STRONG WOMEN AND THEIR BROAD INFLUENCE
Join us for a free lecture about the life of Bar Harbor Times editor LaRue Spiker and her partner Louise Gilbert through an exploration of their courage during the Civil Rights Era.
LaRue Spiker is celebrated on Mount Desert Island as an activist, environmentalist, and editor for the Bar Harbor Times, but many people do not know that LaRue Spiker and her life partner Louise Gilbert courageously put their lives and their freedom on the line in one of the most violent landmark incidents in the Civil Rights Era: the Wade House bombing. In 1954, an African American family moved into a home in a white neighborhood in Louisville. Within days, racist signs and a burning cross appeared near their yard, and the windows in the home were shot out. A small group of activists volunteered to keep guard in the home at night so that the family could sleep. LaRue and Louise were among these five guardians. One night the house was bombed, and the five were accused of having planted the bomb themselves to incite a riot. Arrested and jailed on charges of sedition, the women faced the very real possibility of a fourteen-year prison sentence. The Wade House Bombing became a national turning point in the struggle for housing desegregation. Understanding the McCarthy era with its Communist and homosexual witch hunts, today we can appreciate and celebrate the stunning heroism of these lesbians who made Mount Desert Island their home for twenty-five years.
Carolyn Gage is a playwright, performer, director, and activist. The author of nine collections of lesbian and feminist themed plays and eighty-three plays, musicals, and one-woman shows, she specializes in non-traditional roles for women, especially those reclaiming famous lesbians whose stories have been distorted or erased from history.

Hook ‘n I Hooked Rugs Exhibit September 3-28
Weekly Rug Hooking Thursdays, starting September 12
via SWH Library
SOUTHWEST HARBOR—From Karen McFarland’s “Oh Buoy!” to Mary Hays’ “The Cove” the hooked rugs on display at the Southwest Harbor Public Library will delight with color and variety from September 3 through 28th. Members of Hook ‘n I, Mount Desert Island’s rug hooking group, have created original designs while also working from traditional and modern hooking patterns. The Hook ‘n I group was formed more than 15 years ago, and the group meets weekly from September to May at the library. The first meeting of this season will be on Thursday, September 12th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Exhibitors in September will include Judith Burger-Gossart, Sugar Fenton, Patsy Fogarty, Bianka Fuksman, Mary Hays, Cookie Horner, Rosemary Levin, Karen McFarland, Betsy Patterson, Jan Reed, Liz Rosenfeld, Nancy Turner, Nancy Weingarten, Sandy Wilcox, and more.
Rug hooking is a traditional Maine craft. Years ago, rugs were hooked by local women both to produce needed articles for their homes and to sell for pin money. The Hook ‘n I members enjoy carrying on this tradition, creating beautiful rugs, pillows, purses, and other articles. We also welcome knitters, needlepointers, and those who practice other fiber arts.
“We’d love to add new people to our group,” says Nancy Weingarten, coordinator of the group. “Whether you have been hooking for a while, would like to learn, or are interested in fiber crafts in general, we’d love to have you join us. Just come on a Thursday afternoon!”

