After School Youth Clubโ2024/2025 School Year
For nearly a quarter century, The Neighborhood House has offered a wide array of after school activities, projects, games, and laughter for school aged kids every Monday thru Thursday. The โAfter School Youth Clubโ provides a safe and fun spot for kids to โhang outโ each afternoon. This drop-in recreational program continues to serve as a flexible option for many families. Whether your child will be attending four days a week or just every once in a while, ALL kids in grades K and up are welcomed and we look forward to seeing them! This yearโs program gets underway on Tuesday, September 3, just after the start of the new school year.
Note: The program is not open to children entering pre-Kindergarten. We look forward to seeing those kiddos next year when theyโre better equipped to handle the longer day both socially and emotionally.

This class will focus primarily on Rhumba and Salsa patterns for social dance settings at the beginner/intermediate levels.

31st Annual David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament
BAR HARBORโMount Desert Island (MDI) Hospital and Bar Harbor Bank & Trust proudly announce the 31stย Annual David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament to be held on Thursday, September 26ย at Kebo Valley Golf Club.
The David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament has been a signature event for Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, bringing together businesses and golfers from MDI and beyond to support many local organizations throughout the years.ย David Harding, for whom the tournament is named, was Chairman of the Board of Bar Harbor Bankshares for many years. Dave was a strong community supporter who was instrumental in launching the MDI YMCA. He loved golfing, and he loved Kebo.
In 2021, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust selected Mount Desert Island Hospital as the beneficiary for the tournament. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust and Mount Desert Island Hospital raised $15,000 to support the funding of a new MRI machine for the hospital. In 2022, recognizing its vital services to our community, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust selected Mount Desert Island Hospital to manage the tournament and be the primary beneficiary going forward, that year raising over $31,000. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust continues to support as the presenting sponsor, and its employees volunteer their time to help organize and staff the event.

MDI Produce Exchange: A Community Space to Share or Pick Up Fresh Produce
BAR HARBORโStarting October 1, 2024, MDI residents will have the opportunity to participate in the MDI Produce Exchange, a community-driven give-and-take produce trailer managed by Healthy Acadiaโs Downeast Gleaning Initiative and located at Peggy Rockefeller Farm in Bar Harbor (538 Norway Drive - accessible via the Crooked Road entrance). This space allows community members to donate excess garden or farm produce or take home fresh food as needed - free of charge.
Using this give-and-take model, Healthy Acadiaโs Downeast Gleaning Initiative aims to reduce food waste and expand community access to fresh, local produce. The refrigerated trailer will be open for anyone to drop off fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, or other homegrown items. Community members are welcome to take whatever they need, ensuring food does not go to waste while helping neighbors.
How It Works
Donations: Fresh produce, including fruits, vegetables, and eggs, can be dropped off at the farmโs refrigerated trailer.
Pick-ups: Anyone can take what they need from the fridge, simply by bringing their own container for transport.
The Downeast Gleaning Initiative will manage the upkeep of the trailer. Community members are asked to fill out a brief form when donating or collecting food, helping to track whatโs available. Starting October 1, a list of items available in the produce trailer will be posted on Healthy Acadiaโs website so visitors can easily check what's fresh before arriving: https://healthyacadia.org/hffa-mdi-produce-exchange. To access the produce trailer at 538 Norway Drive, visitors should enter via the Crooked Road entrance and follow the signs marked, "Healthy Acadia Produce." The program is slated to run through the end of the harvest season.

