After School Youth Club—2024/2025 School Year
For nearly a quarter century, The Neighborhood House has offered a wide array of after school activities, projects, games, and laughter for school aged kids every Monday thru Thursday. The “After School Youth Club” provides a safe and fun spot for kids to “hang out” each afternoon. This drop-in recreational program continues to serve as a flexible option for many families. Whether your child will be attending four days a week or just every once in a while, ALL kids in grades K and up are welcomed and we look forward to seeing them! This year’s program gets underway on Tuesday, September 3, just after the start of the new school year.

On Monday, October 14, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, Maine - Pesumkuk, Wabanaki Territory, will offer free admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Explore some of the most important collections of Wabanaki cultural material and art in the world at this Native-led Smithsonian Affiliated museum in the heart of Bar Harbor, Maine at Pesumkuk in Wabanaki Territory. The Abbe Museum has developed a Wabanaki Allies Guide, focused on Sovereignty, to help attendees go deeper in the understanding and activation in support of the Wabanaki Nations. Also on Monday, October 14, join Christiana Becker for a Sacred Medicine Printmaking Workshop from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Abbe Museum. During the workshop you will hear what the four sacred medicines are and can print an already carved linoleum plate of the sacred medicine, cedar, to take home with you. Christiana is a part of the Penobscot Nation and is the Curator of Education at the museum. Becker holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art with a concentration in printmaking, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education, and a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Intermedia from the University of Maine. The research that shapes the creation of her art practice explores the history, culture, and sociopolitical pressures of North American Indigenous peoples, using those topics as a springboard to creating art.

This class will focus primarily on Rhumba and Salsa patterns for social dance settings at the beginner/intermediate levels.

Painter of Maine Labor Mural Judy Taylor Scheduled for Public Appearance
NORTHEAST HARBOR—On Wednesday, October 16th from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. the Northeast Harbor Library will host Maine-based painter and educator Judy Taylor for a presentation entitled "Representations of Working People in the Visual Arts". Taylor will discuss how artists past and present have used their neighbors and contemporaries as subjects in their work, and will talk about what she looks for in a model. She will also show works from some of the women of the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s and those who painted in the hospitals during the two world wars.

It is then up to Mike, his brother, and Reggie the ice cream man to stop the Tall man.
Literary Study: 18th Century Romantic Poets
A free six-session class on Romantic Poets taught by Richard Parker at Northeast Harbor Library
The Romantic Poets of the eighteenth century are known not only for their departure from the historically rigid notion of poetry but also for their appreciation of the sublime. Richard will lead a deep analysis of the following classic poems: Coleridge: "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and "Kubla Khan"; Blake: "Tyger"; Wordsworth: "Lines Composed a Few Miles From Tintern Abbey"; Keats: "An Ode on a Grecian Urn"; and Shelley's "Ozymandias." Richard Parker has taught literature, religion, and spirituality since 1977 and holds a Doctorate in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. Want support for your craft? The Write On! writer’s group has been meeting at the Jesup since 2014, and remotely during the pandemic. Each meeting, members may bring in up to 1200 words to read for feedback, and in turn offer feedback to others. Although each member doesn’t get to read work every time, the group shares the time fairly. The group meets on Zoom, and hold in confidence what is shared. This group welcomes adults 18 and up writing in many genres. There’s no homework–the only commitment is two hours on Saturday mornings.

PRAYER SHAWL MISSION GROUP
Welcoming all knitters and would be knitters…and crocheters! The Welcome and Care Team at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church UCC is hosting a weekly Prayer Shawl Mission Group every Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church UCC. The intention of the group is to create a sense of community and a flow of Prayer Shawls for distribution to those in need of comfort due to illness, loneliness, or loss. Supplies and instruction will be provided to those with skills for knitting and/or crocheting and for those with a desire to learn.

