Mount Desert Historical Society and Library Collaboration
Southwest Harbor - Join us online for โLearning from LaRueโ a MDI Historical Society and Southwest Harbor Public Library collaboration on Tuesday, September 24th at 5:30 p.m. Jenna Jandreau, author of the article โLearning from LaRueโ published in the 2024 edition of Chebacco, will talk about LaRueโs prolific writing and photography in the area, and the impact both her creativity and conscience had on the people and places of Mount Desert Island.
LaRue Spiker, prominent among the Whoโs Who of Mount Desert Island, was a freelance writer, photographer, journalist, and editor of Bar Harbor Times in the early 1960s. Those who remember her describe her as no-nonsense and intelligent; not only did she receive frequent kudos in the Letters to the Editor, but also many criticisms for the opinions she expressed in her editorials and articles.
Having moved to the area โfrom away,โ Spiker brought a fresh lens to the island, capturing not only its natural beauty in her photographs but also numerous people from many different walks of life. She seemed to have an insatiable curiosity about everything MDI, writing about sea urchins, ladyslippers, and ferns, along with feature articles on fishing villages, local artists and writers, and political issues such as nuclear disarmament and the consolidation of MDI high schools.
Jenna Jandreau is a freelance writer and photographer who lives in northern Maineโs Saint John Valley with her husband and Yorkshire Terrier. She was the Collections Manager at MDI Historical Society in 2018 and the Communications Coordinator in 2022-2023. Her writing and photography have appeared in The Maine Townsman, Off the Coast, Strut & Axle, Chebacco, and other publications.

Weekly Save Our Summits Hikes
Do you want to be a #SoilHero by hiking up a mountain AND helping Acadiaโs efforts to restore summit vegetation? Friends of Acadia is partnering with the park and Schoodic Institute to host a weekly Save Our Summits Volunteer Program, every Wednesday from June through September. This program invites tenacious hikers to bring bags of soil to the summits of Penobscot and Sargent Mountains to help with restoration efforts. Hikes run from 8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., weather permitting. Advanced registration is required.ย

Join us at the Jesup for a presentation with Acadia Wildlife Center's Tony Mullane discussing AWC's pivotal role in preserving Maineโs ecosystems (and showing several educational animals)!
The Jesup Memorial library is excited to host an upcoming presentation by Tony Mullane, the newly appointed Executive Director of the Acadia Wildlife Center, on the Center's mission to rehabilitate sick and injured native wildlife in Maine. The event will highlight Tonyโs unique upbringing, from catching eagles, to feeding baby squirrels, to pushing a moose calf through the woods. Tony will also discuss the Center's pivotal role in preserving Maineโs ecosystems and will be showing several educational animals! ย Acadia Wildlife Center, established in 1994, is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of sick and injured native wildlife in Maine. BAR HARBORโMount Desert Island (MDI) Hospital and Bar Harbor Bank & Trust proudly announce the 31stย Annual David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament to be held on Thursday, September 26ย at Kebo Valley Golf Club.
The David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament has been a signature event for Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, bringing together businesses and golfers from MDI and beyond to support many local organizations throughout the years.ย David Harding, for whom the tournament is named, was Chairman of the Board of Bar Harbor Bankshares for many years. Dave was a strong community supporter who was instrumental in launching the MDI YMCA. He loved golfing, and he loved Kebo.
In 2021, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust selected Mount Desert Island Hospital as the beneficiary for the tournament. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust and Mount Desert Island Hospital raised $15,000 to support the funding of a new MRI machine for the hospital. In 2022, recognizing its vital services to our community, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust selected Mount Desert Island Hospital to manage the tournament and be the primary beneficiary going forward, that year raising over $31,000. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust continues to support as the presenting sponsor, and its employees volunteer their time to help organize and staff the event.