Trailblazers: Music by Pioneering Late 19th and Early 20th Century Women
BAR HARBORโViolist Molly Gebrian and pianist Danny Holt present a fun and informative lecture-recital: Their new album, "Trailblazers", shines a spotlight on music from the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Henriรซtte Bosmans, Ethel Smyth, and Dora Pejaฤeviฤโwomen who were unabashedly themselves, defying the social expectations of their time against the backdrop of world wars and a global pandemic. Originally written for cello and piano, all three sonatas are presented here in new arrangements for viola and piano, marking a significant contribution to the viola repertoire. Gebrian and Holt will perform selections from the album, interspersed with a multimedia presentation telling the stories of these remarkable women. Their new album from Acis Productions, Trailblazers, is available on all major streaming platforms.
Dr. Molly Gebrian is a professional violist and scholar with a background in cognitive neuroscience. Her area of expertise is applying the research on learning and memory to practicing and performing music. She also investigates the intersections between music and language. As a performer, she prioritizes the works of living composers and those who have traditionally been excluded from the culture of classical music. She holds degrees in both music and neuroscience from Oberlin College and Conservatory, New England Conservatory of Music, and Rice University. Previously, she was the viola professor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and the University of Arizona. After a decade of teaching viola at the collegiate level, she will join the faculty at New England Conservatory of Music in fall, 2024, to teach courses on the science of practicing.
Called โphenomenalโ by the late music critic Alan Rich, and hailed as one of the โlocal heroesโ of the Los Angeles music scene (LAcitybeat.com), pianist Danny Holt performs around the globe in concert halls (Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hollywood Bowl), clubs (Joeโs Pub, The Blue Whale, Copenhagen Jazzhouse) art galleries (MASS MoCA, Hammer Museum), churches, living rooms, and wherever else he can find a piano and someone to listen. He has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Blue Man Group, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, the California EAR Unit, and the Calder Quartet. His recorded catalog includes the recent solo album โPiano Music of Mike Garsonโ and other solo, chamber, and orchestral releases on the Innova Recordings label, pfMENTUM, New World Records, Deutsche Grammophon, and Lโst records. Holt holds degrees from California Institute of the Arts, Hampshire College, Smith College, and Interlochen Arts Academy.

The first biannual African Turquoise Killifish Conference in the U.S. kicks off on campus (and online) on Saturday, October 5th. Co-organized by MDI Bio Lab postdocย Anastasia Pullman, M.D., and Stonybrook University Assistant Professorย Chi-Kuo Hu,ย Ph.D., the event brings together experts from a growing research community that is using the unique animal for aging studies.
Called ATK for short, the fish's short life cycle enables the relatively fast acquisition of biomedical data related to aging. Pullman is leading MDI Bio Lab's efforts to fully establish the model - and you can get a refresher introduction to her work inย this MDI Science Cafรฉ.

For seven years, Mary served as the Transportation Coordinator for Island Connections before her passing. This event is a tribute to her bright spirit and commitment to Island Connections' mission, Neighbors, and volunteers.

Each session will include hands-on exploration of these concepts, with the second half of the course focused on creating a pen and ink still-life over several weeks, complemented by both group and individual critiques.
Participants will walk away with a solid grasp of design concepts and competence in pen and ink and wash techniques, helping to develop artistic independence and creative problem-solving skills.

This course is designed to support a broad range of artistic interests, from painting and drawing to graphic and fashion design, making it an excellent opportunity for artists across disciplines to refine their skills and understanding of fundamental design elements.

Ernie McMullen is an accomplished artist and educator with a deep passion for teaching the foundations of design. Through his engaging teaching style, Ernie encourages his students to tackle complex artistic challenges with confidence, helping them develop critical skills that foster creative autonomy.

VIRTUAL WRITE ON! WRITING GROUP
Want support for your craft? The Write On! writerโs group has been meeting at the Jesup since 2014, and remotely during the pandemic. Each meeting, members may bring in up to 1200 words to read for feedback, and in turn offer feedback to others. Although each member doesnโt get to read work every time, the group shares the time fairly. The group meets on Zoom, and hold in confidence what is shared. This group welcomes adults 18 and up writing in many genres. Thereโs no homeworkโthe only commitment is two hours on Saturday mornings.

PRAYER SHAWL MISSION GROUP
Welcoming all knitters and would be knittersโฆand crocheters!ย The Welcome and Care Team at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church UCC is hosting a weekly Prayer Shawl Mission Group every Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church UCC. The intention of the group is to create a sense of community and a flow of Prayer Shawls for distribution to those in need of comfort due to illness, loneliness, or loss. Supplies and instruction will be provided to those with skills for knitting and/or crocheting and for those with a desire to learn.

