BAR HARBORโTo mark the publication of his new book, FREE: Words on Music by a Hi-Def Critic in an MP3 World, award-winning music producer, critic and translator Lawrence Schulman will talk about the work, which is a collection of his reviews on numerous 20th-century artists of the Great American Songbook, including Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin, country singer Patsy Cline, and others who may be less known to music lovers, such as Maxine Sullivan, Tim Buckley and Peter Allen. He will show clips of all the artists he will talk about and then take questions and autograph copies of FREE, which will be on sale in conjunction with Sherman's Maine Coast Book Shop in Bar Harbor.
This event is available to attend in-person or online. Attendees should note that the sound quality will be significantly better in-person, so we recommend attending at the library.
Lawrence Schulman, a graduate of Stony Brook University, the Sorbonne and CREAR, a school for film and video studies in Gouvieux, France, is a music producer, critic and translator who has compiled numerous CD sets devoted to Judy Garland in the past three decades. A collector and audiophile, Schulman has worked with such distinguished mastering engineers as Robert Parker, Jon M. Samuels, Gary Galo, Peter Rynston, Robin Cherry, Peter Reynolds, Nick Dellow, and Richard Moore. His talk on Garland, โMoments of Magic,โ has been heard in New York, Boston, and various venues in Maine, where he resides. While living in Paris between 1971 and 1997, he taught and translated, and currently translates for the French website OpusHD.net, which specializes in classical high-resolution recordings. During his Paris years he also worked for French Public Radio as a producer and host. He has written sound recording and book reviews for the ARSC Journal since 1994, as well as three original articles, including one on the late songwriter-singer Peter Allen which won the 2024 ARSC Journal Best Article of the Year award. His most recent CDs are Judy Garland: A Celebration (Trapeze/Acrobat, 2024), Judy Garland: The Two-A-Day Is Back in Town, Closing Night at the Palace, February 24, 1952 (JSP Records, 2023), Judy GarlandโThe Lost Vegas Show (High Definition Tape Transfers, 2023), Judy GarlandโThe Final Concert In Copenhagen (High Definition Tape Transfers, 2022), Judy GarlandโThe Greatest Night in Show Business History, Carnegie Hall, April 23, 1961(High Definition Tape Transfers, 2022), Classic Concert Series: Judy At Carnegie Hall - Judy In Person (AVID, 2022), and Judy GarlandโLive in Paris, 1960 (Frรฉmeaux & Associรฉs, 2022). His translation from the French of Bertrand Tessierโs Judy Garland: Splendor and Downfall of a Legend, for which he also provided a Foreword, was published by BearManor Media in early 2023 and his own two-volume book, GarlandโThatโs Beyond EntertainmentโReflections on Judy Garland, with a Foreword by former ARSC Journal sound recordings editor, lawyer and audio engineer John H. Haley and an Afterword by longtime ARSC Journal reviewer, professor and author James Fisher, was published by BearManor Media later in 2023. FREE was published by BearManor in 2024, and his forthcoming book entitled Peter Allen: Somebody's Angel - The Boy From Oz In The Key of Camp will be published by BearManor in early 2025.

A Service of Healing and Hope For Anyone Who is Hurting During the Holiday Season
Church of Our Father, Route 3, Hulls Cove, 207-288-4849

A Longest Night Service (also called a Blue Christmas Service) is a quiet, contemplative service that happens near the winter solstice, the longest night and the shortest day of the year. Many find the holiday season hard, seeing others around us who are happy and celebrating while we are grieving, lonely, or longing for something better. This service, through silence, music, words, prayers, and lighting of candles, gives us space to acknowledge our emotions. Many have found this simple service helpful and supportive in their emotional and spiritual journey.

ASC Racial Justice Book Group
Are you interested in joining us? We are open to new members who want to share in the reading and the hard work that ensues as we examine the underpinnings of systemic racism and its effects on society and on each of us individually, in the ultimate hope thatย our studies can work toward change.
We have been meeting once a month on the secondย Tuesday of the month from 10:30- 12:15.
We started with the basic readings ofย How to Be an Antiracistย by Ibram X. Kendi andย The Sum of Usย by Heather McGhee.ย We then spent many months delving deeply intoย The 1619 Projectย edited by Nikole Hannah-Jones.
Since then, weโve read some James Baldwin, Colon Whitehead, Zora Neale Hurston, Eddie S. Glaude, Jr., Clint Smith and many others. We look forward in the next few months to reading some James McBride and Bryan Stevenson.ย We also share articles of interest that deal with the issues weโre facing.
If the truly hard, but most meaningful, work we are doing to examine our society, culture and ourselves sounds like something that interests you, please contact me atย rjbg2021@gmail.comย or 207-664-9954.

A NOTE FROM US
This is Carrie and Shaun, and as youโve probably noticed, weโve been working hard at the Bar Harbor Story, providing local news in a way that keeps you informed, but also embraces and promotes community and the good that is within it.
We take so much timeโjust the two of us, with a special needs kid that has to be homeschooledโto cover our island communityโs (plus, Trenton) local news in a way thatโs timely, daily, and remembers that underneath the news . . . there are people who are our neighbors.
We are working hard to get the news out thereโfor freeโfor everyone. But itโs taking its toll on our family financially and honestly, sometimes, emotionally, because frontline local news in a small community? Itโs hard.
Most media isnโt local (even when it claims it is). Most media has paywalls and advertisers. We donโt. Thatโs not a smart financial decision for us. Itโs a moral one. And weโre going to try to do it for as long as we can because weโre local, weโre passionate, and weโre all about getting the news to everyoneโno paywalls.
Richard Stengel, writing in The Atlantic, said, "Paywalls create a two-tiered system: credible, fact-based information for people who are willing to pay for it, and murkier, less-reliable information for everyone else. Simply put, paywalls get in the way of informing the public, which is the mission of journalism.โ
As a paper that is owned and staffed by locals, we make every attempt to gather all of the facts for our readers, information that might not be part of the main story and/or information that may not be known even to our townsโ officials, but is still just as important, if not more important, to the story.
We currently have over 3,000 subscribers, the vast majority of them free, with over 230,000 article reads every month. Each of our stories is opened at least 2,000 times. Most are opened well over that amount.
To continue to provide you with fact based, non-editorialized news, we really need your support! If youโd like to support us or subscribe? It would mean the world to us, and to the Bar Harbor Story!
There are a few ways to do that:
You can send us a one-time support via this link here. It will say โCarrie Jones Booksโ because thatโs what our PayPal account is through.
You can become a paid subscriber at either site here (scroll to bottom) or here (scroll to bottom).
Your business or nonprofit can sponsor the Bar Harbor Story with a banner ad. More information on that is here.
THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR COMMITMENT TO ALL OF OUR COMMUNITY