KIM STANLEY ROBINSON TALKS PLACE, STORY, AND CLIMATE
Date: Saturday September 28th at 4:00 p.m.
Location: The Neighborhood House in Northeast Harbor
Admission is FREE!
NORTHEAST HARBOR—Join A Climate to Thrive and Kim Stanley Robinson to explore the important roles of place and story in addressing climate change and building resilience. Let's celebrate our connection to the place we call home and discuss the narratives that can positively shape our coming decades. We hope you can join us!
Kim Stanley Robinson is often called one of the best living science-fiction writers, Robinson has long grappled with the topic of climate change in his novels, includingAntarctica, the Science in the Capital trilogy, and New York 2140. In The Ministry for the Future, published in 2020, Robinson explores both possible impacts and solutions that will likely play out in the coming decades through the lens of a fictional arm of the United Nations created specifically to address climate change. The novel received significant acclaim, and Robinson was given a special pass to the 2021 Conference of the Parties (COP) in Glasgow that provided him with the opportunity to attend the detailed negotiation sessions. In 2022, Robinson published The High Sierra: A Love Story, a memoir dedicated to a place that holds special meaning to Robinson. Mount Desert Island is another place that holds significance for Stan, as he has visited MDI annually since 1982, when he married his wife, whose mother was raised in Bar Harbor.
31st Annual David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament
BAR HARBOR—Mount Desert Island (MDI) Hospital and Bar Harbor Bank & Trust proudly announce the 31st Annual David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament to be held on Thursday, September 26 at Kebo Valley Golf Club.
The David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament has been a signature event for Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, bringing together businesses and golfers from MDI and beyond to support many local organizations throughout the years. David Harding, for whom the tournament is named, was Chairman of the Board of Bar Harbor Bankshares for many years. Dave was a strong community supporter who was instrumental in launching the MDI YMCA. He loved golfing, and he loved Kebo.
In 2021, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust selected Mount Desert Island Hospital as the beneficiary for the tournament. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust and Mount Desert Island Hospital raised $15,000 to support the funding of a new MRI machine for the hospital. In 2022, recognizing its vital services to our community, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust selected Mount Desert Island Hospital to manage the tournament and be the primary beneficiary going forward, that year raising over $31,000. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust continues to support as the presenting sponsor, and its employees volunteer their time to help organize and staff the event.
“We are thrilled to once again partner with Bar Harbor Bank & Trust for the 31st Annual David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament,” said Chrissi Maguire, President/CEO of MDI Hospital and Health Centers. “This event is a wonderful tribute to a remarkable person and showcases the incredible support and partnership the bank has shown the hospital over the years. The golf tournament highlights the vibrant spirit of our community and local businesses coming together for a day of friendly competition and collective dedication to advancing our mission of providing high quality care to our communities.”
Curtis Simard, President and CEO at Bar Harbor Bank & Trust says of the tournament partnership, “Bar Harbor Bank & Trust has been a steadfast supporter of MDI Hospital for over 125 years, and we have increased our support in recent years, knowing that charitable contributions are making a difference for the lives of those in the region. The Hospital leadership and team have never been more committed to providing comprehensive care to all in our community. We recognize the significant challenges associated with operating a critical access hospital and appreciate the steadfast dedication of MDI Hospital’s team to invest in the staff and technological advancements that lead to the highest-level patient outcomes.”
Individuals looking to partake in this event can secure their spot for $100 per golfer, signing up in teams of four. Individuals or pairs that register will be grouped in a foursome after registration.