On Thursday, October 10, the community is invited to a screening of the documentary film We Are the Warriors, with a panel discussion to follow. The film tells the story of a small Maine town deciding the fate of its American Indian mascot after facing public allegations of racist behavior at a high school football game. This event is co-presented by College of the Atlantic and the Abbe Museum, and will take place at Gates Community Center, College of the Atlantic, 105 Eden St, Bar Harbor, Maine, Pesumkuk, Wabanaki Territory. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., film starts at 6 p.m. Followed by a panelist discussion/Q & A. Film is 72 minutes long and the panel discussion lasts roughly 45 minutes. Seats are first come first served. Panelists include David Camlin and Megan Grumbling - the Co-Directors/Producers of the film, and Christiana Becker (Curator of Education at the Abbe Museum).ย

On Saturday, October 12, the community is invited to spend a special evening with Firefly the Hybrid and Family for a live performance to celebrate Indigenous Peoplesโ Day and Everyday, at the Gates Community Center, College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine - Pesumkuk, Wabanaki Territory. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Akwunnu - All Are Welcome.
Monday, October 14
On Monday, October 14, Indigenous Peoplesโ Day, Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, Maine - Pesumkuk, Wabanaki Territory, will offer free admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Explore some of the most important collections of Wabanaki cultural material and art in the world at this Native-led Smithsonian Affiliated museum in the heart of Bar Harbor, Maine at Pesumkuk in Wabanaki Territory. The Abbe Museum has developed a Wabanaki Allies Guide, focused on Sovereignty, to help attendees go deeper in the understanding and activation in support of the Wabanaki Nations. Also on Monday, October 14, join Christiana Becker for a Sacred Medicine Printmaking Workshop from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Abbe Museum. During the workshop you will hear what the four sacred medicines are and can print an already carved linoleum plate of the sacred medicine, cedar, to take home with you. Christiana is a part of the Penobscot Nation and is the Curator of Education at the museum. Becker holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art with a concentration in printmaking, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education, and a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Intermedia from the University of Maine. The research that shapes the creation of her art practice explores the history, culture, and sociopolitical pressures of North American Indigenous peoples, using those topics as a springboard to creating art.

ACADIA WILDLIFE CENTER TALK:
โSaving Sick and Injured Wild Animalsโ
BAR HARBORโTony Mullane, executive director of Acadia Wildlife Center, will present โSaving Sick and Injured Wild Animalsโ at Garland Farm on Oct. 10, presented by the Bar Harbor Garden Club. The center's mission is to heal sick and injured native wildlife and accepts most species of nativeย birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians with the goal of returning healthy animals back to the wild.
Mullane is following in Ann Rivers, his motherโs footsteps, who founded and operated the wildlife center for the past 30 years. He will share his unique childhood from catching eagles, to feeding squirrels, to pushing a moose calf through the woods, and highlight the centerโs accomplishments and the significant importance of wildlife in Maineโs ecosystems.
Mullane will bring to his presentation a few of the Ambassador Animals he uses in educating the public about Maineโs wildlife. The ambassadors are determined to be non-releasable due to the injuries they have sustained and each has found a safe and wonderful home at the Acadia Wildlife Center.
The wildlife center relies on the generous support of the local community to fulfill its mission and the Bar Harbor Garden Club suggests those who attend the program bring any of the following items to help support the center: unscented HE laundry detergent, laundry sheets, Hefty large garbage bags, pick-a-size Bounty paper towels, unscented tissues, 409 spray, Huggies Natural Baby Wipes, unsalted cashews or lightly used, unfrayed hand towels, washcloths or small polar fleece blankets.
Mullaneโs one-hour presentation will begin at 1 p.m., with time for questions. For those interested in seeing the gardens of Beatrix Farrand at Garland Farm, a short tour will be offered at noon, prior to the program.

