“Making the Secrets of Nature Visible: Science and Art”
“Making the Secrets of Nature Visible: Science and Art,” the 2024 theme of MDI Bio Lab’s Art Meets Science program, is centered on the belief that both art and science offer legitimate ways to better comprehend our world.
“To develop a complete mind: Study the science of art; study the art of science. Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else.” - Leonardo da Vinci
MDI Bio Lab has been a center of scientific excellence on the coast of Maine for over 125 years. Our approach is to seek answers within the natural world, paired with a deep understanding of the scientific process. Our scientists work collaboratively to understand the secrets of how nature works and to apply that understanding to improve the human condition. Our work is focused on discovering novel cellular and molecular mechanisms of disease and translating our basic research discoveries into potential therapies. Discerning the differences and similarities between the artistic process and the scientific method helps refine our research strategies and better communicate our work.
“Science and Art” beautifully enhances the MDI Bio Lab’s research and education activities, helping us to develop a complete mind and explore how art can communicate and catalyze science. As a community, we will study the science of art; study the art of science. Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else. Dr. Hermann Haller was named president of MDIBL in 2018 after serving as a faculty member and visiting scientist for more than 20 years, researching acute and chronic kidney damage.
Currently, the Haller Lab uses stem cells to grow new renal tissue in an effort to unlock the secrets to growing replacement kidneys. In addition to his position at MDIBL, Haller is a professor and former chairman of the Division of Nephrology at the Hannover Medical School in Germany and a skilled art historian. He has published more than 700 peer-reviewed articles, holds six worldwide patents and founded four biotech companies. Dr. Haller serves on numerous advisory boards, including those of Bayer, Boehringer Ingelheim, Genzyme and Novo Nordisk.

“Plain Madeleine: Mrs. John Jacob Astor in Bar Harbor” with Mac Smith
Thursday, August 29th at 7 pm
BAR HARBOR—Join us at the Jesup for an author talk with Mac Smith on his new book “Plain Madeleine: Mrs. John Jacob Astor in Bar Harbor.”
The story of Madeleine and Colonel John Jacob Astor is very much part of the story of Bar Harbor, Maine. The relatively poor Madeleine Force met Colonel Astor, the third richest man in the United States, in Bar Harbor in 1910. The vicious scandal after their wedding caused the newlyweds to board the Titanic to return to America; the ensuing tragedy would claim the life of the colonel.
Madeleine Astor returned to Bar Harbor after the disaster, where all eyes were on her, and where she was triumphant in claiming the role of social leader. In 1916, she remarried in the center of Bar Harbor, and gave up everything Astor.
The story follows the 17 years of her second marriage, and then her scandalous third marriage. Madeleine, in her 40s, married a penniless young boxer and her name erased from the Social Register after that. She died a lonely figure in her 40s.
This new book from historian Mac Smith documents Madeleine's life in Bar Harbor and the Astor presence on Bar Harbor through Colonel Aster's family and the Kane family—Astor cousins who were prominent there. It puts Madeleine Astor's story in the context of Bar Harbor's Golden Age. In telling Madeleine Astor's story, the story of a changing Bar Harbor is also revealed.
A Navy veteran of the first Gulf War and former reporter for The Bar Harbor Times, Mac Smith lives in Stockton Springs, Maine, in the village of Sandy Point. He is the author of several books of Maine history, including Mainers on the Titanic, Peyton Place Comes Home to Maine, Siege at the Statehouse, and Disaster at the Bar Harbor Ferry.
Copies of “Plain Madeleine: Mrs. John Jacob Astor in Bar Harbor” will be for sale the night of the event, courtesy of Sherman’s Maine Coast Bookshop. All sales that evening benefit the Jesup Memorial Library.
This event is free and available to attend in-person or online. Register here: https://www.jesuplibrary.org/events/smith-astor
Hook ‘n I Hooked Rugs Exhibit September 3-28