Scientific institutes in Maine such as MDI Bio Lab, The Roux Institute and Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences are joining forces to drive their work to a new level – harnessing their cutting-edge research expertise to develop new therapies for human health and new jobs for Maine. Join scientists from MDI Bio Lab and collaborating organizations in Portland for a discussion of Maine’s future in the bioscience economy. NORTHEAST HARBOR—On Thursday, October 24th from 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm the Acadia Wildlife Center (AWC) will present on their work rehabilitating injured wildlife at the Northeast Harbor Library.
With the help of their ambassador animals—non-releasable wildlife that help educate the public—representatives of the AWC will share stories from the organization’s 30 years of work and provide a glimpse into how serving wildlife in need builds bridges between people and the environment.
Founded in 1994, the AWC maintains a clinic for native wildlife; patients are treated by trained professionals with licenses from Inland Fisheries and Wildlife of Maine, and the federal government. Animals are brought to the AWC clinic by game wardens, vets, police, marine patrol, and by many members of the general public. AWC is located on fifteen acres of private land adjacent to Acadia National Park.
Fight Like Hell: The Testimony of Mother Jones
BAR HARBOR — A screening of “Fight Like Hell: The Testimony of Mother Jones,” along with a Q&A with film actress and writer Kaiulani Lee, takes place at College of the Atlantic on Tuesday, Oct. 22. The free event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Davis Center for Human Ecology, Room 102.

Halloween-themed 5K Run and Walk to Benefit the SPCA of Hancock County
HOWL-O-RUN
LAMOINE – Put on your best costume and strap on your running shoes for the Sixth Annual Jim Nobil Howl-O-Run 5K Walk and Run to benefit the SPCA of Hancock County.
Howl-O-Run is being held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 27, at Marlboro Beach in Lamoine. All the proceeds will support the animals in the SPCA’s care.
Participants will run or walk a scenic route decorated with Jack-O-Lanterns and boasting views of Frenchman Bay and mountains of Acadia National Park. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome. Costumes for adults, kids, and canines are encouraged.
There will be prizes for top adult, child, and canine runners as well as for best costumes for both humans and dogs.
The cost is only $25 per person and $15 for children. You can register online or in person on the day of the event beginning at 10 a.m. The first 50 people to sign up will receive a free custom T-shirt designed by local artist Lisa Williams.
If you are unable to take part in the race, you can become an event sponsor and have your logo featured on the event T-shirt as well as the SPCA’s website. You can also sponsor your favorite runner or walker. The deadline for T-shirt sponsorships is October 5.
Howl-O-Run is named after former SPCA Board President Jim Nobil. He served as president of the non-profit organization for many years and was instrumental in raising the funds to build the current SPCA shelter in Trenton, which opened its doors in 2010.
Nobil passed away in 2013, but his wife, Lynn Nobil, and daughter, Kiersten Persoff, are still active SPCA volunteers.
This year’s presenting event sponsor is the Maine Community Foundation Mimi Fund.

ASC Racial Justice Book Group
Are you interested in joining us? We are open to new members who want to share in the reading and the hard work that ensues as we examine the underpinnings of systemic racism and its effects on society and on each of us individually, in the ultimate hope that our studies can work toward change.
We have been meeting once a month on the second Tuesday of the month from 10:30- 12:15.
We started with the basic readings of How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi and The Sum of Us by Heather McGhee. We then spent many months delving deeply into The 1619 Project edited by Nikole Hannah-Jones.
Since then, we’ve read some James Baldwin, Colon Whitehead, Zora Neale Hurston, Eddie S. Glaude, Jr., Clint Smith and many others. We look forward in the next few months to reading some James McBride and Bryan Stevenson. We also share articles of interest that deal with the issues we’re facing.

Flies & Lies
BAR HARBOR—Downeast Trout Unlimited is excited to announce the “Flies & Lies” fly-tying group.
Flies & Lies is open to anyone interested in the art of fly tying and the sport of fly fishing. This group will share information about fly-tying techniques and provide teaching opportunities for the fly-tying community. The group will meet on Sundays twice per month from October to April to promote fly fishing and conservation.

The Finback has entertainment most nights. The schedule is posted every Tuesday.
THE NOR’EASTER
The Nor’Easter has music every Saturday night from 8-10 in the summer and 7-9 in the winter.
ONE OFF PUB
The One Off Pub often has music and is often open until midnight. The location? 119 Main Street.
HAVANA
Every Saturday night its open, at 6:30 p.m, you can come hear the maestro Bob Lombardi. Maestro isn’t something we put out there for everyone. Havana is on lower Main Street.
IVY MANOR INN
Every day out on the lawn, weather permitting, the music begins at 2!
“Things To Do” is mostly curated by me looking for things happening in the upcoming week, which takes a lot of time and I truly do not know all that is going on.