OCTOBER CRAFT FAIR
Halloween-themed 5K Run and Walk to Benefit the SPCA of Hancock County
HOWL-O-RUN
LAMOINE โ Put on your best costume and strap on your running shoes for the Sixth Annual Jim Nobil Howl-O-Run 5K Walk and Run to benefit the SPCA of Hancock County.
Howl-O-Run is being held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 27, at Marlboro Beach in Lamoine. All the proceeds will support the animals in the SPCAโs care.
Participants will run or walk a scenic route decorated with Jack-O-Lanterns and boasting views of Frenchman Bay and mountains of Acadia National Park. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome. Costumes for adults, kids, and canines are encouraged.
There will be prizes for top adult, child, and canine runners as well as for best costumes for both humans and dogs.
The cost is only $25 per person and $15 for children. You can register online or in person on the day of the event beginning at 10 a.m. The first 50 people to sign up will receive a free custom T-shirt designed by local artist Lisa Williams.
If you are unable to take part in the race, you can become an event sponsor and have your logo featured on the event T-shirt as well as the SPCAโs website. You can also sponsor your favorite runner or walker. The deadline for T-shirt sponsorships is October 5.
Howl-O-Run is named after former SPCA Board President Jim Nobil. He served as president of the non-profit organization for many years and was instrumental in raising the funds to build the current SPCA shelter in Trenton, which opened its doors in 2010.
Nobil passed away in 2013, but his wife, Lynn Nobil, and daughter, Kiersten Persoff, are still active SPCA volunteers.

NORTHEAST HARBORโThe Northeast Harbor Library will host a free concert with pianist Dr. Donna Coleman on Wednesday, October 9 at 5:30 p.m. Coleman will perform the Piano Sonata No. 1 by American modernist composer Charles Ives (1874-1954).
Chockablock with hymn tunes and elements of the evolving Ragtime tradition, this seven movement sonata is the first half of the composerโs musical biography. The performance will be preceded by demonstrations of the material Ives quotes in the work and his transformation of it in this evocation of rural Americana at the end of the Romantic age.
Dr. Donna Coleman is one of the premiere interpreters of the music of Charles Ives. Former Head of Keyboard at Victorian College of the Arts and a dual citizen of Australia and the US, she now divides her time between Santa Fe and Melbourne Australia.ย

PLANT BASED COOKING CLASSES AT THE NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE
Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers
The Neighborhood House is thrilled to announce a special performance by the Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers on Thursday, October 10. The amazingly talented Torbeck Family will be performing their hysterical show, โThe Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollowโ beginning at 4:00pm. This FREE performance is sure to get audience members of all ages into the Halloween spirit along with plenty of laughs.
In this comedic version of the classic Washington Irving tale, schoolteacher Ichabod Crane helps the Headless Horseman find a new head and a spookier image. ย Meanwhile, a jealous Brom Bones tries to run Ichabod out of town as they both vie for the affection of Katrina Van Tassel. ย In the end the Horseman saves the day, and everyone lives "happily ever after!" ย
The show, which features 20 hand-crafted puppets along with some shadow puppetry, runs approximately 50 minutes and is intended for audience members ages four and up.
Note: Children attending Neighborhood House soccer practice day will be walked from the field to The Neighborhood House to see the show. Pick-up will be immediately following the show just before 5:00pm.

We have been meeting once a month on the secondย Tuesday of the month from 10:30- 12:15.
We started with the basic readings ofย How to Be an Antiracistย by Ibram X. Kendi andย The Sum of Usย by Heather McGhee.ย We then spent many months delving deeply intoย The 1619 Projectย edited by Nikole Hannah-Jones.
Since then, weโve read some James Baldwin, Colon Whitehead, Zora Neale Hurston, Eddie S. Glaude, Jr., Clint Smith and many others. We look forward in the next few months to reading some James McBride and Bryan Stevenson.ย We also share articles of interest that deal with the issues weโre facing.