SOUTHWEST HARBOR—From Karen McFarland’s “Oh Buoy!” to Mary Hays’ “The Cove” the hooked rugs on display at the Southwest Harbor Public Library will delight with color and variety from September 3 through 28th. Members of Hook ‘n I, Mount Desert Island’s rug hooking group, have created original designs while also working from traditional and modern hooking patterns. The Hook ‘n I group was formed more than 15 years ago, and the group meets weekly from September to May at the library. The first meeting of this season will be on Thursday, September 12th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Exhibitors in September will include Judith Burger-Gossart, Sugar Fenton, Patsy Fogarty, Bianka Fuksman, Mary Hays, Cookie Horner, Rosemary Levin, Karen McFarland, Betsy Patterson, Jan Reed, Liz Rosenfeld, Nancy Turner, Nancy Weingarten, Sandy Wilcox, and more.
Rug hooking is a traditional Maine craft. Years ago, rugs were hooked by local women both to produce needed articles for their homes and to sell for pin money. The Hook ‘n I members enjoy carrying on this tradition, creating beautiful rugs, pillows, purses, and other articles. We also welcome knitters, needlepointers, and those who practice other fiber arts.
“We’d love to add new people to our group,” says Nancy Weingarten, coordinator of the group. “Whether you have been hooking for a while, would like to learn, or are interested in fiber crafts in general, we’d love to have you join us. Just come on a Thursday afternoon!”

Alice Limoges & Amelia Ray
DEER ISLE—Alice Limoges has been singing since before she could walk. Whether performing her poetic songs about love and nature, or shining a light on mental health, Alice Limoges's canon is lit up by her storytelling, unique, soulful voice and sophisticated instrumentals. She has released 6 original albums/EPs, toured festivals and colleges across North America, and even performed on Jon Samson’s Grammy Award winning album.
Amelia Ray is a writer, composer and performer who engages in barrier-breaking storytelling. Her 31-year career has spanned the fields of music, literature, performance art, film and humanitarianism. As a polyglot, Ray has spent decades contemplating how similar concepts are expressed differently linguistically across cultures. This research has permeated her versatile artistic work, which aims to improve understanding and communication between people from different backgrounds. The San Francisco native has performed across the States and Europe, and was selected to appear at the 2024 National Women’s Music Festival. Her performances bring to life intricate, rhythmic and emotional musical stories that are full of characters as raw, confused and contradictory as we all are.

STEEL PANTHER ON THE PROWL
LIVE at the 1932 Criterion Theatre! Join us for an evening of live music with Steel Panther on Saturday, August 31st at 8:00 PM

Hailing from Los Angeles, the epicenter for rock n’ roll in all its debauchery and glamour, Steel Panther has established themselves as the world’s premier party band, melding hard rock virtuosity with parody and criminally good looks. Steel Panther is a global phenomenon with four full-length albums, touring across the world, platinum-level You Tube status and high-profile television appearances such as Jimmy Kimmel Live, Larry King Now, and FOX NFL Sunday.
Rolling Stone avowed, “There’s a reason Steel Panther have transcended their origins as a cover band playing the Sunset Strip,” while Metal Sucks declared, Steel Panther’s concept is genius...their songwriting is...preposterously snappy – and relatable.”

“David Little: The Real and the Surreal”
Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. in person
NORTHEAST HARBOR—On Wednesday, September 4, at 5:30 pm, the Northeast Harbor Library will open the exhibition “David Little: The Real and Surreal” in the Mellon Room. The reception includes refreshments and brief remarks and a signing of Art of Penobscot Bay, the latest collaboration of David and his brother Carl.
“David Little: The Real and the Surreal” offers a cross-section of the Portland-based artist’s work. Along with his familiar plein-air landscape paintings and craypas drawings of Maine, including images of Katahdin, Corea, Great Cranberry Island, and Acadia, the show presents recent mixed-media explorations of abstract idioms in watercolor, ink, collage and photography. Some of the new work was featured earlier this year in “Eclectic Chord” at Cove Street Arts in Portland, and several photographs recently entered the University of New England’s Stephen Halpert collection. Little also mounted a large exhibition of his pandemic–related abstract work at the Merrill Memorial Library in Yarmouth, titled “Line & Color: An Artist Let Loose.”
“My first show before moving to Maine in 1988 was at the Northeast Harbor Library in May of 1985,” Little says. He is delighted to return after so many years to share his work. The show runs through the month of September and is, in scope, a mini-retrospective.
Little holds an M.A. and M.F.A. in painting from the University of Iowa, attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (1981 and 1982), and has had residencies on Monhegan Island and at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. He is the author of Art of Katahdin and co-author with his brother Carl of Art of Acadia, Paintings of Portland, and Art of Penobscot Bay.
For more information, visit the library’s website at nehlibrary.org. This event is free and open to the public, and copies of the Little brothers’ book will be available for sale and signing. Registration is not required but is recommended. Please visit the library's website at www.nehlibrary.org to register.