Reading with Wings features Maine author Kay Tobler Liss
Author Earl Brechlin hosts discussion of โComing Homeโ
SOUTHWEST HARBORโMaine Author Kay Tobler Liss will delve into her novel โComing Homeโ with guest host Earl Brechlin on Friday, Sept. 27 at 5:30 p.m. with a book signing afterward, as part of Reading with Wings, an occasional series that is a collaboration between the Southwest Harbor Public Library and the Wendell Gilley Museum. This event happens at the Gilley; admission is free but reservations are required at www.wendellgilleymuseum.org/calendar.
Liss says, โI believe thereโs nothing more important at this time in our history than our relationship to the natural world. I want to bring this urgent message to the world through my novels.โ
In โComing Home,โ four generations of a family return to cherished places in nature from their youth and uncover buried secrets about themselves. From the coast of North Carolina to New York, from Savannah, Georgia, to Switzerland, the special places include a meadow, a pine grove, a river, and mountain valley. Their journeys begin after a Christmas dinner and end a year later when they share their stories with each other and start to heal as a family. The novel was released in December 2023 to much praise.
โWe are excited to host Kay Tobler Liss, who impactfully writes of a family coming together with theย natural world a vivid and central character,โ says Erich Reed, director of the SWH library.
Gilley director Sean Charette says that Reading with Wings is a wonderfulย addition to the museumโs collaboration with the Southwest Harbor Public Library. โIt perfectly suits the Gilleyโs mission of bringing people closer to nature through art, and allows both organizations to do more โ and bring unique programs to more people โ by working together.โ
A Publishers Weekly Booklife reviewer wrote: โโฆComing Home explores the importance of family members talking about their feelings, all with a strong focus on the beauty of nature and art. Fans of novels that center around familial bonds, secrets, and self-discovery will find this resonant, with engaging, believable characters and a plot thatโs drawn from life and stirs real tears.โ
Liss has worked as a journalist in New York and Maine. She studied Literature at Bard College and Environmental Studies at Southampton College and taught both subjects. She and her husband live in Jefferson, Maine.
Brechlin, an author and former journalist, will guide the book discussion. He is the creator of more than a dozen books including the lauded โReturn to Moose River,โ a book of interconnected essays recounting annual canoe trips to the North Maine Woods with a small group of friends, closing with the death of his twin brother and the groupโs last trip to spread his brotherโs ashes in the place he loved best. Also a former Maine journalist, he worked for nearly 40 years in the stateโs newspaper industry and was the founding editor of the Mount Desert Islander

Enjoy an evening with hors dโoeuvres, music, drinks, excitement, and an exclusive viewing of five artifacts from our collection, which will be available for sponsorship. We will also be launching our new Adopt an Object program at this event, where you will be able to adopt an item from our collection to support its conservation. It'll be a night for the history books!

Come join Bar Harbor Historical Society curator Hanna McKellar as she takes you on a walk through downtown Bar Harbor and guides you through Bar Harbor's history by using the lens of stories about prominent women from the town's past.
This event is suitable for all ages and activity levels and walking shoes are recommended.
Hanna is originally from Southern California, but after moving to Maine for college, fell in love with the state and its history. Hanna has a deep passion for local history and historical preservationโtopics which became the focus of their studies at College of the Atlantic. During their time in college, Hanna interned with the Blue Hill Public Library and Jonathan Fisher Historic House Museum, and completed a senior project comprising of essays working to answer the questions of why and how people care about local history. In their free time, Hanna enjoys reading, learning about dinosaurs, needle felting, and spending time with her partner and two cats, Tugboat and Dilly Bean.

PANEL DISCUSSION ON VOTING RIGHTS AND THE INTEGRITY OF ELECTIONS IN MAINE

The League of Women Voters -Downeast is hosting a panel discussion on voting rights and the integrity of elections in Maine. The event will be held Saturday, September 28th, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Moore Community Center in Ellsworth. Panelists will beย Shenna Bellows, Maine Secretary of State, andย Lisa Goodwin, Bangor City Clerk.
In recent years, legislators and election officials around the US have implemented strict voter ID laws and other new rules that redefine and restrict the right to vote. Our panel will discuss the current laws on voting rights in Maine, the many checks and balances built into Maineโs election system, and proposed new measures regarding voting and elections.
Please join us to learn more about this important issue. This hybrid event is free to the public, and lunch will be offered to in-person attendees.ย There will be an opportunity for questions from the live audience, and there will be an opportunity for the Zoom audience to submit their own questions to be presented by the moderator.

Kim Stanley Robinsonย is often called one of the best living science-fiction writers, Robinson has long grappled with the topic of climate change in his novels, includingAntarctica, theย Science in the Capitalย trilogy, andย New York 2140. Inย The Ministry for the Future, published in 2020, Robinson explores both possible impacts and solutions that will likely play out in the coming decades through the lens of a fictional arm of the United Nations created specifically to address climate change. The novel received significant acclaim, and Robinson was given a special pass to the 2021 Conference of the Parties (COP) in Glasgow that provided him with the opportunity to attend the detailed negotiation sessions. In 2022, Robinson publishedย The High Sierra: A Love Story, a memoir dedicated to a place that holds special meaning to Robinson.ย Mount Desert Island is another place that holds significance for Stan, as heย has visited MDI annually since 1982, when he married his wife, whose mother was raised in Bar Harbor.

VIRTUAL WRITE ON! WRITING GROUP
Want support for your craft? The Write On! writerโs group has been meeting at the Jesup since 2014, and remotely during the pandemic. Each meeting, members may bring in up to 1200 words to read for feedback, and in turn offer feedback to others. Although each member doesnโt get to read work every time, the group shares the time fairly. The group meets on Zoom, and hold in confidence what is shared. This group welcomes adults 18 and up writing in many genres. Thereโs no homeworkโthe only commitment is two hours on Saturday mornings.

