looking and translating what we see.
Kaitlyn Miller began her painting career by observing the immeasurable beauty of simple branches against the sky and painting them. Having worked as a studio potter on Little Cranberry Island for the last 15 years she is newly transplanted to the mainland and is excited for more color to come into the world. She has her BFA in Ceramics from Maine College of Art and is a full time studio potter and pleinair painter who has set her roots on Little Cranberry Island for the past 15 years. Newly transplanted to the mainland, she is now branching out into teaching and is excited for more color to come into the world. ย ย ย ย