Artist, Transgender Activist Edie Fake Discusses Work
BAR HARBOR — Fall 2024 College of the Atlantic Kippy Stroud Artist-in-Residence Edie Fake discusses his work at COA Sept. 17. The free public lecture begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Thomas S. Gates, Jr. Community Center.
Fake, an artist, illustrator, author, and transgender activist, will be wrapping up a month-long residency that he began at COA in mid-August. The Kippy Stroud residency is meant to give artists opportunities to generate creative thought and rejuvenate their minds so they can work on future productions.
Fake is an artist who respects contemplative engagement in his process. He creates complex murals that reveal an architectural substructure of wonder, unveiling the hidden legacies of community-building by those who live on the margins of normative society. The maker of wryly humorous printed matter and bejeweled paintings with hues that bring both intricate beauty and socially transgressive ornamentation into the world, Fake is someone whose work adds depth to the cultural ecosphere.
The college is thrilled to have this opportunity for Fake to spend time on campus and to present to the public, said COA art professor Catherine Clinger.
Fake is the fourth fall Kippy Stroud Artist-in-Residence. Former recipients include Mary Reid Kelly and Patrick Kelly (2019), Okwui Okpokwasili and Peter Born (2021), and Heather Lyon (2022). Tyler Schiff Author Talk – Wednesday, September 18th at 5:30 pm in person
On Wednesday September 18th at 5:30pm, the Northeast Harbor Library will host author Tyler Schiff for a talk about her new collection of crime stories, Diary of a Prosecutor on the Run.
Diary of a Prosecutor on the Run introduces us to regular men and women in law enforcement who have been battered by life but manage to retain their dignity: a forensic artist, a public attorney, a financial regulator, current and former FBI agents, and a U.S. Marshal and prison guard, among others. This darkly comic vision begins with a psychological thriller. A prosecutor goes on the run after she brings a powerful CEO to trial. By turns strange and familiar, Diary of a Prosecutor on the Run is a tale that provokes and surprises.
Schiff was born in Boston and worked as a managing director on the Goldman Sachs trading desk before devoting herself full-time to writing. She worked as a TV writer on Beacon 23 (MGM+) and sold original material to WB. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and four children, and spends summers on MDI.
For more information or to register, visit the library’s website at nehlibrary.org. This event will be held in person. Registration is recommended. This event is free and open to the public. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing.
Martha Tod Dudman’s “Sunrise and the Real World”
Martha Tod Dudman’s “Sunrise and the Real World”
Southwest Harbor: On Tuesday, September 17th at 5:30, the Southwest Harbor Public Library welcomes Martha Tod Dudman for a reading and discussion of her new locally-based thriller, “Sunrise and the Real World”. A captivating coming-of-age story that explores temptation, morality, and mental health, “Sunrise” features a recent college graduate who works at a residential treatment center for troubled teens. She quickly finds herself absorbed into a landscape of angry and abused teenagers, illicit romance, and danger. Years later, she’s forced to confront the person she was, the choices she made, and the bitter ghosts that haunt her. “Dudman’s searing honesty speaks eloquently to our most fragile selves, whether wounded child or frantic parent, in a stunner book.”- People Magazine.
Martha Tod Dudman is the author of “Dawn” (Puckerbrush Press, 1989), “Augusta, Gone” (Simon & Schuster, 2001), “Expecting to Fly” (Simon & Schuster, 2004), and “Black Olives” (Simon & Schuster, 2008). “Augusta, Gone” was adapted as an award-winning Lifetime production. Born in St. Louis, Missouri and raised in Washington, D.C, Dudman went to Antioch College and moved to Maine in 1975, first to Little Cranberry Island, then to Northeast Harbor. Dudman serves as a selectman for the town of Mount Desert and on a variety of non-profit and community boards. Books will be available for purchase and to be signed by the author.

"Unlocking Archives: Expert Tips to Transform Historical Records into Engaging Presentations and Publications"
Expert archivist Holly Hendricks, Ellsworth Historical Society Collections Specialist, reveals how to turn archives into presentations and publications. She recently created two presentations using just a few written records, but expanded our understanding of them with a variety of other obtainable private records in the EHS archives and from the public records.
Hendricks successfully took Alice Mullan's three diaries of her life in WWI Ellsworth, and expanded them into a rich narrative, setting the social and cultural stage of the Ellsworth she lived in, and creating a word picture of her life and social activities as a young woman embarking on her career. In another project, and using the letters from Sidney Stockbridge, a civilian Ellsworth man wrote to his mother from the front lines of the Civil War, Hendricks created a social and political context for his letters which opened a window to understand the war-time life he was living and by extension, war-time life at the battlegrounds of the Civil War.
Archivists are organized, however it takes another level of organization to find and index supporting documents to most fully tell the stories of any collection of archived materials. Ms. Hendricks excels at this higher level of organization, and this is what she will teach in the Monoday, September 16th program, at the Ellsworth Library Riverview Room at 7:00pm. Professional archivists will gain useful techniques, as will family historians, genealogists, and others interested in how to organize the historic materials they are safeguarding and wishing to make relevant and interesting to next generations.

Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

ASC Racial Justice Book Group
Are you interested in joining us? We are open to new members who want to share in the reading and the hard work that ensues as we examine the underpinnings of systemic racism and its effects on society and on each of us individually, in the ultimate hope that our studies can work toward change.
We have been meeting once a month on the second Tuesday of the month from 10:30- 12:15.
We started with the basic readings of How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi and The Sum of Us by Heather McGhee. We then spent many months delving deeply into The 1619 Project edited by Nikole Hannah-Jones.
Since then, we’ve read some James Baldwin, Colon Whitehead, Zora Neale Hurston, Eddie S. Glaude, Jr., Clint Smith and many others. We look forward in the next few months to reading some James McBride and Bryan Stevenson. We also share articles of interest that deal with the issues we’re facing.
If the truly hard, but most meaningful, work we are doing to examine our society, culture and ourselves sounds like something that interests you, please contact me at rjbg2021@gmail.com or 207-664-9954.