31st Annual David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament
BAR HARBOR—Mount Desert Island (MDI) Hospital and Bar Harbor Bank & Trust proudly announce the 31st Annual David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament to be held on Thursday, September 26 at Kebo Valley Golf Club.
The David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament has been a signature event for Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, bringing together businesses and golfers from MDI and beyond to support many local organizations throughout the years. David Harding, for whom the tournament is named, was Chairman of the Board of Bar Harbor Bankshares for many years. Dave was a strong community supporter who was instrumental in launching the MDI YMCA. He loved golfing, and he loved Kebo.
In 2021, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust selected Mount Desert Island Hospital as the beneficiary for the tournament. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust and Mount Desert Island Hospital raised $15,000 to support the funding of a new MRI machine for the hospital. In 2022, recognizing its vital services to our community, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust selected Mount Desert Island Hospital to manage the tournament and be the primary beneficiary going forward, that year raising over $31,000. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust continues to support as the presenting sponsor, and its employees volunteer their time to help organize and staff the event.
“We are thrilled to once again partner with Bar Harbor Bank & Trust for the 31st Annual David R. WEEKEND ON THE WATER!
Sunset Cruise to benefit the SPCA of Hancock County
via SPCA of Hancock County
BAR HARBOR – Enjoy a two-hour sunset cruise while supporting the animals at the SPCA of Hancock County’s animal shelter.
The SPCA Critter Cruise will be held on Sunday, September 8, aboard Acadian Boat Tour’s 149-passenger vessel, the Acadia, and includes a Happy Hour hors d’oevres, raffles, and a cash bar, with all proceeds benefitting the animals. Tickets for the cruise are $60 each.
The cruise will depart at 5 p.m. sharp from the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel dock at 119 Eden St., Bar Harbor. Guests are encouraged to dress warmly and to arrive 20 to 30 minutes prior to departure to allow time to park and board the boat. Guests are required to check in at the ticket booth at 119 Eden St. to ensure the captain and crew have an accurate count of cruisers.
The Acadia will go along the shoreline of Bar Harbor and will include views of the summer mansions, Egg Rock Lighthouse, seals, harbor porpoise, and eagles. An Acadia Boat Tours experience naturalist will narrate the tour with history and anecdotes. The boat will stop in the bay during the last portion of the cruise to watch the sunset at 6:57 p.m.
The event will be postponed to Sunday, Sept. 15, at the captain’s discretion in the event of severe wind or fog. Pets are not allowed on the boat.
The event is made possible by Acadian Boat Tours and Atlantic Oceanside Hotel with support from Machias Savings Bank and Bar Harbor Bank and Trust.
“This will be a really fun and beautiful event. It will be a rare opportunity to see the Bar Harbor area from the water, enjoy some great food and drink while supporting the SPCA,” said Michelle Allvin, SPCA board president. “Please join us for this incredible excursion.”

But even if it isn’t, you can become a call member
Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

ASC Racial Justice Book Group
Are you interested in joining us? We are open to new members who want to share in the reading and the hard work that ensues as we examine the underpinnings of systemic racism and its effects on society and on each of us individually, in the ultimate hope that our studies can work toward change.
We have been meeting once a month on the second Tuesday of the month from 10:30- 12:15.
We started with the basic readings of How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi and The Sum of Us by Heather McGhee. We then spent many months delving deeply into The 1619 Project edited by Nikole Hannah-Jones.
Since then, we’ve read some James Baldwin, Colon Whitehead, Zora Neale Hurston, Eddie S. Glaude, Jr., Clint Smith and many others. We look forward in the next few months to reading some James McBride and Bryan Stevenson. We also share articles of interest that deal with the issues we’re facing.
If the truly hard, but most meaningful, work we are doing to examine our society, culture and ourselves sounds like something that interests you, please contact me at rjbg2021@gmail.com or 207-664-9954.
