GAMING FESTIVAL!
Evening Music continues with Jacobean Consort Music
BAR HARBORโEvening Music, the series of chamber-music concerts presented by the Friends of Music at St. Saviourโs, will continue on Saturday 25 January at 4:00 pm. The ensemble Harmonie Universelle will perform Jacobean Consort Music: chamber music from the time of the Stuart kings of England (1604-1714) for harp, organ, and strings. Harpist Phoebe Durand will play on a reproduction of a 17th-century Italian triple harp, a harp with three rows of strings that was designed to play the chromatic music of the Baroque era, 150 years before the invention of the modern pedal-harp. She will join organist Daniel Pyle, who will play on a small portable organ designed for chamber-music of the 15th- through the 18th centuries. Also performing will be violinists Heidi Powell and Sylvia Schwartz and cellist Raffael Scheck.
The program is centered on works by Henry Purcell, William Lawes, and Giovanni Coperario. The last composer, in spite of his name, was an Englishman who was born John Cooper, but changed his name because he thought that Italian musicians were favored over their English contemporaries.
Harmonie Universelle has been performing music of the 17th and 18th centuries using historically-appropriate instruments and playing styles for over four decades. It was founded by American musicians working and studying in Amsterdam in the Netherlands in 1982. They returned to the United States in 1986, and since then have been performing throughout the U. S. and western Europe.
Lambing Workshop
BAR HARBORโCurrent or aspiring sheep owners, animal lovers, and homesteaders are invited to a day-long lambing workshop at College of the Atlantic Peggy Rockefeller Farm during the busy, and adorable, lambing season.
There are eight spots available for the workshop, which takes place on Saturday, January 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The sliding scale fee is $100โ$300, with lunch, hot drinks, and snacks included; scholarships may be available. Register at coa.edu/lambworkshop by January 17 to secure a space. This program, which is sponsored by the COA Food and Farming Workshop Series, is designed for adults, though youth ages 14-17 may be able to attend with prior permission.
Participants will learn how to care for sheep, both during lambing season and all year round. After completing morning chores together, theyโll observe the flock for early signs of labor, check on our ewes and new lambs, and perform ear tagging, tail docking, and other procedures if needed. With any luck, participants will be present to observe a lamb being born.
Topics of discussion include: the farmโs preparations for lambing season, from selecting breeding groups to making their lambing kit; ewe and lamb health and nutrition; the lambing process; post-birth lamb care; record keeping; vaccination and hoof trimming; and considerations when lambs are moved from the barn to pasture.
Participants should wear sturdy waterproof boots and layers appropriate for farm work and the weather. There will be more details and a packing list shared upon registration.

Free film screening and discussion of Join or Die
Bar Harbor-On Saturday January 25, from 1-3:30pm MDI Historical Society invites you to a free showing and discussion of Join or Die at Reel Pizza, Bar Harbor. This feature documentary follows the half-century story of America's civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam, whose groundbreaking "Bowling Alone" research into America's decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy's present crisis. Flanked by influential fans and scholars as well as inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country, join Bob as he explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And, most importantlyโฆ What can we do about it?
After the film, COA professor Jamie McKown will facilitate a discussion about how Mount Desert Island might bring Robert Putnam's ideas to our island communities.
Admission is free, but registration is required as seats are limited. Reserve your seats at https://mdihistory.org/events/join-or-die
This event is made possible by the generosity of Reel Pizza and Bar Harbor Bank & Trust.