The intention of the group is to create a sense of community and a flow of Prayer Shawls for distribution to those in need of comfort due to illness, loneliness, or loss. Supplies and instruction will be provided to those with skills for knitting and/or crocheting and for those with a desire to learn.

The first biannual African Turquoise Killifish Conference in the U.S. kicks off on campus (and online) on Saturday, October 5th. Co-organized by MDI Bio Lab postdocย Anastasia Pullman, M.D., and Stonybrook University Assistant Professorย Chi-Kuo Hu,ย Ph.D., the event brings together experts from a growing research community that is using the unique animal for aging studies.
Called ATK for short, the fish's short life cycle enables the relatively fast acquisition of biomedical data related to aging. Pullman is leading MDI Bio Lab's efforts to fully establish the model - and you can get a refresher introduction to her work inย this MDI Science Cafรฉ.

Trailblazers: Music by Pioneering Late 19th and Early 20th Century Women
BAR HARBORโViolist Molly Gebrian and pianist Danny Holt present a fun and informative lecture-recital: Their new album, "Trailblazers", shines a spotlight on music from the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Henriรซtte Bosmans, Ethel Smyth, and Dora Pejaฤeviฤโwomen who were unabashedly themselves, defying the social expectations of their time against the backdrop of world wars and a global pandemic. Originally written for cello and piano, all three sonatas are presented here in new arrangements for viola and piano, marking a significant contribution to the viola repertoire. Gebrian and Holt will perform selections from the album, interspersed with a multimedia presentation telling the stories of these remarkable women. Their new album from Acis Productions, Trailblazers, is available on all major streaming platforms.
Dr. Molly Gebrian is a professional violist and scholar with a background in cognitive neuroscience. Her area of expertise is applying the research on learning and memory to practicing and performing music. She also investigates the intersections between music and language. As a performer, she prioritizes the works of living composers and those who have traditionally been excluded from the culture of classical music. She holds degrees in both music and neuroscience from Oberlin College and Conservatory, New England Conservatory of Music, and Rice University. Previously, she was the viola professor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and the University of Arizona. After a decade of teaching viola at the collegiate level, she will join the faculty at New England Conservatory of Music in fall, 2024, to teach courses on the science of practicing.
Called โphenomenalโ by the late music critic Alan Rich, and hailed as one of the โlocal heroesโ of the Los Angeles music scene (LAcitybeat.com), pianist Danny Holt performs around the globe in concert halls (Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hollywood Bowl), clubs (Joeโs Pub, The Blue Whale, Copenhagen Jazzhouse) art galleries (MASS MoCA, Hammer Museum), churches, living rooms, and wherever else he can find a piano and someone to listen. He has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Blue Man Group, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, the California EAR Unit, and the Calder Quartet. His recorded catalog includes the recent solo album โPiano Music of Mike Garsonโ and other solo, chamber, and orchestral releases on the Innova Recordings label, pfMENTUM, New World Records, Deutsche Grammophon, and Lโst records. Holt holds degrees from California Institute of the Arts, Hampshire College, Smith College, and Interlochen Arts Academy.

Halloween-themed 5K Run and Walk to Benefit the SPCA of Hancock County
LAMOINE โ Put on your best costume and strap on your running shoes for the Sixth Annual Jim Nobil Howl-O-Run 5K Walk and Run to benefit the SPCA of Hancock County.
Howl-O-Run is being held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 27, at Marlboro Beach in Lamoine. All the proceeds will support the animals in the SPCAโs care.
Participants will run or walk a scenic route decorated with Jack-O-Lanterns and boasting views of Frenchman Bay and mountains of Acadia National Park. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome. Costumes for adults, kids, and canines are encouraged.
There will be prizes for top adult, child, and canine runners as well as for best costumes for both humans and dogs.
The cost is only $25 per person and $15 for children. You can register online or in person on the day of the event beginning at 10 a.m. The first 50 people to sign up will receive a free custom T-shirt designed by local artist Lisa Williams.
If you are unable to take part in the race, you can become an event sponsor and have your logo featured on the event T-shirt as well as the SPCAโs website. You can also sponsor your favorite runner or walker. The deadline for T-shirt sponsorships is October 5.
Howl-O-Run is named after former SPCA Board President Jim Nobil. He served as president of the non-profit organization for many years and was instrumental in raising the funds to build the current SPCA shelter in Trenton, which opened its doors in 2010.
Nobil passed away in 2013, but his wife, Lynn Nobil, and daughter, Kiersten Persoff, are still active SPCA volunteers.

Since then, weโve read some James Baldwin, Colon Whitehead, Zora Neale Hurston, Eddie S. Glaude, Jr., Clint Smith and many others. We look forward in the next few months to reading some James McBride and Bryan Stevenson.ย We also share articles of interest that deal with the issues weโre facing.
